“I do love you, Dean.” Cass says firmly, “But I was more than happy with what we had.”
When Cass stares at him with those big blue eyes Dean mentally wills himself to say something. Because he sure as hell isn’t letting this moment pass him by a second time.
They may have all the time in the world, but Dean feels he’s been wasteful enough.
“I wasn’t.” he blurts, drawing a shocked, slightly hurt look from Cass.
He rushes to clarify. “I mean I wasn’t happy with what we had.”
Gee, Dean, that sounds a lot better. He mentally kicks himself.
“What - what do you mean?” Cass sounds so meek and hesitant and all because Dean is dancing around something he still can’t accept.
He’s dead and he still can’t say it.

Dean Winchester’s love. He knows that he must have it; in a certain capacity. But he wants it to be different. He wants Dean’s love to be of the same caliber as his… from the same deep seated desire.
“I’m happy for you Dean.”
“No you’re not.” He says with a dry look. “Do you want to at least meet them?”
Castiel would rather jump into hell but okay.
“Where is she?”

Surveying the room, he finds nothing out of place. Castiel wonders where Dean’s lady is.
In typical Dean fashion, he saunters up to the closet and rips it open.
Really?
Castiel walks closer anyway, curiosity waring with his jealousy.
He looks inside and finds nothing.
“Do you see them?” Dean questions eagerly.
“No.” he says sourly.
Dean rolls his eyes. “Look closer.”
Castiel looks for the hell of it. And nothing. Big surprise.
“I see nothing but your lumberjack clothes and this infuriating mirror.”
Dean chuckles at his discomfort. “And who’s in the mirror, jackass?”
Castiel looks back, just to confirm.

The words aren’t even directed at anyone… rather just said vaguely into the air.
...
Big romantic gestures had never been his thing. But he knows, as much as Dean hates to admit it… he loves chick-flicks. He wants someone who will be over the top just because they love him. Maybe that’s why Sam hadn’t just told Cass to abandon the whole idea.
Cass and Dean are already sitting in the kitchen when he wakes up and Dean is half surprised that Dean hasn’t already started bar hopping for women. When he whispers his concerns to Cass, the angel just whispers back: “I asked him to stay.”
Sam is still standing there awestruck when Dean’s teeth make a loud clank.
“Cass, did you forget a cinnamon stick or something in here.”
Sam glances across at Cass who nervously leans against the table, analysing Dean’s every move. He assumes Cass is waiting till Dean is done with the pie to talk to him about his feelings.
“Cass what the hell is this?” Dean’s voice is a combination of breathy, hopeful and terrified.
Sam whips his gaze around to find Dean holding a silver ring coated in half-chewed pie.

Castiel fights to remain still under Dean’s ministrations as he swipes his thumb over the creases and sunken areas near Cass’ eyes. “You’re aging.”
“I am.”
“Are you – do you feel afraid.”
He looks Dean straight in the eye and with sincerity says: “No.” Because he isn’t afraid. He can still hear Dean’s prayer echoing inside his skull, like a song that had been seared into his brain. “I have you … and Sam to help me.”
“You do.” Dean’s voice is rough. Castiel realises how close to the things that should remain unspoken he’s treading, but he can’t help himself. Not when Dean is staring at him like that, eyes almost begging him to be the one to take the plunge.
“I –” Castiel clears his throat and squares his shoulders. “Maybe now I can grow old with you…” his pause is deliberate. His voice cutting off more abruptly than it should, leaving Dean with no choice than to recognise the pause for what it is; a fallacy. The barrier between what Dean perceives is right and wrong. The blockade separating the unspoken from the harrowing truth they’ve both known subconsciously for years.
And Castiel can’t bear to break it.
Not yet.
“… and Sam.”

Dean sees him freeze, one hand lingering on the edge of the table. After Purgatory… After Purgatory things were bad. In Purgatory, things were bad.
It was tumultuous. It brought up all the emotions that Dean doesn’t want associated with the angel right now. Like the need to kill his way through monster heaven just to find an angel who never wanted to be found.
Cass is right. He can’t talk to him; can’t look him in the eye.
But Dean can pray… not that he’s any good at that either.

Cass’ nose is almost poking Dean’s eye out but his face is the picture of concentration as he pinches Dean’s nose between his thumb and fore-finger, his other hand covering Dean’s mouth completely.
“Okay. What the hell?” he announces.
The thumb war is explainable, the twister was actually nice and though the dancing was strange, it has nothing on this.
“You two having a staring contest?” Sam wonders.
“No Sam.” Cass explains, picking up the stop watch. “Dean said he could hold his breath for two minutes. I didn’t believe him.”
“Ha-ha! Sucker!” Dean wheezes as the watch beeps.
“Though,” Cass rubs his chin in consideration, “A staring contest is a very good idea Dean.”
Then they both sit pull up a chair and sit, bending forward to rest their elbows on their knees in a way that pushes their faces even closer.
“Let’s begin.” Cass announces.
Dean nods once, then they stare.
By now Sam should be used to it. But as bad as they may be, they’ve never stared at each other for over two minutes before.
…
Sam is flabbergasted.
Cass is engineering these… games, in order to get closer to Dean. Physically closer.
And Sam wants to know why.

Castiel had caught sight of his name and he’d instantly known it would be nothing good. But this…This broke his heart.
To have everything that Dean hated about him splayed out in the open like this…
Determined he marched out of the room with new purpose. He can do this. He can do it for Dean.

Summary
Starts way before the show, even before Lucifer's fall and it goes through the timeline of all characters I deem necessary, I'm changing and putting in things that will make the characters completely different from certain aspects of the show so beware.
Also Michael and Lucifer are both gonna be redeemed at some point in the story because I feel like it.
Also at some points in the story it will seem like a polyamorous relationship - take that anyway you want, I just see nothing wrong with doing stuff like kissing, holding hands, cuddling etc. With family and friends.
This isn't a completely fun and nice fic as you can tell from the tags, there will be horrible things mentioned and described in it, but it will have fluffy and fun moments along with the dark ones.
This is more like a story with debriel in it, rather than a story completely focused on debriel.
The original characters are side characters and don't have much importance to the story.
If you are not comfortable with anything I write here, don't bother commenting about it unless it is to tell me to add it as a tag, if it's just to say something mean then don't read and comment.
