Chapter 6: First fight

Chapter Text

— Tsukki, you can lie to anyone you want, but I can feel that you don’t really want him to leave. And I don’t think it’s just because you’re curious about what’s going to happen to him here, — Kei tensed, staring at his friend.

— I hate that you can sense this kind of stuff. Still can’t figure out how and what exactly, — Tadashi smirked, trying to suppress a grin. Though his friend was smarter than most, he wouldn’t be fooled.

— I don’t really understand it myself. So, what are you going to do, Tsukki? — he raised a questioning eyebrow.

— Nothing. I’ll just watch.

— You never change, huh, — Yamaguchi smiled.

— And you?

— This might sound weird, but for now, nothing. Although his blood smells really good, — Kei scoffed at those words.

— Surprising that you’d like even the basic scent of a human.

Yamaguchi clicked his tongue at his friend’s remark, though it was true. He’d been living on animal blood for a while, but the scent of some random kid had drawn him in.

— Anyway, I got what I wanted to know. Later.

— Not even a “good night”? — Yamaguchi smiled as Kei turned to leave but was stopped by loud voices from the hall.

Both of them stepped out to see what was going on.

In the hall stood an absolutely furious Kageyama and a slightly nervous Shoyo.

— How did they even let someone like him into our academy?

Shoyo frowned, not understanding what all the fuss was about; so he accidentally spilled coffee on him—big deal.

— Yo, King, why so angry? — Noya, who had also come out due to the noise, was the first to take Hinata’s side.

— No one dragged you into this, — as was often said, the higher a vampire alpha’s status, the bigger the trouble. Noya stepped back a couple of steps, breathing heavily, almost collapsing, but Daichi caught him.

It seemed like the entire hall had gathered by now.

— Kageyama, calm down.

— You started this over coffee, seriously? — Shoyo couldn’t understand why things had to get so complicated; he’d apologized, but this idiot wouldn’t stop.

Noya coughed and stood up slightly, though honestly, he was scared.

Shoyo bit his lip, watching as others suffered because of him.

Kageyama clicked his tongue and, turning sharply, stormed off to his room.

— Noya-san, are you okay? — Shoyo immediately approached him.

— I’m fine. That idiot can be intense, — he sighed, looking at the newcomer.

Shoyo really did look flustered, and for some reason, it warmed something deep inside the vampire.

— A lot has happened in just one day, — Daichi sighed, saying it aloud as he still hadn’t fully adjusted to having a human on their team, let alone Kageyama starting drama with suffocating threats.

— Hey, Hinata, don’t look like he broke something in me. I’m fine, really, don’t worry.

Noya smiled and ruffled the boy’s hair. Shoyo muttered something incomprehensible, though a clear “thank you” could be heard.

People started to disperse to their rooms.

Hinata didn’t wait long and immediately headed to his own.

Entering his room, he closed the door, leaned his back against the wall, and covered his face with his hands.

“What’s with this place? Why is everything so strange? Not a single omega, and these alphas are just too weird.”

After sitting on the bed for a while, he realized he wasn’t sleepy at all. Not that he could sleep under these circumstances.

Grabbing his phone and dressing warmly, he left his room. The hall and kitchen were empty.

As he walked towards the academy exit, he didn’t encounter anyone either, which was a relief.

Finally stepping outside, he immediately dialed his mother’s number.

— Shoyo, I thought you’d be asleep by now, — her quiet, calm, and familiar laugh came from the other end.

Shoyo smiled.

For the next half-hour, he told her about his day, carefully omitting the fact that he seemed to be the only omega there. Worrying his mother wasn’t the best idea.

— And what about the team? Did they accept you? — Shoyo paused for a moment, thinking about what to say.

— Well, it’s just the first day. Not everyone yet, but yeah. Everything’s fine, Mom.

She sighed and asked him to be careful.

Shoyo said he’d try, and after saying goodbye, hung up.

The sudden silence was overwhelming. He stood not far from the academy, where the lights were still on.

Returning, he was once again relieved not to encounter anyone.

Entering the dorm, he found a bespectacled guy in the kitchen, reading something. The dim light made his appearance even more unsettling.

When the guy noticed him, he put the book down and stared at the human.

— Where have you been? — Shoyo flinched at the sudden voice, nearly choking.

The boy looked at Kei, who was standing calmly by the table, watching him.

— What kind of question is that? It’s not like going out at night is forbidden.

Tsukishima narrowed his eyes.

— No, I just thought you might’ve run away, — he smirked at the last words, making Shoyo tense up.

— I’m not going to run away just because of some idiot like Kageyama.

Tsukishima scoffed and stepped away from the table, moving closer to Hinata.

The latter tensed even more, unsure what the tall guy wanted from him.

— Maybe you’re not running now, but what will you do next? — with each word, the boy’s tone grew quieter. Shoyo gulped, feeling even more confused, his hands beginning to tremble slightly.

— Am I interrupting something? — someone suddenly turned on the light. Kei hissed, while Shoyo covered his eyes.

Both turned to see Yamaguchi standing there.

To his own surprise, Shoyo blushed and quickly left for his room without saying anything.

— Ugh, I almost managed to scare him, — Kei muttered, returning to the table to pick up his book.

— That looked more like flirting than scaring, Tsukki.

— Shut up, Yamaguchi.

Tadashi chuckled, understanding his friend’s irritation.

— What are you guys doing up so late?

A somewhat sleepy Tanaka walked into the kitchen.

— Everyone’s flocking to the kitchen at night like moths, — Tsukishima clicked his tongue, closed his book, and left for his room.

— He’s the one who sits here for hours at night, — Yamaguchi muttered, yelping and jumping when a sudden voice startled him.

Standing behind him were Suga and Daichi.

— Everyone really does come out of their dens at night, huh, — from another side, Noya appeared, disheveled and wearing just pants.

— What’s with the midnight gathering? — the least expected visitor appeared—Kageyama. Not because he rarely came out at night, but because of the incident a few hours ago.

— Oh, look who’s here.

— Tsk, it got too hot in my room. And, uh, Noya, apologize.

Everyone stared at him in surprise. He didn’t understand why they were looking at him like that. Yamaguchi’s mouth even hung open in shock.

— What? — Kageyama looked at everyone, confused.

— Same question. Did you maybe say something wrong?

— Oh, right. Yeah, sorry. Anyway, I’m going back. Goodnight, everyone, — without waiting for a response, he turned and disappeared into his room.

— Well, that’s not surprising. It’s Kageyama, after all, — Daichi chuckled at Suga’s words but agreed.

— Pfft, I thought I’d have to apologize for him almost choking me.

They chatted for a while before heading to their rooms. After all, tomorrow would be a long day.
