Summary
Jack is under no illusions that he’s a good person, he’s never tried to be good, only to do his best, to work off some undetermined sin. Or rather to make up for all the shit he’s seen, for the people he couldn’t save. His hands would never be free from blood, he would never stop suffering from the choice made by a naive and desperate boy.
Because of all that, because of his youth, his father, those cold sands, he thought he knew fear. And he did, he does. He knows how he reacts to it. How he has to wear headphones on the 4th July; how his body will be overcome with shakes when he relives losing his foot.
But Jack wasn’t expecting the sight of Samira Mohan’s limp body to be quite so terrifying.

(Jack copes with his fear at finding Samira unconscious) (Robby is supportive of Mohabbot)

Summary
"The 4th of July, historically, was not the best night for Jack Abbot. It was a night he preferred to spend at home, blinds drawn and noise-cancelling headphones on. He'd tried to take a night shift on it before, and it had ended with him curled up and sobbing in a corner while Bridget called Robby to take him home. Not his proudest moment.
But it had been 4 years since that experience, and much longer since he'd lost his leg. He could handle it this time. He didn't have much of a choice, anyway. Shen had broken his wrist, and Jack was not about to ask him to work like that. Robby had had a rough week, and the last thing he needed was another shift. Jack could handle this."
Or
Jack takes the night shift on the 4th of July. It doesn't end well.
