Summary
goodbyes have always been awkward for sylnan. so when the fated start to split up- seeking different quests and following their callings all over the nine realms- he keeps alot of his opinions to himself. the trouble is velrisa. the trouble is velrisa, and the easy silence the two of them have. the trouble is velrisa, and the natural rhythm they have together in combat. the trouble is velrisa, who he can't quite get a read on. who- unbeknownst to him- is just as scared of their goodbye as he is.
velrisa's first problem is that she might be in love with sylnan vengolor; which seems likely to be problematic.
her second is that sylnan vengolor has skyrocketed her libidio to constant and un-ignorable levels, which seems definitively problematic.it takes them over six months to discuss this.

Summary
Sylnan’s going to be eight next tuesday, and he’s never mastered his letters the way his little brother has. The tidy symbols that march so neatly from Br’aad’s pencil twirl around and float off the page for him. Instead, he uses burnt sticks and chalk and coal nubs and sometimes real graphite pencils, and he makes pictures, instead.
He can find those supplies elsewhere; somewhere with kinder walls and nicer roommates. Bigger meals, warmer beds, fewer bruises. So he leaves his pictures behind; and he climbs into the night with his brother at his heels.
It takes twelve minutes for his vacant bedroom to be filled, and another four years for the next pair of wayward children to make their escape. Taxi and Velrisa suffer the orphanage, and grow in spite of it, till the only space left to grow is outside of their tiny room’s cracking walls. They use Sylnan’s pictures and Br’aad’s words, and fight their way out. The problem, though; is that then, the newest vagabonds in the wharf come to find the Vengolors.

Summary
In the beginning, Brendan Vengolor wasn't named Brendan. Miriam wasn't a Vengolor. Maybe, in one of the many universes of the Fated, there's a universe where they and their sons got to be happy- escaped Rigmund's grip before the Wharf became the slum we see it as. Maybe in some universe, there's a ship to someplace warmer, calmer, where magic doesn't have to hurt and hunger isn't deadly. Maybe in some universe, they make it to that boat.
A very big thank you to my buddy Parallasso for proofreading- in the face of finals season, no less! And the credit for my inspo goes in full to Violaextract, who first drew Miriam's family and was mentally ill with me about the process of this whole thing. Check them out on tumblr!

Summary
The barber in Shaygrove is a good barber- but no hairdresser. He makes a hackjob of Velrisa's haircut, leaves her with a head of short, uneven waves that make her look boyish. Velrisa likes it.
Sylnan says it makes her look like him, when he was little. Br’aad says he likes it on the principle that it makes his own hair look longer. Taxi just looks at her a bit funnily, as though he knows something she doesn’t, and says nothing. Mountain tousles her hair and calls her Soldat, a nickname in Giant, and likens her to the jack figure from playing cards. Ander, when he sees her again, laughs and cups her face and says she looks just like she did when she was little. He gets the translation, the joke, from Mountain- and begins to call her Soldat, as though Soldat is her title instead of priestess.
Velrisa likes that, too.
shoutout to octolingo who (by mistake) reminded me of the haircuts mountain and vel got in shaygrove, and ttrpgenjoyer on tumblr, who posted velrisa with short hair and reminded me of a trans vel fic idea i had ages ago.

Summary
It takes nine days to disappear. It takes four years, however, for Velrisa to realize she now feels and thinks no more than the average wraith she kills. It takes her a month to return to her childhood home, and then nearly a year to fall in love with being alive again. She spends most of that year unsuccessfully trying to fall out of love with Sylnan Vengolor- now her coworker in the Afterforge Combat Academy, her alma mater.
It takes Sylnan six months after she disappears to finish searching the world for her, and he stumbles into Ander’s office on Afterforge, begging for news of her. It takes ten minutes to learn she’s alive. It takes less than an instant to be relieved, and then it takes three years for him to stop hating her for leaving him behind. It takes nearly a year for him to admit he never hated her to begin with.
Featuring: meddling students, gossiping coworkers, delicious lunches, private tragedy, public tension, dusty libraries, sparring matches, flower garlands, fake cigarettes, good and bad father figures, bangles and hairpins, and so much self-sacrifice it could be considered self-sabotage.
