Summary
Edwin Payne is disillusioned by soulmates. In fact, he's made a lucrative career of writing romance novels about non-soulmate couples. But during a bachelor(ette) trip, he does the unthinkable — he wakes up married in Vegas.
When Thomas, Edwin’s now-husband, reveals that they are soulmates, Edwin feels deceived. In a world in which your soulmate’s first words to you appear on your skin in their handwriting on your sixteenth birthday, soulmate divorces are taboo and difficult to obtain, at least without jumping through bureaucratic hoops.
Vegas dinner-theatre-performer Thomas King's heart has been broken more times than he can count, but with his unique soul words, he's always held out hope that he'd find his perfect match one day. So when Edwin says those magic words and asks to marry him in the same night, he gets swept up in the moment.

The Devlin murders lead to a very quiet walk home. So quiet that a little sound breaks through it all and then everything falls apart and then back into place.
Edwin followed the tiny meows until he came across a street drain. Cold sludge trickled through the nearly covered grating, and there, deep in the dark, sat a little glowing star of a white kitten. The grating must have been slowly degrading over time, because a perfect kitten-sized gap in the bars had broken away.
The kitten was damp, its fur pressed with the wetness of the pool it sat in, and its tiny eyes fixed up at the hole calling, calling, calling for mama.

Summary
Crystal Palace moves to Port Townsend, Washington. Already tired of her new school, she spots someone interesting: Niko Sasaki. She wants to ask her out, but her new friend Monty informs her of the rule: Niko can only date when her adoptive brother Edwin does.
Crystal doesn't mind that so much. After all, she's got plenty of her family's money, as well as a man who's willing to spend his own money to try to date Niko. The only problem is finding someone willing to date Edwin.
There's Edwin's best friend, Charles, but other than being devastatingly straight, he won't accept money or betray Edwin like that. There's Monty, who Edwin already turned down. And it seems like everyone else at Port Townsend high is scared of him. Which leaves one person: so-called bad boy Thomas King.
Crystal just has to trust that this won't all backfire.

Since his lover was a supernatural being, Edwin could feel the ghost of his touch (pun intended), and that alone was a sensation that had taken the detective weeks of getting used to.
Thomas smiled at the content look on the ghost's face. "Just imagine," he purred in Edwin's ear, "if we had one night, and you could feel this," he brushed his fingers along the line of Edwin's jaw, "Or this," he said before he pressed his lips to the detective's.

They've finally made it home, and they're doing well. The case load had grown with every passing day. It's been a while, but Edwin just can't get the Cat King out of his head.
Meanwhile, across the ocean, the royal subjects of the Cat King watch him pine. Every time he dies, his body goes through something that can only be called a heat. He just- keeps doing it alone, so his subjects, or namely one kitty named Buttons, gets so fed up with his pining that he takes initiative.
“What the fuck is going on-” the Cat King demanded, and he spun around, staring down at the throngs of cats. No one moved a muscle, not until Edwin took a small step forward.
“That would be about us.” He offered as calmly as he could.
Charles had heard the waver, though, tiny and almost unnoticeable to anyone but him, and he raised an eyebrow at Edwin knowingly. Edwin could almost hear his voice in his head as he said really mate, I can see it, but really?
The moment he spoke, the Cat King’s head turned and found him instantaneously. The Cat King smiled, and it was soft, “Edwin.” He breathed.
