The strange thing about Theo, Potter, was that he never saw himself the way I did. Thought he was ruined, broken, bad. But to me he was gold, always. Even when he cheated, even when he lied. Maybe especially then.

Or: The before, the during, and the aftermath of The Goldfinch, as told by Boris.

“What superpower would you wish for?”

“Right now? Super strength,” Eli grumbled, pulling against the restraints holding his arms behind his back. He was bitter that he was chained up while Victor was free, not that either of them was actually free at the moment. “Or maybe quick regeneration. That way, when I get hurt, I could heal instantly.”

“Or you could stop getting hurt so much,” Victor teasingly suggested. He dropped back onto dusty stone ground beside Eli, letting out a deep sigh. They both looked up at the dingy walls surrounding them, only broken up by a short door of metal bars.

“Where do you think we are?” Eli asked.

“Why do you think I know?”

“Because you pretend that you know everything.”

Dara always knew more than the adults around him thought he should. Knew more than them, period. It was something that Lehrer found charming about him, at least at first.

    Summary

There are whispers about Edmund Pevensie in the hallways: about how volatile he is, about his fierce loyalty to his siblings, about his disinterest in most things that don’t involve subtle politics or swordfighting. His teachers think he’ll make an excellent diplomat; his siblings know he already has. The Pevensies do not suddenly become children again, after Narnia, least of all Edmund. When they return to the ancient lands, they are something far older than the ghosts whose shoes they fill.

Or rather, try to fill. They’re smaller now, after all. It doesn’t matter. They’ll grow again.
