Chapter Text

Abaddon coughed hard, his throat feeling raw and his body feeling weak. Nathan rested a hand against his forehead feeling the abnormally warm skin. The seven year old fussed letting out a weak cry. Nathan ran his fingers through Abaddon’s hair, the child had large eye bags.

“Hey, bud. Can’t sleep well?” Nathan asked quietly and he softly stroked the young boys head.

“I believe I may be dying.” Abaddon coughed hoarsely as he curled deeper into his blanket. “Nathan, do not let them find my buried allowance.”

Nathan chuckled softly, “you aren’t dying, and who is ‘them’?” Nathan asked as he grabbed a bottle of grape flavored NyQuil he brought to Abaddon’s room. He poured some into the cap and handed it to the sick child. “Here, it’ll make you feel better and help you sleep.”

Abaddon sat up slowly glaring at the medicine like it had personally offended him. “Very well, but if I find out you are trying to kill me. I will skin you and wear your flesh.” He muttered before downing the cap full of NyQuil. After drinking the medicine he coughed sticking his tongue out in disgust.

“See, now that wasn’t so bad, was it?” Nathan mused, trying not to laugh at Abaddon’s expression. “Aw, poor Abbie,” he chuckled ruffling Abaddon’s hair before getting up to leave. “Now, go to bed, bud, come get me if you need something, alright?” With that Nathan left the room shutting the door gently behind him.

Abaddon laid back down in his bed snuggling into the sheets. He didn't like to admit it but he liked it here. He hoped things wouldn’t change, he felt wanted for once in his life.

—----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He wandered the halls calling out for Nathan, he would have been up by now making Abaddon his Sunday pancakes. He walked up to Nathan’s room hearing Con Air playing on the other side. He must have fallen asleep watching it, Abaddon didn’t really like it but he knew it made Nathan incredibly happy to have someone watch with him so Abaddon endured it.

“Nathan?” Abaddon called out as he gently opened the door. The creak the door made as it opened in the quiet hotel echoed. He saw Nathan sitting on a sofa in front of his tv completely still. Abaddon walked up to the sofa making his way to stand in front of Nathan’s limp form. The man smelled overwhelmingly like grapes and it made Abaddon’s stomach turn, he hated the smell. “Nathan, awake, I am hungry.” The child whined, kicking the sofa’s leg and making Nathan’s body shake with the sofa.

Abaddon crawled into Nathan’s lap and shook his shoulders, “Nathan!” He yelled his small fists balling in Nathan’s sweater. Abaddon froze as he felt the man’s body, Nathan was freezing and his chest was completely still. Abaddon let out a shaky little gasp as tears welled in his eyes. “Dad?” Abaddon muttered to the corpse he was sitting with.

Nathan often compared Abaddon to a feral kitten, maybe he was right. Abaddon would never admit it though, even as he curled into Nathan’s lap. Even now smelling of bitter grapes and feeling cold to the touch Abaddon felt comforted. If Nathan wasn’t so deep in sleep maybe he would have cooed and comforted Abaddon, he’d say everything would be okay and tell the child not to cry as he combed his fingers through the seven year old’s hair.

At least that’s what Abaddon told himself, he was sure he was right though. He hoped Nathan would wake up or say it was some weird and cruel prank. Yet he remained unconscious even as police came into the hotel, even after they called a lady named Katherine asking if she’d like to take him in. Nathan stayed asleep as he was burned into dust and put into a vase which Katherine lost. Katherine said she was his aunt and she and her children moved into the Undervale.

Abaddon was happier after Nathan's ghost appeared a long while after his death. He had missed him a lot, and Nathan had seemed happy he wasn’t thrown into foster care again. Abaddon didn’t know what to think of his aunt or cousins, he seemed to get along fairly well with Esther and he really didn’t know what to think of Ben. Katherine was colder than Nathan, Abaddon almost thought he had offended her somehow. Luckily he had one living thing he could count on, his pet tarantula Jarbon that Nathan had got him when he mentioned he liked spiders.

Jarbon wasn’t mean to him, he just listened to his sorrows without belittling him. Jarbon was the only one he could trust at this point, spiders are better than humans in Abaddon’s opinion. Now though, Abaddon would have to tolerate children his age, Nathan homeschooled him but Katherine said he would have to go to school with other children. Abaddon was disgusted by the mere thought of having to put up with children his own age. He was far more intelligent than those lowly first graders. He’ll just have to tolerate it though, he doesn’t want them to throw him out like his real father. He just has to cope with having such big changes happen again and disrupt his perfect life.

Maybe it won’t be so bad though, at least Nathan is still here. He said he wouldn’t leave him ever again. Abaddon wouldn’t know what to do if he truly did.

Chapter 2: Esther and Abaddon Commit Arson

Esther and Abaddon (and Jarbon) bond and accidentally commit arson, Katherine gets mad and Abaddon has a mental break down in his sleep.

Chapter Text

“I just feel like no one takes me seriously, they don’t get me like you do, Jarbon.” Abaddon confided as the spider crawled across his knuckles. “I wish it was just you, Nathan, and me again.” He sighed as he watched Jarbon crawl onto his other hand.

All eight of the spider’s eyes locked onto Abaddon, the child cooed being a finger to gently rub Jarbon’s head. “Do you want to watch tv with me?” Abaddon asked as he stood up from the floor and walked with Jarbon to the sitting area. As he descended the stairs he saw Esther sitting on the couch already watching tv. Abaddon debated if he should go back up stairs and use his ipad or if he and Jarbon should ask to watch tv with Esther.

Before he could make the decision to go back up stairs Esther spotted him standing at the bottom. “Abaddon, wanna watch tv with me? It’s this true crime show.” Esther was smiling at him, eager to bond with her cousin.

Abaddon froze, still holding Jarbon close, he stared at her for a moment before silently nodding and walking over to the couch. Esther scooched over making room for Abaddon to sit comfortably. He gently sat Jarbon on his shoulder, letting the spider crawl around on him. He and Esther sat in comfortable silence as they watched the true crime show, it wasn’t what Abaddon would usually watch but he had to admit it was a pretty interesting show.

Esther turned to him, curiosity shining in her eyes. “Uncle Nathan said you were taken from a cult, what was that like?” She asked with a wide smile plastered on her face.

Abaddon nodded, “I was, they were more of a catholic based cult. The main reason I was taken from it is because they thought I was possessed. My father used a cross shaped brand to burn the symbol into my skin. It burned off the top layers of skin and left a permanent cross burn scar. Third degree burns really hurt.” He explained staring out into nothing in particular.

Esther was silent for a moment before her eyes shimmered with amazement. “Cool, so like you have a giant scar somewhere?”

“Yes, on my chest. It still hurts sometimes.” Abaddon said, watching as Jarbon made his way to his lap, crawling on his thighs up to his left knee.

“How did you convince uncle Nathan to get you a spider?” Esther asked as she also watched Jardon make his journey.

“What do you mean? I just asked for one.” He questioned as he glanced at Esther in confusion.

Esther continued to watch the spider, not meeting Abaddon's gaze. “Uncle Nathan is terrified of spiders, he told me when I tried to prank Ben by putting spiders in his bed.”

“Hm, that is… peculiar.” Abaddor said, kicking his feet absentmindedly. He honestly didn’t mind talking with Esther, she was nice and didn’t think he was weird for letting a spider crawl all over him. Maybe having the Freelings move into the hotel wasn’t that bad.

“Hey, Abaddon.” Esther got up with her hands resting on her hips as she faced Abaddon grabbing his attention. “Wanna do something fun?”

Abaddon titled his head to the side like a confused puppy. “What did you have in mind?”

—------------------------------------one call to the fire department later—---------------------------------------

“What were you thinking?” Katherine said exasperated, Nathan stood behind her crossing his arms and giving Abaddon and Esther a disappointed look.

“I sincerely apologize, it probably won’t happen again.” Abaddon said stiffly, his head dropping down facing the ground. He shuffled his feet nervously, he didn’t like it when Nathan was upset with him. He really couldn’t care less what Katherine thought of him but he desperately needed Nathan to be proud of him.

Esther was standing next to him trying to explain. “Mom, I promise we did mean to light that tree on fire. I just wanted to show Abaddon my firework collection.” She honestly had no idea how it happened, one minute they were playing with fireworks (shooting them at birds) then the next there was a tree on fire.

“Well, no more fireworks.” Katherine said sternly, the two children groaned, Abaddon kicked the ground and Esther crossed her arms with a pout. “It’s getting late anyway, you both have school tomorrow. Head up stairs, brush your teeth and head to bed, I mean it Abaddon. I better not see you crawling through vents, it’s dangerous.”

Abaddon groaned as he stomped his feet about to throw a tantrum. “Come on bud, I’ll tell you a bed time story if you don’t argue.” Nathan said beckoning Abaddon to follow him inside the hotel. Abaddon begrudgingly followed, dragging his feet as he followed behind the ghost.

—----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was quiet and the wind was blowing peacefully, the only sound around was the birds and Nathan’s humming. He gently ran his hand through Abaddon’s hair, the child's head rested on Nathan’s lap. It was the best nap Abaddon has had in so long, he was so tired, but right now he felt at peace, like no one could hurt him ever again.
Nathan wouldn’t let anything happen to him, the cult couldn’t get him here. Abaddon could feel the warm sun beaming down on them. It was gently and comforting, a picnic basket sat beside Nathan, it was holding two pb&js, two apple juices, a small bag of sun chips, and a small bag of pretzels. Abaddon had told Nathan he’d never been on a picnic before which made the man insist that they needed to go on one.

Abaddon felt like he could stay like this forever, just him and Nathan with the peace and quiet. Suddenly, he felt something on his hands he brought one to look at only to see his hand covered in ash, he sat up and looked at Nathan only to see him crumbling away.

“Nathan? Nathan!” Abaddon panicked, grabbing at Nathan’s disintegrating form, tears welled in his eyes as he tried to grab Nathan’s arm. He only started disintegrating faster as Abaddon sobbed louder, “Father! Don’t leave me, am I not enough?”

Abaddon shot up his breathing coming out quick and ragged, he brought a hand up to his face only for it to come back wet. He was crying, he was pathetic. He wished his real father would have finished the job. He shouldn’t be here, he should be buried six feet deep in the ground letting the worms and maggots eat his flesh. He should just complete the job himself, he should just choke on a grape like Nathan. No, he can’t, Jarbon still has need of him, he knows Katherine would get rid of the spider in a heartbeat. He’ll have to endure, for Jarbon.
