Summary
“Are you lonely, Jack?” She looks at him, the corner of her mouth quirking up into a smile that doesn’t touch her eyes. “Because I think I’ve spent the last few years pretending that I’m not and it’s the one thing I’ve. . .” A huff of a humorless laugh. “Failed spectacularly at.”
Jack frowns, deep enough to feel his forehead creasing. “You’re too hard on yourself.”
She tilts her head, the smile the same. “You didn’t answer my question.”
Jack has made it a point in his life to never lie to Samira, and he’s done a damn good job of it. He is many things, but a liar is not one of them—save for the rare occasion where a lie could change someone’s life. When it comes to Samira, he has no secrets. After all, it’s not lying if she’s never asked him, specifically, about his feelings for her, so there’s never a reason to brandish that particular truth. He’s pretty good at finding loopholes, too.
So he doesn’t lie to her now. “Yeah. I am.”

Jack finds a lump.
He decides to do absolutely nothing about it.
(Or, how Jack Abbot loses his leg. Although he resents that phrase, he knows what happened to it — it’s not lost).

Summary
Dr. Jack Abbot spent the last year moving in a daze, reeling from the loss of his wife and struggling to work through the gaping hole in his life. During that time, a new class of interns started at PTMC. One in particular starts to stand out. She doesn't seem to sleep, doesn't eat, and spends more time in the ED than any resident should be capabale of. As he starts to spend more time with her, he quickly learns there is no one else like Dr. Samira Mohan.
Dr. Samira Mohan is good at reading people's emotions. It helps her be a good doctor, able to sense what a patient needs and offer the right reassurance to keep them from spiraling. When she starts working with Dr. Jack Abbot, she can't tune out the deep well of grief that surrounds him, the loneliness and desperation that seems to follow him everywhere. And she can't help but feel drawn to him, even when it puts her secret at risk.

Summary
"Jack was so tired. So tired of being different, of being cold, of being afraid. Of being alone. Staying outside, always looking in, always wishing. Looking through the windows, looking in at the candlelight, the laughter, the liveliness of it all, the family that he could never have. And yes, it was normally just a flash of emotion, a blink of pain passing through his shields, a touch of jealousy that hit him like a wave. Never real, always fleeting."

Summary
"They didn't work.
Michael knew that, and he knew it painfully well. Jack was quick, and smart, and wonderful. He moved like a living flame, moving between gurneys like a forest fire. He didn't slow down or stop, and when he did, it was abrupt, a desperate collapse. He reminded Michael of a life and death decision, the hit when a patient's heart started again, the magic when a seemingly unsolvable case was solved.
Michael loved him."

Summary
“Bring everything,” Jack demands. “Send Collins, Mohan, Langdon, King— I want anyone even a little bit useful up here right now, Dana—”
“They’re coming,” Dana tells him down the other end, through the chaos he can hear, shouting voices and scrambling action. It’s such an eerie counterpoint to the thunder-rumbling silence up here on the roof that Jack’s stomach turns as he ducks for two more rescue breaths. “How bad is it?”
Jack pushes his fingers to Robby’s throat again and still finds nothing. His face is so white when he cups it between his hands, probing for anything, the slightest flutter of a pulse, and he can’t find it. Nothing.
“Bad,” he tells her. The phone slips from between his cheek and shoulder to crack on the rooftop.
