The True Masters of Death

Summary:

Voldemort messes with the Triwizard Tournament and Harry's name is called forcing him to participate, what will happen when the Potters show the world that it is them, the descendents of Pervel, to be the Masters of Death, not the self proclaimed Lord Voldemort.

Chapter 1: Chapter 1

Chapter Text

Harry Potter was at the opening feast for his fourth year. After the new first year's had been sorted, Dumbledore stood up.

"Welcome,” he said, his voice warm and carrying easily over the sound of the rain. “To another year at Hogwarts! Before we begin our feast, I have several announcements to make.”

Dumbledore’s blue eyes twinkled as he surveyed the hall. “First, I am delighted to introduce our new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Professor Moody.”

The Hall erupted into whispers as a grizzled, battle-scarred man stood and gave a curt nod. His magical eye swiveled independently, scanning the room while it searched for any dangers. Harry had never seen anyone quite like him.

“Mad-Eye Moody,” Ron whispered to Harry, his voice tinged with awe. “Dad’s talked about him. He’s a legend—took down loads of dark wizards in his day.”

Dumbledore raised a hand for silence. “And now, the moment you’ve all been waiting for. This year, Hogwarts has the honor of hosting a very special event—the Triwizard Tournament!”

Gasps and excited murmurs filled the hall. Dumbledore smiled as he continued, “For those who do not know, the Triwizard Tournament is a competition between three wizarding schools: Hogwarts, Beauxbatons, and Durmstrang. Each school will select a champion to compete in a series of magical tasks, designed to test courage, skill, and intellect.”

Harry felt his heart race as he exchanged an excited glance with Hermione.

“However,” Dumbledore added, his tone serious, “the tournament is not without its risks. As such, only students who have comeof age will be permitted to enter. This is for your safety and will be strictly enforced.”

At the Gryffindor table, Fred and George exchanged looks of disbelief.

“What? That’s rubbish!” Fred hissed.

“Seventeen? That’s ages away!” George muttered. Seventeen was when one would normally come of age, assuming that they had not been emancipated already.

The twinkle in Dumbledore's eyes seemed to grow brighter. “I will explain the selection process once the other schools have arrived.

Now, let us enjoy our feast!”

As he said that the golden plates filled with a variety of foods, the chatter at the Gryffindor table, and all the other tables turned to the tournament.

Chapter 2: Chapter 2

Chapter Text

Between the opening feast and the arrival of the other competing schools, life went on as normal.

Potions class with Snape was still horrid, instructions are on the board follow them, and getting points taken for little things like breathing too loudly, or asking questions, while the house of Slytherin was blatantly favoured was still the norm.

In Divination Harry's death was still predicted multiple times each week, though he was not there to hear it, as he had had received permission to change it out for Runes and Arithmancy, and with the help of Hermione over the summer, he had learned enough so that he could be with the year 4 class, rather than joining with the year 3 class.

Transfigeration, Charms, and Astronomy did not have much change either, just more difficult lessons, while most just slept through History of magic, or read the required readings, which covered everything anyway.

The biggest change in lessons was in Defence Against Dark Arts, or DADA. The course focused more on actually doing defence and was very enjoyable. Though there were a few lessons that caused concern for the students, like the First one.

The Year 4 class that Harry was part of entered the DADA classroom, and something put Harry on the alert. He didn't know what, but something was off. A spell came flying out from the corner of the room, and thanks to his alertness both both Harry and Hermione managed to dodge, other classmate were not so lucky.

Moody dispelled the enchantment on himself that hid him from others sight, and shouted, "CONSTANT VIGILANCE!" A mantra he would repeat many times a lesson, and even sometimes outside of lessons. The former Aura then proceeded to award points to Harry and Hermione, then berate the class for not noticing something was wrong.

The other Class, or rather classes that left the students unsettled was classes on the Unforgivables.

They were all seated at their tables already when Professor Moody asked for the name of one of the Unforgivables, the first to answer said Imperius, the mind control Unforgivable, for which the incantation was Imperio.

Professor Moody started by making the spider dance, than had it fling itself at Ron, who instantly started hyperventilating to the point of almost blacking out before the spider eas commanded to get off of him. The spiders antics had most of the class laughing.

"You think that this is funny," growled Moody, "I can tell it to do anyway, and it must obey, even going to it's death say by drowning, or cutting off it's limbs, and for a magical being, they retain full memory of what they did under the spell."

They quickly sobered up after that.

The next spell called was Cruciatus, the torture curse, with the spell crucial you can cause unbearable pain. When Moody changed to this curse, the spider fell on the table top writhing in pain. This time it was Nevil who almost had a mental breakdown. Harry sitting between Hermione and Nevil tried to comfort him, learning later that day from Nevil when he thanked him for helping in DADA that Nevil's parents were driven to insanity due to prolonged exposure to the curse.

The last of the three Unforgivables was the Killing curse, with the words Avada Kedavra a green light shot from Professor Moody's wand, when it hit the spider it fell lifeless without a trace of damage. The green curse spread fear throughout the class. While this was all bad, it was what was still to come that most disliked.

After theory came practical, and for the lesson on Unforgivables, and with express permissions from the ministry, all students were subject to the Imperius curse, the first was Lavender Brown, who performed a tap dance on the table, as Moody went through the students there was various levels of resistance with Susan Bones and Hermione as the most resistant to the curse, but in the end they too, like everyone before them ended up doing something embarrassing. There were a few students left, of them Mody was most disappointed in Ron Weasley, as with no resistance to the curse he started performing an intricate ballet dance, the amount of force Moody used to command him was almost nonexistent. Harry Potter was something else entirely, his mental abilities were top notch, though he often kept back in class to appease Ron, a habbit drilled into him by the Dursleys, one he was starting to break, but thanks to the Horux, which due to its invasive nature, he had unconsciously strengthened his mental defence to the point that he could resist easily.

The voice said, "Jump."

To which the reply was "Why?"

The command was repeated again, and once again Harry responded with a question. This went on for some time, the struggle was starting to show on Moody, then Moody repeated the command one last time, "Jump!" Then the strangest thing happened.

Harry changed what his reply was, instead of "Why?" it was "No!" followed by "You jump." And with that Moody started jumping. Harry had done something rarely heard of, and done it completely by accident, he took control of the magic path that linked him to the caster, and reversed the spell, commanding Moody as the caster to jump, and due to his mental capabilities being already worn out by Harry, without much resistance he succumbed to the spell. For the next week this was the talk of the school.

Each week they kept repeating this exercise, and they would until at least half could resist a moderate attack. Hermione soon could resist, not long after came Susan, which was unsurprising as her aunt and guardian was head if the DMLE so she had had a fair bit of preparation, after her came the heirs of other great houses for very similar reasons.

Chapter 3: Chapter 3

Chapter Text

A week before Halloween

The students from Beauxbatons and Durmstrang were due to arrive, so when a shout was heard saying that they were here, everyone flocked to the windows to catch a glimpse of them.

The Beauxbatons arrived in a flying carriage drawn by a dozen Abraxans, essentially winged magical horses, while the students of Durmstrang docked their boat at a harbour in the Black Lake.

Later that day the Goblet of Fire was lit, and every one gathered in the great hall for the welcome feast.

Dumbledore then rose and addressed the gathered assembly,

"This is the Goblet of Fire, lighting it signifies the start of the Triwizard Tournament. Those who are interested in participating, must write their names on a piece of paper and throw it into the fire. At this time on Halloween night, the goblet will return the names of the students that it has selected. One for each school."

The students in the hall stared at the goblet. An aura of excitement mixed with trepidation covering them.

"But please understand. Yes, there is glory in competing and greater glory in victory. But once you have submitted your name to the flames," Dumbledore paused, allowing the scattered murmurs to cease, before continuing.

"There is no turning back. The Goblet of Fire constitutes a binding magical contract. Submitting your name is the equivalent of signing said contract. If your name is put in… and the goblet returns your name..."

"You must compete," he said with finality.

"Refusal to do so can have devastating consequences. So please consider carefully before submitting your names. As I have mentioned at the opening feast earlier this year, the tournament is not for the faint of heart. Many have died before, and even with all the precautions in place. We cannot guarantee that there will be no serious injuries or deaths this time around. Of course, I pray that it would not be so. But the risk is there, so heed my warning."

Some students in the audience who initially appeared excited, now looked nervous. The blue light from the goblet's fire cast an ominous glow. Harry had no desire to take part even if he were old enough, but he couldn't help but feel a sense of dread wash over him, foreshadowing some great disaster, after all the choosing of the champions was taking place on the Halloween feast, and each year without fail, something terrible had happened on that day, and he was caught up in the center of it all.

"In order to prevent any underage entries, an age line will be drawn. There will be obvious and I daresay, amusing consequences to any who try to get around it."

"You will have the whole of week, up until dinner time on Halloween to enter. I think that is all- Oh wait, to our guests, please refrain from exploring the forbidden forest. Though they generally do not stray too close to the forests edge. There are many a danger that lies hidden in those trees, many with teeth... Rather large teeth…"

The foreign students shifted in their seats, looking quite perturbed at Professor Dumbledore's warning. Harry agreed with him though, thinking of Aragog and his far too large family.

"I believe we are all starved, so let us begin the feast," said the eccentric Headmaster, clapping his hands once.

The food that appeared on the tables had many of the usual feast items, but also included a variety of foods Harry had never seen before. He realised they must be there to accommodate the foreign students

Chapter 4: Chapter 4

Chapter Text

Mid way through the feast, a girl from Beauxbatons approached Harry asking if he and his group were finished with a specific dish, one that the other students had finished on her table before se could get any, and was quite surprised when he kept hold of all his mental capacities. Intrigued she asked to meet him later as she was interested to get to know him, and any of his friends whom he might bring.

Later that day Harry, Hermione, Ron, and Nevil met the girl from Beauxbatons. They learned that she was a veela, something that Hermione had already guessed by how all the boys but Harry were affected by her presence, and that her name was Fleur Delacour. Fleur was a lonely girl, and even though she was by far the most beautiful person in Beauxbatons, she had no friends out side of her family, as boys just wanted her body, and girls hated her because of this. It was because of this that she had for a long time wanted to make some friends, which is why she is glad, ecstatic even, that Harry is not affected by her alure. Ron and Nevil could not boast of the same mental fortitude as him though, meaning the conversation was mostly between Harry, Hermione, and Fleur.

The days went by and Fleur became good friends with Harry and Hermione. Soon the Halloween feast came, and with it the choosing of the three champions.

After everyone had finished eating, well everyone but Ron, Dumbledore stood up and addressed the students "Today I have the honour of presenting the Triwizard Champions, in just a moment the goblet will be lit, and the champions names will come out, the name coming out seals a magical oath meaning that you have to complete in each of the three tasks, otherwise you will lose your magic, staff members are not allowed to help outside of class."

With that he sat down and the goblet glowed with an ethereal blue flame, and out of it came a parchment, "For Durmstrang, the champion is... Victor Krum" Everyone cheered. Then another parchment came out, "For Beauxbatons the champion is... Fleur Delacour" Everyone cheered again, though the girls from Beauxbatons were not at all happy with the outcome. "And finally.." Dumbledore finished as the third parchment came out. "For Hogwarts... Cedric Diggory." The crowd roared to life again, though it quickly quietened for as the champions were leaving to be given some final information, the goblet sent out another parchment. "Harry Potter!" With those words things were set in motion that couldn't be undone, great change would come to the wizard's world.

Chapter 5: Chapter 5

Chapter Text

“HARRY POTTER!”

The Great Hall immediately turned silent and everyone, student and staff alike, turned towards the young black-haired boy, who turned paler every second. The expressions all over the room were diverse, like Severus Snape’s anger (at the upstart Potter brat), Minerva McGonagall’s broad smile, Pomona Sprout’s disappointment, the Slytherins’ anger towards Potter, the Hufflepuffs’ disgust with the damn boy-who-lived, the Ravenclaws’ confusion and curiosity, the delighted of Gryffindor’s students, Ronald Weasley’s anger and disappointment towards his “best mate” for not telling him how to put your name in the goblet, and various other combinations of those feelings all over staff and students. Albus Dumbledore wasn’t sure how to react, while Harry could die, it would be a great test, so he just looked at Harry, trying to discern what was going on in the boy's head.

And then there were the few people actually concerned. Fleur for her new friend, and Nevil, both of whom could see as plain as day that Harry did not do it, and did not want to be in the Tornament. The Quidditch team, who had become like older brothers and sisters to Harry and had never known him to lie or seek glory. Luna Lovegood also did not believe Harry put his name in, though the others reactions must be due to an epidemic of nargle infestations which clouded the majority of the people's judgement.

Lastly there was Hermione, she immediately knew Harry hadn’t done it. He wouldn’t. Fame? He hated it as it was a reminder of his parents. Money? He had that as well, he came from one of the oldest, and richest houses, a fact she had found in Hogwarts library the day before, and was going to ask Harry about, though unbeknownst to her, Harry knew nothing of this wealth. Hah, Harry had those things and was in mortal danger often enough. Besides, his reactions were obvious to her and Ron…or apparently not, as it seemed. Damn. Their massive fallout was to be expected if no one with authority would clear up this situation…and the professors really didn’t have the best track record in regards to that. Cough cough the heir of Slytherin fiasco cough cough. Up until this day barely anyone knew of the basilisk, Quirrell had “unforseen and unfortunate business to attend to” and so on. Now, the usually very rule-obedient Hermione Granger had enough. Everyone was acting freaking negligent and Harry would pay the price for that. So in an attempt to make a plan her eyes wandered across the whole hall while her hand ended up on Harry’s shoulder, squeezing it softly. She mouthed “I’m with you, always” as he turned back to her before getting up. A small smile creeped on his face, he nodded thankfully with a look of gratitude and adoration towards his fantastic friend. She knew he hadn’t done it, and it heartened him.

“Harry Potter! Please, come up here now.”

Knowing he had Hermione’s support, Harry found the strength to speak up.

“I…I didn’t do it, Headmaster.”

Dumbledore, about to ask if he did it, was actually inclined to believe that, but there was nothing he could do about it. He knew it would end with some confrontation between Harry and Voldemort, after all history repeats itself, and that was just what they’d need for the prophecy. Depending on how Tom wanted to return…the right ritual and some of Harry’s blood as a base element and the boy could even survive, it would be unfortunate if thar were not the case, but the prophesy would be fulfilled and Albus Dumbledore could then be the defeater of not one but two dark lords. An unfortunate outcome Yes, but the main objective was to stop Riddle. He’d have to see how this would play out.

“Come with me, Harry.”

And with that, Harry and the other champions were ushered into the antechamber.

Chapter 6: Chapter 6

Chapter Text

Once the champions, Harry, the headmasters, and the tornament officials, along with some of the staff entered the antechamber Dumbledore turned to Harry.

"Harry did you enter your name?"

"Of course the Potter brat put his name in, he is an attention seeker just like his father." Came the scornful voice Snape before Harry could get a word in.

"I was not asking you Severus, now Harry did you put your name in?"

"No I didn't."

"Did you ask anyone older to put your name in?"

"You mean that thar would have worked?" The surprise evident in his voice.

Turning to Ludo Bagman, Dumbledore asked, "Well it seems evident that he did not put his name in, does he still need to participate?"

This time it was Karkaroff that interrupted. "I refuse, this is just a ploy to allow Hogwarts more of a chance to win."

"I'm not sure, Barty you are an expert in the Triwizard rules, what would you say?"

"Wouldn't risk him not participating, the rule states that if your name comes out, and you don't participate, you will lose your Magic, maybe even your life."

"Well that settles it then, Harry will have to participate, unfortunately the same rules apply to him as they do to the others, none of the teachers may help him prepare for the Triwizard at risk of losing their magic."

"The first task will be on the 24th of November. Use this time to prepare. You are now dismissed."

As the champions exited the room, Fleur called Harry over and said, "I don't believe zat you put your name in." She was quickly dragged off by her headmistress.

Harry soon found himself in an empty great hall. He had hoped that Hermione and Ron, and maybe Nevil might have stayed, just Hermione would have been fine, but no one was there.

After taking just a few strides outside of the hall an invisible force crashed into him nocking him over.

Chapter 7: Chapter 7

Chapter Text

Surprised by the sudden force, Harry reached for his wand to protect himself, only to realise that the invisible object was crying.

The invisible thing was Hermione under his invisible cloak. As soon as she had taken the cloak off she firmly latched herself to Harry, burying her head in his neck refusing to let go as tears ran down her face and made his shoulder wet.

Harry took his hand off his wand and put his arms around her to comfort her. Slowly she started to calm down.

"No-nobody would believe me, that you didn't put your name in, well maybe Nevil and the Quidditch team did, but every one else, excluding Ron was throwing a party to celebrate your entrance into this despicable tournament."

"Thank you Hermione for being with me, you always have been and I thank you for that. Though I do have a question for you, it is one that I have wanted to ask for a while, but always chickened out, this tournament could kill me, so I might not have much time left, but I love you, if what this feeling I have when around you is love. Would you do me the honour of being my girlfriend?"

In answer to his question, Hermione hugged him even tighter, and leaned up and kissed him. When their lips met, they became obvious to all that was around them, including the golden glow that filled the room, the glow came from inside them.

"If its not clear, my answer is yes." Then she whispered in his ear, "I thought you'd never ask."

Suddenly the sound of flapping filled the hall.

Chapter 8: Chapter 8

Chapter Text

The flapping came from three birds.

Three owls to be specific, all carrying letters, and on both the owls and the letters there was proudly displayed the Gringotts crest.

They delivered their letters, two to Harry, and one to Hermione.

Harry's first letter read as follows

Harry Potter, heir of the house of Potter,

We at Gringotts have always had a good relationship with those of House Potter, our letters to you have never been received, due to a mail direction ward placed on you, we have slowly been increasing the counter to the ward so that we can just get past it without giving away our communication with you, but the topic we have to discuss is of utmost importance, so we have had to overpower the counter.

The reason for writing this letter is this, after going over the rules for the Triwizard Tournament, we have found some loopholes that we can exploit.

The first being that participants must be of age, so magic, the government, and Hogwarts all consider you of age. When you next come to Gringotts we can emancipate you.

The second is that each school can only have one representative, as Hogwarts already has one, you cannot be a representative, therefore we at Gringotts offer you to be a representative of Gringotts, we can give you training that will greatly improve your chances of survival, and we will not lose any magic even if we train you specifically for the tournament as we are not wizards.

Emancipation means that you will be your own master, and that you can take up the Lord ring of House Potter, becoming Lord Potter, this will give you protection against harmful potions, mind manipulating spells and potions and several other things.

To come to Gringotts, say Emancipation, and this page will portkey you to Gringotts, it will only work after you have finished reading this letter.

Tell no one but those you completely trust.

Yours sincerely

Ragnok

King of the Goblins.

To say this letter surprised Harry and Hermione would be an understatement.

"Well I think you should do this, I want you kept safe, but first, let's read the other two to see what else we should know.

Harry Potter, Lord of House Potter

We at Gringotts send our congratulations for your marriage via soulbond to Lady Hermione Potter née Granger.

A letter has been sent to her informing her of this fact, please come to Gringotts both of you at your earliest convenience to receive the Lord and Lady rings of House Potter.

Say marriage to be portkeyed to Gringotts.

Yours sincerely

Goldblade

Management of relations in Gringotts.

Hermione Potter née Granger, Lady of House Potter

We at Gringotts send our congratulations for your marriage via soulbond to Lord Harry Potter.

Due to the soulbond you have been emancipated.

A letter has been sent to him informing him of this fact, please come to Gringotts both of you at your earliest convenience to receive the Lord and Lady rings of House Potter.

Say marriage to be portkeyed to Gringotts.

Yours sincerely

Goldblade

Management of relations in Gringotts.

These other letters were no less surprising than the first.

Holding onto the first letter, with Hermione holding onto him, Harry said "Emancipation." Immediately they felt the pull of the portkey, and disappeared.

Chapter 9: Chapter 9

Chapter Text

When the portkey's journey ended, they found themselves in the entrance room at Gringotts. Having been already notified of their summons, the goblins quickly ushered them out and led them to Ragnok's office, thankfully it was near the end of the day, so no wizards were currently in Gringotts, meaning that no one saw them, and rumours of two Hogwart students arriving by portkey to Gringotts would not travel.

In Ragnok's office they were given seats, and asked to wait a little while.

A few minutes later Ragnok walked into the room.

"Mr Potter, it is good to see you at last. I have been waiting to see you since you could take up the heir ring at age 11, but it seems that there are people who want to control you. I am assuming that this young lady beside you is Mrs Potter"

"Greetings Your Majesty,"

"Call me Ragnok, you are one of our richest, and most polite customers, so it is only fair."

"In that case then, greetings Ragnok, just call us Harry and Hermione."

"Well then, the first order of today, or night as it is now, is to have you take an inheritance test. All you need to do is drop three drops of blood onto the page in front of you, one each, and Goblin magic will do the rest."

"Excuse me Ragnok, but why do I need to take an inheritance test, I'm a Muggleborn?"

"Good question Hermione, the answer is that we goblins do not believe that magic appears out of nowhere, in the muggle world there are people who practice science, and one of the branches, biology, says how traits are passed down generations sometimes disappearing for a few generations, so somewhere in your line there must have been a wizard, who most likely had a squib who is your ancestor."

Soon the pages had the required blood on them, and started to change, lines appeared as if drawn from the blood.

"Well let's see, who's do you want to read first?"

"Let's look at Harry's first."

The two potters were astounded, the money was beyond their understanding, and the list of properties made the headmaster's decision to have Harry live with the Dursleys quite concerning, well the money did as well, all this and he never knew about it.

It was the last section that really disturbed them, Loyalty and Love potions to those that they had trusted, and thought of as friends, and a revultion potion to try keep them apart, blocks on his magic, something really wasn't right here.

What really set Ragnok off was the Horux, putting blocks on was usual, though it should have been removed by now, but a Horux, that should never have been left, and there was no way thar Dumbledore did not know of the Horux.

Next was Hermione’s.

Again, the blocks and potions angered the three readers.

"Well with that out of the way, our plans will have to slightly change. First things first, you will need to take up your rings, they will give some protection against harmful potions and mind magics, I have sent for them already."

Soon there was a knock at the door.

"Come in Bladerunner."

In came a Goblin with a pile of boxes containing the rings. There wasn't much above efficiency that goblins valued more.

Harry put on the Lord rings for the houses of Potter, Peverell, Gryffindor, Slytherin, and the Heir ring for the house of Black, then he put on the marriage rings for both Potter and Peverell on Hermione, making her Lady Peverell as well. She then put on the rings for Dagworth-Granger, and Ravenclaw.

"We should probably send you to our healers for a check up, and to purge you of those potions, remove the blocks and extract the Horux. Then we will have a chat about this tournament. After that I will take you to your Vaults, there is something that you really should have been told about in your Potter vault, but more on that later.
