Summary
The three of them weren’t the kind that babysat children or went on mountain hikes on the week-ends and took candid pictures of birds or flowers—maybe Phainon was, once upon a time, before they’d gotten him tangled in their mess, but things had changed.
A dead mother and a father with a penchant for locking his children in the dark, where he couldn’t see her face through theirs, and an easily flammable wooden house near, but not close enough to a lake, had breathed through the three of them some social awkwardness, a lot of emotional dependency, and a certain proclivity toward fire. So one carried the lighter. One cleaned up. And one, who still clung onto his sanity like a lifebelt, lived as an alibi for the other two, the straight horizontal lines linking them on the family tree a bridge none of them could ever burn.
Or: Phainon's love life seems to be getting back on track. He's happily almost-dating Mydeimos, a neighboring daycare teacher, and all would be for the best... If only his twin brother, the infamous arsonist the whole city called the Flame Reaver, didn't have a knack for turning to ashes everything Phainon held dear.
