Summary

“No ‘s not,” Andrew weakly argued as he took hold of Neil’s chest pad, using it to leverage himself upwards. It was awkward work of walking half-delirious Andrew back to the locker room, shielding him from the crowd while keeping him on his feet, but they managed.

“Aaron is mad. You’re mad. Were you going to hit him?” Andrew said, interrupting his thoughts.“If he threw another ice cube at me, I would have hit him.” He meant it, too. He was now limited on clothes and didn't need Aaron’s attitude to ruin the only set he had.
“Hmm.” Andrew hummed.
Neil stared at Andrew’s stiff posture. There was a lot of angry staring going around, it seemed. [lol] “Don’t do that.”
“Do what?”
Irritated, Neil said, “Pretend like Aaron is defenseless. If I had hit him, he would have hit back. If he hit me first, I would have hit him back. Aaron doesn’t need a protector.”
Andrew said, “Okay.”
Neil paused, dumbfounded. “That's it? Okay?”
“Aaron stopped needing someone to protect him years ago.”
“Okay.”
“Neil.” Andrew stopped him before he made it to his blanket relocation site.
“What,” he said with an irritated edge, “what?” he repeated louder, pulling his stuff back to the floor.
Andrew stared—more staring—deeply into Neil’s eyes like he was figuring something out. “Nothing.”

They drove in silence for three hours and two more of radio music, creating a comfortable atmosphere until Andrew pulled into a gas station for a bathroom break and to fill up the tank. Neil hopped out, too, with the duffle bag in tow. Andrew raised his brow at him, to which Neil shrugged off. It was funny how old habits never died.ch6:
