Summary
Buck doesn’t have an emergency contact. Maddie's not here, and his parents have never cared. Connor? No go. Abby? He's known her a few weeks, so no.
Buck supposes that putting a random number wasn't a good idea. He had initially considered putting Bobby down but he didn’t want to be a nuisance. They’ve gotten closer, sure, Bobby calls him kid, Buck called him pops once, they went to a Springsteen concert together but Bobby’s his boss. So what did he do?
He just opened the Los Angeles phonebook he found at a phonebooth, opened it at a random page, put his finger at a random line, and put those random numbers down.
Enter: Eddie Diaz, Emergency Contact Extraordinaire

Summary
“Alright,” Eddie hums. “You can ask me twenty questions.”
“Only twenty questions?” Buck asks, exasperated. “Dude we have to ask each other questions all the time, I’m gonna run out like an hour into our next shift - wait, do I have to ask them all now?”
“Twenty personal questions that I promise to answer honestly, as long as you answer the same question - or a contextually similar one - honestly as well. And I reserve the right to decline to answer any two questions until a later date,” Eddie corrects, adding a frankly obscene amount of sugar to his coffee.or
The one where a game of 20 Questions shapes Buck and Eddie’s lives together.

Summary
You're really - hot and nice and. I don't know. I don't see how more people aren't nervous around you." Eddie's shoulders lifted in a small shrug. "That's actually two of the points on my list."
"Hot and nice?"
"There are only four points so far. The other two are you're funny and you have a nice laugh." Eddie paused. "Five, actually. You're also good with kids."
Buck chuckled as he took a drink of his beer. "All good points. Sounds like I'm a catch."
"Oh, so I can add modest to the list, too." Eddie rolled his eyes playfully while Buck laughed harder. Eddie smiled, wanting to hear that laugh again, and again, and again. Hopefully Buck would let him.
Or: Eddie hangs out with Chris's teacher. Totally platonically, of course.

Summary
“I can’t order you guys to go inside that building, and I’m not going to judge you if you decide not to.” Bobby says, looking at Hen.
“Hen, you got a kid, so…” Chimney says, shifting from one foot to another.
I have a kid, Eddie thinks. Does that mean he shouldn't go in that building?
“I do. And I’d hope if someone whose job it was to save him had the chance, they’d do it. No matter what.” Hen says firmly.
Eddie glances at Buck, who was already looking at him. It was like Buck heard Eddie’s internal struggle. Buck gave Eddie a slight nod. But it was enough to convey what Buck was trying to say.
‘I’ve got your back’
‘I won’t judge you’
‘We can do this’
It’s enough for Eddie. A lifeline for him to hold on to, that he can use to get through the day.
Or: Buck and Eddie were falling into step with each other. Their partnership was easy. When the biggest earthquake in SoCal in 20 years hits, they continue to have each other's backs as they find themselves learning new things about each other and themselves.

Summary
The cafeteria was silent. Other than a nurse sitting at a table in the corner, Buck and Eddie were the only ones there.
The cafeteria was already closed this late, but there was a coffee maker. Bobby had told them they could hang around while Charlie was in surgery. Everyone else had gone back to the station.
Eddie watched as Buck nursed his coffee, hunched over in the booth they sat in. After their risky plan paid off, Eddie had to admit he saw a new side to Buck that he liked. He wasn’t lying when he said he would trust Buck to have his back.
“I’m glad we managed to break that ice,” Eddie spoke up, “Even if it did take a grenade.”
Eddie can see a small smile on Buck’s face for a moment, before it falls away.
“Yeah. About that…” Buck says, sitting up straighter.
Or: Buck and Eddie work their first shift together. After they successfully pull a grenade out of a man's leg, they have a conversation that leads to a better understanding, and a new partnership.

Summary
"Buck couldn’t help but stare at Eddie and Christopher with a little bit of envy. At first, it felt like gazing at the stars, warm, peaceful, and breathtakingly beautiful. Then, a pang of jealousy struck him through the heart, so sudden that the smile dropped from his face in seconds. He missed Abby, missed getting to hold her, missed having somebody to be with after a hard shift. Buck isn’t completely sure when he started getting used to that feeling, but somewhere along the way, he got dependent on it. And, Buck hates himself for it."

That was not Shannon's voice.
That was a deep, handsome voice.
Could a voice be handsome?
Buck looked up and was immediately struck by the most gorgeous man he had ever laid eyes on. It almost felt like slow motion, the way he walked into the room with a nervous grin on his face. His tight LAFD shirt hugged his shoulders as he made his way over to Chris.
Chris, who was smiling up at him. "Dad!"
Ah. The elusive Mr. Diaz.
Shannon did not say her ex-husband was this hot. He almost felt a little betrayed.

Eddie rolled his eyes. “So because one woman left you, you’ve decided you’re better off alone forever.”
Buck pouted. “I’m not being that dramatic.”
“Yes, you are.”
“It’s just a lot, okay?” Buck gestured frustratedly. "I don’t want the shallow hookups I had before, and I know a real relationship can take time. I just — I — I don’t know if I’m ready for all of that.”
“So it’s the peacocking that you hate.”
“Something like that.”
There was a pause as Eddie seemed to hesitate for a second. Then, “Go on a date with me, then.”

"Come on, mijo. You've done this before."
Buck opened his eyes slightly to see a man with a young boy in his arms, struggling to make his way down the aisle. He had the boy clinging to his neck, crutches under his arm, a duffel bag in hand, and a small Superman backpack hanging off his back.
Buck immediately stood to help him, taking the duffel bag. The man smiled gratefully and -
He's really handsome.
Buck stared at him for a moment longer, fixated on his big brown eyes. He blinked, realizing the man was talking. He gave him an apologetic grin. "I'm so sorry. What?"
The man chuckled. Even his laugh was handsome. Could a laugh be handsome? If it could, this man's definitely was.

Maddie sends him a quick glare. "You know I love you, Buck, but please also know I think you're a huge idiot."
"He did the elevator thing again, didn't he?" May says instead of a greeting, when they enter the break room.
"No, traffic was just-" Buck tries, but his sister interrupts him with the reminder that she could see the floor numbers on the display above the call-elevator button.
Buck groans and drops down on a seat by the table. "He keeps pressing the button without asking, because he's being nice. What am I supposed to do?!"
OR, While Buck is recovering from a work injury, he temporarily works at the Call Center. Every morning he rides up the elevator, the hot guy from floor 6 presses his button for him, unknowing that it’s the wrong one (it's not his fault Buck stuttered because of the pretty face when asked what floor, okay?), and it would he weird for Buck to correct him after so long, especially when he fears the hot stranger must have something against him, because of their lack of talking every morning.
But then they suddenly get trapped in the elevator together, and their no-talking streak is finally broken. -

Summary
Eddie could honestly use a break.
Picture this. You come from war —from another realm, no less!— changed, somehow less you, less human, but still you, it’s your reflection in the mirror, it’s your son recognizing your features and calling you ‘daddy’. Of course it’s you, who else? A week passes, you are back home, trying to get used to normalcy, you haven’t even tried to think of what’s your next career path, because you sure as hell aren’t getting involved in another holy war for a deity you don’t even care about anymore, your oaths broken, forgotten, and buried under the roots of a tree of brilliant silver glow.
Eddie runs away with his son looking for nothing and, instead, finds a family —and, just perhaps, something more. Maybe they can help him figure out what is going on with himself. Maybe he didn't lose everything.
