Dead.
Anders was sure he was dead when he could formulate thoughts again. He tried to focus on small things, like his arms for instance which felt uncomfortably numb but slowly, so slowly feeling came back to him and with it pain that danced across every muscle that made him wish he was dead.
He debated on just laying here and accepting whatever fate fell upon him but the sudden incessant jabbing in his side forced him to crack his eyelids open. Immediate regret washed over him just like the nausea from the intrusion of the vague shapes in front of his eyes.
Another sharp jab forced his vision to clear slightly which was met with a very unimpressed and slightly bloody Fenris, who had his foot shoved into his side.
“Dont tell me im stuck with you in death too.”
“What? Dont be ridiculous, get up we need to find Hawke.” Fenris squinted at him through the low lighting and dust that whipped around them before crawling down the sloped debri Anders was precariously laying upon.
A simple excursion into the mountains turns into an inescapable mess when a cave collapse forces Fenris and Anders to rely on one another to make it home.

Hawke doesn’t ask him to go. Instead, slowly unfolds his spine and stands from where he’d been leaning over the hearth, asks him the question he’s held cupped in rough palms since Isabela, all soft, hushed whispers and coaxing fingers, had pulled him away from his mother’s corpse.
“Am I to blame for not saving her?”
There’s a stillness before Fenris replies.
“I could say no, but would that help?” Hawke isn’t looking at him anymore, though he feels his gaze burning between his shoulder blades. “You are looking for forgiveness, but I’m not the one who can give it to you.”
