Summary

It started as another off-campus party. Cheap lights, louder music, glitter in the drinks.
By morning, the city was quiet.Rumi ran. Zoey opened the door. Mira locked it.
Now they’re holed up in a dorm suite as sirens fade, broadcasts cut to black, and the people outside move in perfect, terrible unison.Something is wrong with the way they move.
No one knows what it is or how it spreads.Each supply run reveals more: shimmering powder, dissolving beads, whispers of something alive in the drink. The closer they get, the tighter the walls press, and the harder it is to tell contamination from survival, or fear from love.
(“There was a party,” she said. “Warehouse. It got… ugly. People were...fighting. I left.”
Mira’s head tilted. “Ugly how?”
“Just… a lot. Punching, biting, shoving. I didn’t” Rumi swallowed. Her mouth was dry; the sirens out there were wet. “I didn’t stay.”
Mira took a step closer, soft-soled shoes not making a sound on the rug. “You showed up with other people’s blood on you.” A beat. “None of it is yours.”)

“ - t’sokay,” Rumi tries to assure Zoey, who's frantically hovering, but her words are slurred. “It only scratched me. I wasn’t bit.” Her back aches from where the alpha had thrown her, but it’s nothing compared to the pain where its claws had ripped into her.
“Why’d you push me out of the way?” Zoey demands, and there is so much pain in her voice that Rumi wants to reach for her, but Rumi’s hand won’t do anything but twitch uselessly at her ruined side.
“Had to…” Rumi feels woozy, like she’s floating on a cloud, but she still manages a weak smile. “You were in danger… s’worth it…”
“Idiot,” Zoey sobs. “You’re such an idiot, Rumi.”
Rumi wants to laugh but it comes out like a cough, the sound thick and wet, as the red spills out past her smile in a rush.
Ryu Rumi was trained to be a Hunter just like her mother before her. Until one night a Hunt goes horribly wrong and Rumi becomes the very thing she had sworn to destroy.
Years since she fled Korea, Rumi firmly believes her past to be in the past.
Only she’s never been that lucky.
