Lup’s died before. Obviously. Gods, he’s watched her die before; watched from the ship as she battled their unbeatable pursuer to the bitter end. Lup is bold and reckless, and Taako’s good out here.
This shouldn’t feel different. It shouldn’t.
So why does it?
He knows the answer. It sits heavy and cold in his stomach.
He’s alone. He’s going to be alone. For months.
It feels real, this time. More real than it ever was, back when she’d collapse to the ground a mile below them only to materialize, fully intact, mere seconds later. It’s real.
Lup is dead.

The world loved Taako.
For once in his gods-damned life, people loved him. They didn’t care about all the flaws, they didn’t care where he came from or who he was before. They loved his food and they loved him. No one would ever quite be at Taako’s level and that was something he thrived on. There would never be anyone who could measure up. Taako deserved this happiness. He worked for it. He wasted his fucking life away for it.

Summary
Taako made two promises to his sister early on in this seemingly endless mission. Firstly, he isn’t allowed to intentionally cut a cycle short, no matter how much time is left, no matter how much he misses her. Secondly, if she’s gone, he has to take care of Barry.
He isn’t sure what his sister was thinking with the second one. ‘Taako’ and ‘take care of’ are not words that naturally go together for anyone other than Lup. He loves the entire crew, of course he does, but he would rather kill for them than comfort them.
This is the first cycle where Lup is dead and neither Taako nor Barry had gone with her.

He doesn’t get the chance to finish because Lup is already sprinting past him. They hear the sound of shattering glass. “It has a latch...” Barry mumbles, his head in his hands. They would have to go to the black markets to find another tube, now.
The footsteps on the stairs sound much more solid coming up than they had been running down. The door is kicked open and there’s Lup in her corporeal form.
