    Summary

The whole world was nothing but darkness and pain but, somehow, he knew of these things from beyond it.

“Mydeimos,” the thin one said again.

    Mydeimos. That high, firm voice.

    Mydei. That low, soft voice.

These five knew something. Knew him or those voices.

So he gave them those two words burrowed somewhere deeper than his mind or body. Aedes Elysiae.

When Mydei finally emerges from the Sea of Souls after nine harsh winters, the most precious thing in the world to him isn’t his name, his body or his life. But two words he can’t remember the origin of: Aedes Elysiae.

As the years pass in exile, he finds himself plagued by knowledge that comes from the same maybe-past or maybe-future that wasn’t quite Mydei’s and yet was.

It took four years for him to stumble across Aedes Elysiae, a boy that calls the place home, and why those words were engraved upon his soul.

    Summary

Mydei was submerged up to the chest yet his tail burned. Scalded with the heat of the underwater forges that had moulded and tempered the weapon that didn’t creak in his hands even as he grabbed with all his strength to keep himself grounded because—

Because it was scales molting from flesh. Bones snapping and rending. Muscles and skin stretching and growing to accommodate.

He dunked below the water and silenced his scream, bubbling to the surface as nothing but empty air. His gills worked as the pain seared up through his hips into his torso: stomach spasming with the urge to wretch, lungs scorching like they were taking on blood instead of air, heart quivering as his most vital organs panicked over the sensation of his body being torn apart from the inside out. Smashed and jumbled back together.

It was an ordinary patrol and return to Styxia. Mydei only needed to report the same fact he had been relaying for years: no changes in the coastline of Aedes Elysiae.

Except he returns to find the village consumed by flames and the black tide. If Mydei wants to help then he has to step onto dry land, which means splitting his tail for the very first time.

    Summary

“What do you say? Descend to the mortal realm with me, Mydei.”

For a moment Mydei remained silent, still down to the moonlight emitting from his body, too restrained to be thoughtless.

Until Mydei grumbled in a voice rough with as many emotions as he had facets, closer to a mortal than a minor deity, “The black tide will still reach us there.”

Phainon squeezed Mydei tighter, no longer a tease, goading a reaction any number of reactions from him to make up for lost time, but filled with something more. Another emotion more fitting for mortals than gods, weighing his voice and dragging it low. “Better one day than now. And we’ll be together until it does.”

As Amphoreus’ sun and moons, Phainon and Mydei have spent thousands of years keeping the order of day and night balanced. With the black tide and the arrival of the evernight fast approaching, humanity will inevitably lose its celestial bodies.

If it’s the fate of the sky to be empty, then there’s no harm in the sun and moons choosing elopement over destruction.

    Summary

Mydei dropped his chin to his chest with a quiet breath of a laugh. “Phainon, being with you makes me happy. Before I met you, I thought such a thing as happiness was no longer mine to claim.”

He huffed another laugh and it was more hollow than the last. Warm but just slightly off. He shook his head, blue and gold gleaming off his ear in the eternal day that cast their long shadows across the earth far below them. With their backs to the city, it was as though they were at the top of the world. Finally, after such a long journey. But if they slipped then they would tumble to the bottom and shatter into unsalvageable pieces.

“The closest I ever came before to such joy was when those five were at my side.”

“Did you ever honestly mourn for them?”

No matter how Phainon searches Okhema, high and low, morning to evening, Mydei is nowhere to be seen. Until Phainon finds Mydei atop the city walls reliving some old memories that ache anew. Sometimes happiness is hard to swallow.

    Summary

    “Mydei. Mydei, it’s me. Phainon!”

At that, Mydei’s lip curled from its frown into the slightest, lazy smile and hope sparked in Phainon’s chest. Of course Mydei would recognise him even like this. So long as Mydei knew the truth, he could contact Cipher or Anaxa and surely their individual specialisations would be able to—

“You are a noisy one, aren’t you?” Mydei teased.

Ah. That was a bit of an issue. Mydei didn’t recognise him after all. That was fine. A minor setback really. Phainon had overcome worse odds before. He could do it again! Even in the body of a chimera.

Through a bit of Zagreus’ trickery attached to a mirror, Phainon takes on the appearance of a chimera and spends the day with Mydei. Despite how humiliating it is, Phainon is relieved that no one can understand him and figure out his true identity while he waits to return to normal.

After all, only people who receive a blessing of Cerces can understand chimera speech. And no one else. Right?

    Summary

“Have you considered appealing the verdict?”

Mydei scoffed at the naivety and pushed off the wall. “I’ll handle it.”

This time, Phainon very deliberately ignored the cue of his dismissal and followed. “How?”

    “None of your concern.”

Eight months into the Kremnoan detachment’s assimilation into the city and the case of Okhemans thieving weapons from the Kremnoan detachment’s armoury seems unsolvable. The city’s laws, regulations and the sentiments of its citizens make it so.

It falls to Mydei to prevent the relationship between the two from spiralling into riots through the streets. But every avenue is a dead end. A situation that becomes more impossible the more he tries to resolve it.

The solution comes in an unexpected form, and from an unexpected source.

    Summary

Mydei can feel the glorifying way the Deliverer roams his hands around his body, as if he’s a fragile and valuable object that could break at any time. Him, without his clothes, his armor, bare of the walls that he so tirelessly built up from a young age, only for a particular Deliverer to come barging into his life and effortlessly unravel his entire person and worship all his bits and pieces.

    Or

Clingy!Phainon goes into rut in a most inopportune moment and Mydei has to deal with the succeeding consequences. That and a whole lot of feelings.

    Summary

Phainon liked to claim that exposure to Mydei’s… hot body—words Mydei had turned and abandoned Phainon in the streets for—would force him to build tolerance but the proof otherwise was right in front of him. He would cling to Mydei and beg for cuddles and cheer when Mydei opened his arms, forgetting that he had once passed out from their combined body heat.

Basic self-preservation was less important than Phainon burying his face in Mydei’s chest, so he didn’t let a small thing like heat intolerance stop him.

Phainon never knew what was good for him. That’s why he held Mydei so close despite how it burned him. Wantonly, desperately, whole-heartedly.

And, one day, Mydei would take all that love Phainon had given him and turn it to heartache.

For someone as clingy as Phainon, of course cuddling would become his favourite new form of affection. Every night Mydei found himself curled around Phainon.

But in the privacy of the night, when Phainon inevitably fell asleep first, Mydei could admire him all he wished and contemplate the two different futures they saw for themselves.
