Chapter Text

He could try to steer it away, but it was too late to reverse what had been done. His ship would go down, his friends would go down, and he would go down and there was nothing Mort could do to stop it.

“Mort?” Julien asked. Any anger he had carried was gone by now and he was no longer shouting, it had been replaced by the slow acceptance of his grim but ultimate death. He wasn’t annoyed or angry, and he didn’t even have the energy to blame Mort for what was happening anymore. He had gotten all his screaming out moments earlier and now there was nothing left but the knowledge that this was what his life had amounted to. He would die in a ship with his body guards and a freakish mouse lemur, it was humiliating.

Clover wasn’t trying to fight it either, she just stared solemnly at Mort waiting for him to confirm what they all already knew. She looked lost, her whole life she’d fought to keep Julien safe and now his life was just out of grasp, they would die at the same time in the same way and all she worked for was for nothing. Her death, and her life, would be insignificant.

“Yes, Captain, the Titanic’s going down.” Mort’s voice was squeakier than usual, it was clear he was trying not to cry. He knew he’d survive this, but he dreaded being the only one to. He also knew that it would take a while to get back to land once he sank, and even when he got back he’d have to start his life again.

The faint screams of the passengers could be heard from the deck as they scrambled into whatever life boats they could find. This was it and everyone knew it, they were just trying to survive.

Mort looked out of the window of the wheel house one last time. He would see the sky again, but this was the last time it would look beautiful, he thought.

The water slowly submerged the ship. The outside screams had died down and they all decided to believe it was because everyone had already gotten off the ship to the life boats and survived.

The doors and windows were tightly shut and the water wasn’t getting into the wheel house soon. They a minescule amount of time.

“It was an honor serving you, King Julien,” Clocer informed him, saluting.

“No no no, don’t say that! We can make it out!” Mort cried. He dramatically grasped onto her leg and shook at it, though it remained unmoving.

“You know we can’t, Mort,” she told him. She was right about him knowing, but he still shook his head and frowned, as if disagreeing with the inevitable truth.

Julien nodded and dramatically fell onto the floor.

“I will miss you guys in heaven,” he sighed.

The other two murmured in agreement before realizing what he said and countering him.

“Julien, you know we’re going to heaven too?” Clover asked. She didn’t have enough in her to be exasperated, or even really annoyed, so her voice came out more monotoned.

“Ooh! I want to go to heaven! Can I come?” Mort asked, he perked up a bit at the mention of it.

“Eventually… maybe,” Clover attempted to assure him.
