But before it could punish him, a hiss zipped through the cool night air, and heat blossomed through the gap in his worn combat armor’s shoulder. Blood dripped sluggishly from the wound as adrenaline boiled up, and he lifted the shotgun toward the approaching, grinning raiders. Maybe this time he would get lucky, and he would die with the rest of them.
