Summary
Tim was really, really sick. He was consuming six to seven meals a day but staying eternally hungry. He drank liters of water and was still thirsty. He’d lost nearly ten pounds in a month despite the massive food intake and he was constantly exhausted, despite the fact that he’d been getting better at sleeping for more than six hours a day.
Not even three google searches at the beginning of April, and Tim was ninety percent sure he had type one diabetes. It was July, he still hadn't told a soul, and he was dying. Whoops.

Joel would look up at Marlene incredulously if he weren’t so busy pinning the writhing monster to the wall with the aim of his gun. And— well, if it weren’t for the adrenaline flooding his system, he’d stop and realize that the threat of a gun has never stopped an Infected before.

“We’ll pay him, don’t worry,” Marlene dismisses, and Ellie shakes her head.
“No,” Ellie replies, trying to make her understand. Her hands tremble in her lap and she pulls them into fists. “We didn’t think I’d have to die for the cure. He won’t let this happen if he finds out. You have to start the surgery now, or he’ll kill you."
Or: Ellie gets a choice— she chooses the cure. Joel still murders them all.

When she’s about three days from her sixteenth birthday, she digs into the bathroom cabinet in a manic episode of terror and self-hatred that ends abruptly with chemicals burning into her arm and Joel bellowing for Tommy in a panic as the powder eats through her skin. After the Incident, as the adults call it, Ellie is marched down to therapy thrice a week. All day Joel hovers, and at night he sits against the wall outside her room as if she’s going to call out to to him for help or maybe bash her head into a wall. Like she has the fucking energy for that.
Joel’s afraid Ellie’s going to kill herself, and she can’t tell him for sure that she won’t.
