Work Header

Tossed Salads and Scrambled Eggs

Summary:

After psychiatrist Lan Xichen's life implodes spectacularly, he returns to his hometown for a new start. With a new job and new friends, things are off to a good start until his aging father has to move in with him. When his younger brother falls for the quirky home care worker they hired to help with their dad, hijinks ensue.

inspired by the sitcom Frasier (yes, really)

Notes:

pleeeeeease shoot over a comment if at any point pages are missing from this or if there's an "image not found" type of error! There should be 30 script pages plus a title page. I'll do what I can to fix any problems with the image hosting if that happens.

This was created for the Three Bows Wangxian Discoord server's September monthly event! The month's theme is Sitcom September, and I went with the prompt "shenanigans."

Chapter 1: Pilot

Chapter Text

A/N: I made an honest attempt at understanding work skins, I promise! Alas, coding and I aren't friends. I went to film school; I'm not a woman in STEM. The title is a reference to the Frasier credit theme song.

For those unfamiliar with Frasier, here's all you need to know:

Dr. Frasier Crane is a successful psychiatrist coming fresh out of a divorce. He moves from Boston to Seattle, where his family is based. He hosts a radio show where he doles out advice. He and his brother, Niles, are pretty snobby, pretentious, and uptight, in stark contrast to their more blue-collar father, Martin. The cast is rounded out by Roz Doyle, Frasier's brassy producer and friend, Daphne Moon, an eccentric physical therapist who takes care of Martin, and Eddie, Martin's dog.

The series' main romance is between Niles and Daphne - initially at the start of the series, Niles is married to a wealthy heiress, but becomes instantly infatuated with Daphne.

There are frequent guest cameos from the callers who call into Frasier's show seeking advice.

For the MDZS Comps:

Lan Xichen = Dr. Frasier Crane

Lan Wangji = Dr. Niles Crane

Qingheng-jun = Martin Crane

Wei Wuxian = Daphne Moon

Nie Mingjue = Roz Doyle

"Liebing" = Eddie

With that out of the way,,,,,, enjoy!

A/N: How are we holding up post ao3 blackout???? I truly didn't expect to have this uploaded today, but cheers to that! I may post the final episode today if I have time, and if not today then definitely on Sunday.

This episode is inspired by the Frasier episodes "Dinner at Eight" (Season 1, Episode 3) and "First Date" (Season 5, Episode 20). There should be 26 script pages, so let me know if any are missing or if there are any errors with them not loading!

Chapter 3: Season Finale

Summary:

Best Supporting Actor Wei Wuxian takes it upon himself to be the best wingman for Lan Wangji's "date" with Mianmian.

Little does he know that the date isn't supposed to happen at all.

A/N: We've got 26 script pages in this chapter! As always, let me know if something is missing or not loading up correctly. This episode is inspired by the Frasier episode "First Date" (Season 5 Episode 20). For those unfamiliar with Frasier, Niles and Daphne STILL don't get together for another 4 seasons after that episode, so just know I spared you all an absurd amount of pining.

A/N: Thank you so much for reading! This was an incredibly fun project for me; I hadn't touched screenwriting software since graduating from film school in 2019. I had forgotten how much I loved writing for TV as a medium; at one point when writing I turned to my partner and said "why did I tell myself not to pursue a career in TV writing again?" and he said "because you didn't want to burn yourself out until you hated it, deal with people's shitty personalities, and craved something with more security so you could still write as a hobby and genuinely enjoy it?" To that, I could only say "oh yeah, true."

Writing fanfic "spec scripts" has been a long-time thing I've wanted to try (just ask the extensive list of ideas in my google drive). For those not familiar, a spec script is basically a piece of canonverse fanfiction - aspiring TV writers will write an episode of a show that they want to work on and use it to pitch themself to that show's showrunner to hopefully get staffed in their writer's room. I'd put off trying anything like this for a LONG time because I didn't want to sacrifice the proper formatting since I can't figure out coding for shit and also didn't want to spend an absurd amount of time getting my writing formatted correctly in HTML. I'm very grateful to the Three Bows Wangxian discord server for giving me the boost to write this in the first place, as well as the encouragement to figure out a means of posting this out to a wider audience. (P.S. - join the server if you feel inclined! It's been a really encouraging and supportive community, and the server has helped me immensely with getting engaged with my hobbies again when I'd been in a slump for over a year.)

I definitely want to give this another go in the future. While the image uploading option is a bit tedious, it's significantly faster and easier than coding (and doesn't look like complete trash on mobile), so there's nothing holding me back from it anymore! I'm not sure if it'll be more in this Frasier AU, or if I'll try out other series, or something completely original in this format. I may also give it a go for some of the older ideas I had for other fandoms I've written for! Either way, I'm stoked to explore this and am feeling reinvigorated as a writer.

I can't express how great a time writing this was for me, and I hope you had fun with it as well.
