Summary
He finds himself in the bathroom. The tap’s on. When did he turn it on?
The sound of rushing water makes his skin crawl and the vice tighten around his lungs. He can still breathe. That’s fine. He’s fine. His hands tremble. That’s fine. He’s fine. He shuts the tap off with a shaky hand, staring at his reflection like he’s waiting for it to crack.
He’s fine.
He’s on the one-thirty-six’s firetruck again. He’s reaching his arms out, trying and failing to pull strangers up onto the roof of the vehicle as the water recedes. There was an electrical sound at one point. A zap, he thinks? He wasn’t paying attention. That’s the point. He wasn’t paying attention. He’d heard the splash, the terrified gasps of the others on top of the firetruck. He’d looked back. Christopher was gone.

Summary
Buck tilts his head, eyebrows scrunching as he takes in the array of flowers, “What’s all this, superman?”
Chris rolls his eyes, “Flowers, duh.”
“Fair enough, that was kind of a stupid question, but why?”
“So, we can press them!” Chris picks up a daisy, twirling it. “And next week, if they’re dry we can make bookmarks, or stickers!”
“You actually want to come back next week?”
If he rolls his eyes any harder, Chris thinks his eyes might get stuck, “That’s another dumb question, you’re my best friend.”

Summary
“I— I should get out of your hair,” he says.
Eddie turns to look at him, the movement sharp. There’s a look on his face that looks like he thinks Buck might have lost his entire mind.
“Did you hit your head on something?” he asks drily, like he knows that Buck didn’t. Buck hesitates anyway.
“Uh,” he says ineloquently. “I don’t think so.”
“Then why are you saying things that don’t make any sense?”
in other words, the diaz boys take buck home with them after the tsunami.

Summary
Buck knows without looking when Eddie reaches the last picture by his sudden gasp. Christopher in profile, from below. His red glasses, yellow shirt, and golden curls stand out in contrast to the grey-blue background of the sky and water behind him. He’s looking out to sea, one arm raised in excitement. It was difficult to balance holding Chris steady on the bench and getting the angle right, but Buck remembers the look of wonder and joy on his face and how deeply he had felt the need to document it in the moment.
When he turns back to look, Eddie is still frozen with his fingers held up to the screen like he’s touching the past. In between them, it is an unbelievable miracle that this boy is safe. Eddie looks up, finally, and Buck can see his glistening eyes even in the low light.
“Can you send me these?” Eddie asks in a rough voice.
Buck nods.
“It might take a while for the memory to hurt less,” Eddie says, “but I think we need this one framed.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah. This… Buck, this is why I trust him with you. Because you see him like this. Like I do.”

Summary
Eddie looked...picked apart. Laid out in a way no one was supposed to see. Like he forgot how to hold himself together, barely grasping onto the pieces, stuck debating if trying is even worth the effort anymore.
Suddenly Buck wonders if he should grab his keys and Christopher for that emergency room visit.
"Eddie?"
Eddie doesn't even acknowledge him for a moment, just holds his head down, breathing through his mouth, probably too congested for anything else. Buck wishes there was a bit more light, just enough to see where the man's eyes were, if they were closed. If Buck was crazy for thinking he didn't look that far off from praying.
Or, the Diaz boys are sick and Eddie gets a little lost because of it. Buck steps in when it becomes too much. Ft. hard conversations and confessions, teaching and learning from one another, and a lot of Diaz family goodness.
Love is stored in a box of popsicles, etc etc.

Summary
Achingly slowly, Eddie had turned his phone around to show them too.
In a voice Eddie had never heard out of Chimney before, he'd muttered "Oh God". Eddie had seen his eyes flick over to the water.
Bobby hadn't said anything, hadn't made a single sound, but Eddie had seen the look in his eyes, one he was sure was mirrored in his own. Both of their kids were somewhere out there.
"Can you work?" Bobby had asked him.
"I have to." He'd replied.
"Can you Cap?" Hen had asked, softly.
Bobby had nodded, just once. "We don't know what's happened out there. So, we operate on the assumption that everything- everyone is okay."

Summary
“I really don’t want to put you out anymore than I have just by being here tonight, Eds.” Buck says, tone bordering on a whine, insistence thick inside it. “I can just sleep on the couch.”
“Absolutely not.” Eddie waves him away, adjusting the pillows and pulling an ottoman over, tossing his phone down onto the coffee table with a glance up to Buck’s face. “You nearly died trying to get to my kid today, man. You deserve to sleep in a real bed.” Or the one where Buck crashes at the Diaz house the night of the tsunami, sharing has always been caring, and Eddie has a habit of caring too much.Series

Summary
Eddie reached for the small piece of metal laying on top of a broken piece of a sign for some carnival game, gloved fingers closing around the thin metal chain and lifting it up. How it hadn’t been swept out into the ocean with any of the surges, Eddie didn’t know, but lifting it up and wrapping the chain around his hand so the medallion hanging on it rested in his palm, he heard Buck’s voice in the back of his mind saying something about the universe and how it would try to say things. He’d always thought the concept was so stupid. The universe couldn’t speak, and even if it could, what use would it have, telling Eddie things? A gasp tore through his chest, past his lips, as it hit him what he was holding in his hands. The Saint Christopher medallion was supposed to be around Buck’s neck, where he clasped it after sitting down on the edge of Buck’s hospital bed, his leg wrapped in a thick, white cast, and telling Buck that he needed him to always come back to him, to them.

Summary
His mind won out, in the end
Which, if he really thinks about it, is how it had always been. He’d be doing good, really good, and then something, sometimes barely anything, would get him on edge again.
From there, it was unstoppable. It started as an itch. The feeling and need unrecognizable… until it wasn’t. Until he ended up back on the bathroom tile with a sliver of metal in his hand.
~~~~~~~
Or, After the Tsunami, Buck is not okay. He is overwhelmed with guilt from losing Christopher, and is secluding himself from everyone, especially Eddie.
When he finally reaches his breaking point, Eddie appears to pick the pieces up and hold him together.
Summary
The makeshift-hospital sheets are pooled around his hips, and the lights are a cool, sterile white, dim in the late evening; his lungs heave with his breaths, and he’s dizzy with the way everything rushes back, clarity and confusion hurtling toward him in one twisted package of a sudden flood of thought. He’s only slept for a few hours, but he feels like it’s been years – and yet he’s entirely unrested, all at once. Or the one where Christopher didn’t make it out of the tsunami, even Eddie can’t seem to blame Buck, and sometimes you just need to feel hated.
The immediate threat is gone, Chris is safe and in his arms, so the gravity of it all hits him like a truck as Chim, Hen, and Bobby lower Buck into the cot behind him.
It makes him adjust his grip on Christopher, getting him properly on his lap, before standing up and walking to Buck like something is pulling him.
Summary
It’s late, and it’s dark, and it’s not like Eddie really wants to be standing in the middle of the dusty intersection of two trails in the middle of Topanga State Park at 3AM, but well—
He has no other choice.
Eddie sets the match to the sigil. The fire catches smooth and slow, following the curve of the circle until the ends meet and the flames go white.
Nothing happens, and Eddie stands there, breathing and bleeding and burning, watching the last of his hope slip through his fingers and then—
“Edmundo Diaz. Now that's one Hell of a name to conjure with.”
