Love. Such a stupid thing.
Love only led to pain. The minute you love someone (no matter what type of love it is) they're in danger. The minute you care for someone, they're as good as dead.
Shadow had a late shift that afternoon. Which led to his new morning routine, brooding. Okay maybe it wasn't that new. But it was more a routine as ever now.
Shadow picked up his phone and scrolled through the notifications. New message from Sonic, missed call from Sonic, more new messages from Sonic, even more missed calls from Sonic, and one missed call from Rouge. Shadow lifted a brow at that.
Whatever, he wasn't in the mood to answer. But it'd be rude if he didn't. A simple text will be enough, Shadow concluded. A text was sent and Shadow was once again left alone, brooding.
Shadow sighed, this was hopeless. He grabbed his phone again wondering if he should answer Sonic. He put it back down and got ready for work. His shift was in an hour and he'd much rather be working than thinking of what to answer that idiot.
He wore a white, long sleeve, collared button down shirt. He pushed the sleeves back just above his elbows. He wore some nice straight, black, slacks. All that was missing was that tacky green apron and hat. I'll put it on at work, he thought.
Shadow's manager had told him to fix all the merchandise for the day, instead of working at the counter. Shadow sighed as he restocked the new tumblers on display. So many colors in the world but no the tumblers had to be blue.
The next tumbler was a bright cobalt blue. It had small emerald green hearts all over. Shadow pulled out another one. It was all black but had red hearts decorating it as well.
Stupid tumblers.
Shadow grabbed the empty boxes and made his way outside toward the recycling bin. His manager had always told him that recycling was good for the environment. The environment is the least of my worries, he always thought.
As the day went by he found himself checking his phone more than often. Who would text him? He had already pushed away the one person who would text him the most.
The day flew by much faster than Shadow had realized. The whole time Shadow tried to forget that Sonic existed. This obviously didn't work out.
Shadow's manager had left him the keys to lock up once he was done for the day. As Shadow finished packing up his things a little bell rang. Shadow's ears perked up.
“Hey.” Shadow knew who the voice belonged to. How could he forget that melodic voice or his laughter that sounded just like a wind chime.
“Shadow? Hey I know you hear me.” Shadow stayed where he was not bothering to turn his back to actually face the hedgehog. If I wait long enough he’ll leave, if I wait long enough he'll leave, Shadow thought as he shut his eyes.
“What the hell man. First you ghost me and now you can't even face me? If you didn't want to talk to me you could've just said so. You didn't have to make me feel hated, unwanted or anything.” Shadow's ears drooped down. He didn't want to make Sonic feel that way. But what other choice did he have?
“Can you at least face me?” Shadow turned around at the sound of Sonic’s voice cracking.
Sonic still looked as beautiful as he did the last time Shadow saw him. Sure there were some differences yet they were all endearing. The way some of his cobalt quills stuck up. The way he slouched. He really was beautiful. Beautiful like the stars that shine up above. Beautiful like the sunsets and sunrises.
“But you have a girlfriend,” Shadow mumbled.
“I what?”
Shadow looked directly into Sonic's eyes realizing he voiced his thoughts. No going back now.
“Your girlfriend came in a few weeks ago. She told me that you kept babbling about this place and how you really liked it.” Shadow looked away.
“Shads.”
“No it's fine. I should've known that a guy like you already had a girlfriend. I shouldn't have done everything I did. It's my fault-”
“Shadow.” Shadow came back to his senses as he felt a gloved hand on his cheek. Ruby eyes started into emerald eyes carefully. Not wanting to look away but not knowing what to expect.
“Shadow I don't have a girlfriend. Amys’ always had a crush on me. But I never liked her back and I never will. Amys’ a great person but she's not for me.” Sonic smiled. That smile is going to the death of me, Shadow thought. That thought and that thought only lead to Shadow's next question.
“Then who is?”
“You.”
“What?” Shadow looked at Sonic in disbelief.
“I know I know. That's what Tails said too.” Sonic chuckled. His hand letting go of Shadow's cheek. His hand instead grabbed Shadow's, their fingers interlacing. Shadow's hand immediately caught fire. Their hands seemed to fit so perfectly together. Everytime Sonic would rub his thumb over his index finger his hand would get even hotter. Shadow wondered how it hadn't melted off.
“I know I probably shouldn't like you, but I do. I've lived my whole life struggling to find someone who could catch up to me. I always had to go slower and that just never worked out. But with you I don't have to slow down. I can just be myself. I don't know, maybe I'll have to catch up to you one day. But today, I don't. And that’s what matters. Pretty stupid huh?” Sonic looked down, releasing his grip on Shadow’s hand.
“No Sonic, it was beautiful.” Shadow gripped Sonic's hand tightly; not daring to let go. He brought it up to his lips and pressed a long, soft kiss. Ruby eyes never leaving emerald.
Sonic tugged Shadow's collar and brought peach lips to tan. The kiss was soft leaving sparks in Shadow's chest. Shadow let go of Sonic's hand to find his hips and bring him in closer. Sonic's arms found Shadow's neck. Shadow licked Sonic's bottom lip asking for access. Sonic pulled away.
“Woah woah ask a guy out on a date first.” Sonic smirked as he held his hands up. Shadow in response growled and tightened his grip on Sonic's hips.
“You really are clingy huh?” Sonic tilted his head to one side. With that Shadow let go of Sonic and turned to grab his backpack off the counter.
“Hey wait Shadow. Oh c'mon one comment and your off really?” Sonic crossed his arms.
“Insufferable really. I was supposed to lock up the shop about 30 minutes ago and unless you want to be locked in here until morning then I wouldn't stay.” Shadow smirked as he tilted his head to the side. Sonic was out the door in a flash and Shadow locked up in half of that time.
“Wanna go on a run?” Sonic smirked as his eyes followed Shadow's every move. Shadow put his backpack down on his motorcycle. Then he ran leaving a streak of orange light behind him.
“CHEATER!” Sonic screamed before he took off.
They ran side by side not taking time to admire the scenery. They tripped eachother, pushed eachother, and did anything they could so only one could win. They ended up tackling eachother on a hill by the sea. Both hedgehogs were laughing. Enjoying eachother's company.
“Best first date ever,” Sonic laughed and held his stomach. Shadow laughed harder finally immersing himself in the moment. Sonic stopped and started at the ebony hedgehog.
“Wow, your laugh, it's-”
“Are you making fun of my laugh now?” Shadow wiped a tear from his eye.
“Beautiful.” Sonic left a small kiss on Shadow's cheek. The latter looked away feeling his face heat up.
“I can be here forever. You know, just you and me.” Sonic smiled as he put his head on Shadow's lap.
“Me too Sonic me too.” Shadow combed his fingers through cobalt quills and stared at the stars above.
“You know the sun kind of reminds me of you. You always pay so much attention to it. It's endearing really.” Sonic nuzzled into Shadow.
“Whatever.” Shadow looked down to see a cobalt hedgehog with the most shit eating grin on his face he had ever seen. “You're Insufferable. I might be backing out of this already.”
“Oh c'mon we went on a run where we tried to kill each other yet my comment is the deal breaker?” Sonic rolled his eyes.
“About that. If you can run at the speed of sound, why did you need me to give you a ride that day at the picnic?” Shadow tilted his head to the side as he looked down at the cobalt hedgehog.
“Oh well uh just wanted to hang out with you I guess.” Sonic looked away. “Or be closer to you who knows?”
Shadow laughed at that.
“You really did all that just so you could be that close to me wow.” Shadow shook his head.
“Oh c'mon can't blame a guy for having a crush on someone.” Sonic crossed his arms. Both hedgehogs stayed quiet for a moment; taking in the scenery.
“What about a planetarium? I can text you the details about one that's close by.” Shadow broke the silence first.
“For what a date?” Sonic ears perked up. Shadow stayed quiet. “Shadow, are you asking me out on a date?”
“Well I was until you made it awkward.” Shadow looked away. Sonic chuckled.
“Well I accept.” Sonic kissed Shadow's chin.
After Shadow drove Sonic home they both stayed outside for a few minutes. Not to talk, just to be with each other.
“I have something for you.” Shadow grabbed his backpack and pulled out a plastic bag with a Mean Bean logo. He pulled out two tumblers. One cobalt blue with green hearts and another black with red hearts. “I thought you could keep one and I could keep the other one. You know, like a matching set.”
Shadow handed Sonic the blue tumbler before Sonic pushed it back.
“No. I want the one that looks like you.” Sonic grabbed it and held it close.
“I'll see you tomorrow, Shads.”
“See you tomorrow Sonic.”
Shadow leaned in and pressed a small kiss to Sonic’s lips.
