Sure, he trusted her, Emma, with a mane of bright orange hair that bounced as she walked, with a smile that shone with force greater than he could comprehend, with a kindness so boundless that she’d even forgiven him. But, she was still naive, dealing with forced outside of anyone’s control. Gods even.
Just then, a familiar voice called, a voice that had been absent for a long time, one that seemed to hold the weight of a thousand worlds. Still young and high yet weighed down by troubles that no child should have ever had to endure. “Ray, come on!”
His legs moved forward, unbound by his mind. Before he had processed the words he had already followed the instructions, completely trusting.

Emma, with scraped knees and a chipped tooth smile against a face stained with freckles. Emma who still raced her siblings to breakfast and pretended to lose. Emma, staying up for hours to learn the morse code in Minerva’s books, falling asleep in the library. Emma with burn marks on her calloused hands. Emma, auburn hair stained with blood, the smoldering house behind them still not quite burning as much as the determination in her eyes.
Emma who got into fights knew she couldn’t win if there was even a chance of saving someone. Emma, promising to strangers she had never even met, that they would all get out of this hunting ground alive.
I don’t care what it takes, Ray vowed as Emma grew colder by the second, so unlike sunlit days dragging him from the shade, with warm smiles and soft blankets and bitter tea and old books.
I won’t let that happen again.

It was unbearable, it made him feel more like the premium piece of meat he was supposed to be than he liked. If it weren’t for his painstakingly trained self-control there would've been a nasty argument for Emma to mediate by now.
The aforementioned girl, of course, had been the one who suggested he wait this whole thing out in the first place. Let him come to you, Ray, she said. He scoffed internally. He was out of patience–either Norman spat it out or Ray would be making him.
