As hard as Maria fought to see the best in people, if the world both Before and After had taught her anything, it was that some people were not inherently good. Some people were just predators, and as devastated as she was that she hadn’t caught it earlier, that she’d have to tell Tommy, Maria couldn’t find it within herself to be surprised. She shivered as she remembered, just the night before, Joel holding Benji as he slept. Maria tucked her arm a little tighter around the baby on her lap, looking back up at the schoolteacher.

“Solana, are you hurt?” Ellie's hands are on Solana’s biceps as she stands in front of her, blocking the view of the dead infected in the snow.
“I-I don’t think so. It-it came out of nowhere.” Solana says, her voice shaky. She remembers leaning against the wall of the cabin, just trying to get some fresh air after the stifling heat of the inside, when she saw movement out of the corner of her eye. That was all she got before the infected was on her, teeth snapping, hands scratching. She’d managed to get her arms up to try and push it away, but that’s as far as she got before it knocked her to the ground.
Shit, her shoulder fucking hurt did she hit it when she hit the ground? She turns her head, and her blood runs cold when she sees where her too-big coat has slipped down to show the clear bite of an infected on her shoulder, oozing blood.
“No, no, no, no.” She intones desperately as her eyes come up to meet Ellie’s.
IE: Solana gets bit.

Ellie's sixteen, when she finally gets fed up with the foster system and decides to run for the hills. In her mind, she figures years of complete solitude, but the perfect opposite happens: she meets Sarah, another teenage runaway, her soulmate, her better half. Life is finally good.
And then the Accident happens, and because Murphy's Law is a bitch and a half that says that, if shit happens, more shit is bound to come, now she's pregnant too. Oh, and Sarah abandons her after a not-so-cryptic conversation about how she wants to go home before winter comes, leaving behind a note saying she'll come and find her again.
Clearly, she went home to her Dad, and clearly Ellie's not gonna stay in Bumfuck, Wyoming, waiting for her. No, she'll go look for her, even if it means having to drive all the way to Boston and live with her father-in-law.
Besides, considering her current state, it's gonna be nice to have a warm bed, a roof over her head, and a man who is so much of a girls' father that he's gonna let her annoy the crap out of him.
