    Three months after defeating Darth Vader on Bespin and stripping him of the Force, Jaina Solo Fel is still stuck decades in the past. She's surrounded by the ghosts of long-dead friends and living, too-young family, called upon to lead and teach her mentors and elders.

    Three months after meeting her time-travelling niece from the future and defecting from the Empire, Mara Jade is settling into her post in Rebel Intelligence, balancing analysis and black ops with Jedi training. Ignoring her Force bond with Luke Skywalker grows more difficult by the day, as does ignoring the feelings she most certainly does NOT have for the Jedi farmboy. Looming ever closer is the inevitable confrontation with Palpatine, her former master, and all that it entails.

      Jix pudo haber sido el primero, y ciertamente el más extravagante, pero estaba lejos de ser el último ex soldado imperial que el padre de Luke envió en su camino.

      No es que «enviado» debiera tomarse literalmente en la mayoría de los casos, pero con tenaz perseverancia, el joven Jedi había logrado aceptar que la repentina afluencia de desertores imperiales que la Alianza vio durante los siguientes meses se debía a que su padre había pensado, con bastante vehemencia, en ciertas personas : «Podrían servir mejor a la galaxia en otros lugares». Y a partir de ahí, las cosas se habían agravado.

      Luke había sospechado algo así; después de todo, era un poco extraño que tantas personas cuyas carreras habían comenzado antes o en los primeros días del Imperio de repente dieran un paso atrás (metafóricamente hablando), dieran una mirada larga y dura más allá de las expectativas de los viejos hábitos y se dieran cuenta de que la creación de Palpatine había fracasado espectacularmente en cumplir con los ideales del Nuevo Orden en el que se había fundado.

    Not all in the fractured Empire accept this change! Admiral Gilad Pellaeon leads a breakaway faction of Imperials who reject this new government. Their position is precarious, as the fanatical New Order is committed to eliminating them at all costs—but Pellaeon and his allies have secret resources and hidden bases to strike from, thanks to the legacy of Grand Admiral Thrawn.

    The New Republic is eager to take advantage of the Empire’s division! General Wedge Antilles prepares his fleet for an invasion of Corellia, while Jedi Knights Luke Skywalker and Mara Jade recruit candidates for the revived Jedi Order.

    Summary

    Legends-based AU (though using some elements from Disney-canon) centred around the Empire of the Hand, a faction in the Unknown Regions developed by Grand Admiral Thrawn, first touched upon by Timothy Zahn in The Hand of Thrawn Duology, but forgotten about by all the other Legends authors. I imagine the Empire of the Hand to be a lot stronger in my AU, since after Thrawn's death, it's headed by his wife, Xelarra, Empress of the Hand.

    The fanfics in this series also form the "foundation" of my original novel, "The Spiral Empire".

    Having re-read the Wraith trilogy during the pandemic (and with a lot of free time), I wondered what the series would look like from the POV of Dorset Konnair - the aggressively fast A-Wing pilot with lots of tattoos. Now it’s getting into the Thrawn trilogy. (Part 3, on the aftermath of Selaggis, ended with a hook about Thrawn and C’Baoth.)

    Part 4 includes my idea of what the Wraiths were doing then, alongside the A-Wing pilots who are expanded from their novel depiction or original characters. The main three each get a bit of romantic subplot in this, but that’s kept in the background compared to the action. There isn’t graphic violence, but the dark nature of the war is an element in this even more than Parts 2-3.

    Since I took a pause after Part 3, this opens with a list of the characters and some “the story so far” details in the first chapters. This whole thing is very niche around the Star Wars stories I enjoy most, and there’ll be some obscure references to the X-Wing books/comics and other Star Wars works as well as callbacks to my own Parts 1-3. I usually explain that in the chapter notes.

    Soontir has studied the Rogues as opponents but he does not yet know what to make of them as colleagues. They lack… not discipline precisely. In battle they fight with the mix of rigid discipline and unpredictable chaos to be expected of the elite unit the Rebels— the New Republic —bills them as. Otherwise Antilles’ pilots display a casual disregard for structure and hierarchy that is unsettlingly reminiscent of the 181st when Soontir had first arrived.

     

    Antilles does not resemble his sister, Klivian and Celchu have grown into seasoned soldiers rather than the green cadets he had trained, and Janson is more complicated than his Imperial intelligence file would suggest.

    In short, upon his defection to the New Republic, Soontir Fel finds that Rogue Squadron is not entirely what he expected.

    Set at the start of the Family Ties run of the X-wing: Rogue Squadron comics (issues 26-27), right after the end of In the Empire’s Service and The Making of Baron Fel (issues 21-24 and 25).
