Summary
Desperate for coin to keep her sister alive, Aglaea accepts a contract that sounds insultingly simple: survey a remote forest, collect samples, and confirm whether the locals’ superstitions have teeth.
The Grove is a forgotten village clinging to old fears. Children speak of a guardian in the trees, and even the bravest men won’t cross the border. But money is money, and Elder Caenis is paying more than Aglaea can afford to refuse.
Armed with a whip and no patience for ghost stories, she expects overgrown trails and empty woods. What she finds instead is a forest that folds in on itself, tricks the senses, and watches her back with intent.
The deeper she goes, the clearer it becomes: the job was never simple and neither is what waits in the heart of the forest.
