In The Middle Of The Night

Chapter 18

Notes:

Yun is salty in these next few chapters not because she's jealous. As the Daisuke scene a couple chapters back implied, they don't necessarily have an open marriage (Hayate is asexual anyhow) but light flirting and whatever with other people is no big deal. Hayate and Greg actually kissed once and she was mostly okay with it. The reason she's salty is she simply does not like Ven.

This chapter had like three versions that kinda mashed together into one eventually with a bunch of extra scenes that I just felt wouldn't work when doing a mostly asleep drunk POV, to try to work into later chapters

Chapter Text

I don't know if you can hear me right now.

But I really am sorry for what is to come.

......Can you apologize to Sora for me too?

Sleep would be welcome, for one of those rare times. Hayate sunk into the mattress of the hotel bed and truly wanted to become one with it.

They'd decided it had been a very long day, and rather then deeply discuss this…revealation, Ven had suggested making it a tomorrow problem. Ven used some sort of influence to get the family an upgraded hotel room. Hotels were apparently free to all new residents, so Hayate didn't know if munny exchanged hands or not and did not care.

He did a low sigh, opening only one eye and seeing Sora and Kairi already passed out on the other bed.

Meanwhile, Ven was leaning down close to him. They did a low sniff. “Are you drunk?”.

“I’ve been having a bad day, let me have this.”

Ven did a little nod. “I can't judge, I think me and Tess lost like two years to some really well aged wine we found in Daybreak Town.”

That place sounded familiar…for some reason.

“Tess?”

Ven scratched the back of their neck, looking off to the side. “My uh, partner. Rosa’s other parent. They're not around right now so I can't introduce them… although you two might get along like a house on fire so maybe that's for the best!” Ven grinned. “I guess I'm drawn to darkness and its users.”

“That so.” Yun piped up from beside Hayate in a flat tone. She was still sitting up in the bed, and Hayate rolled onto his back and saw she was watching every of Ven's movements like she would strike any moment. Gosh he loved her…

“I’ll show you guys pictures tomorrows.” Ven had a bounce to their step. “Anyways I’ll let you rest. I’ll find you tomorrow.”

Hayate must have fallen asleep around then because he didn't remember Ven actually leaving, and he drifted in and out of a dreamless sleep, only to reawaken to no weight beside him and hushed voices.

“...if I don't know your intentions with him, how am I supposed to stop being a bitch?”

“Well you could just trust me. He clearly does.”

“I don't think he should. And what, showing up so conveniently like that?!”

“I have good timing, I guess.”

Hayate heard their words but didn't exactly process them, just grumbled quietly as something started licking his nose. Windy Two got up in his face, and the conversation silenced immediately. They didn't seem to realize he was awake though.

“...an Unversed… haven't seen one of those in a while…”

“Her name is Windy Two.”

“That so.” Ven echoed her previous tone and words.

“Well there was a Windy the First because she was a biter and all Hayate could think about was how you liked to bite him.”

“It was two times!” Ven whisper-yelled, and his foot steps seemed to move him closer to the door now. “Just get some sleep and we'll fight later.”

“Oh, so you want me at full energy to kick your ass?”

A laugh. “Yeah.” Then the door opened and closed gently.

Yun made a discontented sound, and then approached the bed again, crawling in and pulling him close. “I won’t let anyone hurt you again.” She whispered in his ear.

He drifted off again to those words.

They were stargazing the next night.
So.
Boring.

It was just other worlds, nothing special, Vanitas thought.

“I’m remembering some things.” Ventus admitted.

“Oh really.” Vanitas replied with a deadpanned tone. “Venty-Wenty finally starting to understand his purpose?”

Ventus rolled his eyes. “Oh totally, you should have been there.” Ventus rolled over onto his side, and dramatically and exaggeratedly told “My wife left me.” with a dramatic placement of his hand on his heart.

Vanitas snorted at the absuridity. “You're like, twelve, you never had a wife. ”

“Sixteen…maybe. The Master and my friends just guessed my age. But yeah, just messing with you.” Ven rolled back over. “I guess, I just remember…a city. And people. It must be my original world and maybe friends…and yet…”

“My original world is called Twilight Town.” Vanitas let slip out before he could think about it. “I plan to go back there once we create the chi-blade, maybe I can swing by your old world to honor you-” Vanitas meant it more mockingly, but didn't expect the broken laugh.

“There's not....much to go back to.”

Above them, another star went out.
