“Here, you can sit by Evan,” Mariah says, practically shoving Eddie down onto one of the logs next to a boy with sandy brown curls and the bluest eyes Eddie has ever seen—bluer, even, than Shannon’s, which Eddie hadn’t thought was possible. Above and below his eyebrow are a few splotches of pink—a birthmark, if Eddie had to guess—and covering his jaw is a thin layer of reddish stubble. He gives her a kind smile, a glint of interest clear in those blue eyes, and suddenly Eddie’s cheeks are growing uncomfortably warm.
