Emma, with scraped knees and a chipped tooth smile against a face stained with freckles. Emma who still raced her siblings to breakfast and pretended to lose. Emma, staying up for hours to learn the morse code in Minerva’s books, falling asleep in the library. Emma with burn marks on her calloused hands. Emma, auburn hair stained with blood, the smoldering house behind them still not quite burning as much as the determination in her eyes.
Emma who got into fights knew she couldn’t win if there was even a chance of saving someone. Emma, promising to strangers she had never even met, that they would all get out of this hunting ground alive.
I don’t care what it takes, Ray vowed as Emma grew colder by the second, so unlike sunlit days dragging him from the shade, with warm smiles and soft blankets and bitter tea and old books.
I won’t let that happen again.

Yugo approaches Ray’s bed and lifts the covers. He expected Ray to be reading, or at least napping, but instead he’s met with the image of a boy curled up in a little ball. He’s shiny with sweat and his expression is one of pain. “Christ, what happened to you?”
“I-I’m fine,” Ray rasps.
“Liar,” Yugo feels his cheek. It’s hot. “What hurts?”
“Nothin-”
“Tell the truth.”

Ray’s mind moves a mile a minute. It’s too fast for him to understand his own thoughts. It’s disorienting and confusing. His vision tunnels. His hearing muffles. His legs are as steady as twigs. His muscles are jello. There’s a faint ringing in the distance. Everything is too bright. Did a bomb go off? Did the shelter implode? Who pressed the button? What is happening?
“Come on,” He hears Yugo’s voice through the cascade of terrifying ideas. The scenery around Ray moves and shifts. It’s dizzying. He feels himself falling in slow motion, closer and closer to the ground, but something holds him up. Strong arms keep him going forward.
His butt collides with something soft and springy, a mattress. It doesn’t support him. It’s like he’s floating on a raft atop choppy seas. It’s sickening.
“Ray?” Yugo’s voice is softer than usual. His face comes into focus as he crouches to Ray’s level in front of him. “Ray, I’m here, what’s wrong?”

She gave him the pen and a letter, which will help him and their family to survive in this unknown world. At least, it’s what she said.
