Chapter 1: L is for late
Chapter Text
Caitlyn's period was very consistent. It was enviable to any period haver that caught wind, three days of bleeding every thirty-one days. It was the way it had always been.
At the start of every year she'd go through her calendar and put a red cross at the beginning and end of each period she knew she ought to have. This month was to be no different, placing a towel on the bed alongside some pain killers and water on her side table as she often woke in the middle of the night with cramps. She slipped a pad on after her shower, joined vi in their bed, kissing her goodnight and drifting asleep.
The cramps she had expected were replaced by a horrific feeling of nausea, resulting in Cait having to fly out of bed to make it to the bathroom in time to throw up what she had eaten for dinner.
The light turned on, revealing a concerned half asleep vi.
“Not feeling too well, cupcake?”
Cait stared back. Before she could spit out a retort, she threw up again.
“Awe shit”
Vi rushed down to hold back Caits soft blue hair,
“You're alright Cait, get it out”
Sliding down next to her, Vi placed her hand on Cait’s forehead.
“Hmm, you don't seem to have a temperature. Did you eat anything new or different?”
“Not that I can recall”
Cait replied in a weak voice. Her eyes started to swell with tears.
“Hey, you're going to be ok”
Wiping the tears from her face before quickly grabbing the glass of water Cait left on her nightstand.
Cait washed her mouth out and leaned against Vi.
“Do you feel better?”
“I guess, I don’t believe there's anything left in my stomach”
She joked, causing Vi to giggle as she hugged Cait from behind.
“Hop back into bed, I’ll find you a bucket and get you some more water”
Vi gently kissed her forehead before helping Cait into their bed. Already fast asleep by the time Vi returned.
The sound of Caits alarm was abruptly stopped as she slammed her hand into the stop button.
“OW”
She hissed, grabbing and throwing the small clock to the other side of the room. The glass shattering as it hit the wall startled Vi, who usually sleeps through Caits' early alarms.
“What the fuck was that?”
Cait slammed her head back into her pillow, responding to Vi's question with muffled tears.
“Hey hey hey, what’s up? Do you need a heat pack or anything?”
Vi asked gently, expecting this sudden outburst to have some association with Caitlyn's period.
“I- I don’t know..”
Caitlyn turned her head to meet Vi’s concerned eyes. Wrapping her arms around the muscular woman, slowing her breathing to match the rise and fall of Vi’s chest.
Their cozy moment together was interrupted by Cait quickly rolling over and throwing up whatever remained in her stomach into the bucket Vi had left her. Her long hair again being held up by her girlfriend.
Slumping back down into bed, she looked up at Vi, who was now up on her knees, leaning over to brush away the hair from Cait's face.
“I’m gonna grab you some water, do you need anything else?”
Cait shook her head. Vi gave her a quick kiss on the forehead before grabbing the cup to refill and the bucket she now needed to empty.
Cait stared at the roof for a bit before remembering her period was due today. Hauling herself out of the warm bed, she dawdled over to the bathroom. Grabbing a pad from their shared box before slumping down onto the toilet. Still half asleep and slightly nauseous, she carefully pulled down her underwear, preparing for the blood she was about to see. But there was nothing. Left exactly the same as when she had put it on last night.
“Huh”
She sat and stared for a couple moments before she heard Vi knock on the door.
“Hey my love, you alright in there?”
“Vi, I need you to check my calendar for me-”
“Its shark week what about-”
“That's the problem, I didn't get my period”
There was a moment of silence before anyone said anything.
“Uhhh did you do the math right? I know you do the entire calendar at the start of the year. You could have made a mistake?” Although Vi knew it wasn't like Caitlyn to make a mistake like this.
Caitlyn quickly finished up in the bathroom, marching over to the calendar and checking over her calculations.
“It should be today. Everything here lines up. It always comes every 30 days”
Cait Bemoaned as she placed the calendar back on the wall.
“It could just be late? I know it's never done that, but it's still a possibility-”
Vi had barely finished her sentence before she realised tears were dripping from Caits' face again.
“Hey cupcake, no need to cry, there's nothing to worry about. Mines always inconsistent, but it still turns up eventually, let's go get you some breakfast, your stomach probably has nothing in it”.
They traveled down the hallway into the kitchen together, Cait tightly holding onto Vi. The couple had moved out into their own place about a month ago, a simple apartment that sat between Plitover and Zaun. The sun beamed from the kitchen windows as it rose above the city. Caitlyn sat on a stool at the kitchen bench, embracing the golden rays of warm sun.
“Eat up love,”
Vi said, snapping Cait back into reality as she slid a plate of jam toast in front of her.
Cait sat and pondered about her day as she nibbled on her toast. She rarely schedules things the days she has her period, preferring to cuddle up next to Vi as she reads a good book to pass the time. Despite Vi's re-assurance that there was nothing to worry about in regards to her period, she was tempted to schedule an appointment with her doctor just to make sure everything was ok, it couldn't hurt right?
“You should wait a day before you see a doc Cait”
“Huh?” said whipping her head to look at Vi.
“It is weird your period hasn't come yet, but you should give it a day before you see someone, because i know that's exactly what you were thinking”
Vi was right.
“I’ll call and book for tomorrow afternoon then”
“Sounds like a plan”
Vi said, collecting the empty plates to wash up.
Caitlyn walked back into their bedroom to get ready for the day, there were a couple groceries they needed for dinner tonight. After selecting her outfit she went to pop on a bra. Unable to hook the clips in she Called out for Vi’s help.
“You sure this isn't like an old bra? It seems tight” Vi said as she forced it to clip.
“I swear I bought this like a month ago” Cait grunted, It was remarkably tighter than she remembered.
“Actually, can you take it off it really hurts”
“What can I say, I love taking your bra off,” Vi chuckled.
“God, I knew you were going to say that”, Cait said as she put the bra back.
Cait stared daggers at Vi awaiting her next sentence.
“But I love your Kirramountains,” Vi said, pouting.
Cait rolled her eyes,
“you absolute dork”
Vi waltzed over to where Cait was now standing
“You love me for it tho”
Cait grabbed Vi’s collar and pulled her in close, letting vi’s weight push her against the wall she was standing by as their lips met. Vis hands traveled up Caits bare torso each one grabbing onto a tit. Vi played with them before giving them a gentle squeeze.
“Shit” Cait huffed.
Vi took a step back
“Fuck did I do something wrong?” Vi asked with concern.
“My boobs are just sore, not sure from what though, that bra was on for five seconds,” Cait exclaimed.
“I’m pretty sure that's a period symptom cupcake. Did you want to continue? I can let you get ready-”
Vi was again yanked by the shirt to Caitlyn's lips.
“Just be gentle, please,” Cait said between kisses.
“Of course cupcake”
Caitlyn went to the bathroom throughout the day, each visit presenting no blood whatsoever and a growing pit of dread in her stomach. Vi had visited Ekko, opting to grab groceries so that Cait could rest. Cait knew she should have listened to Vi, but something felt wrong. Something was off. She phoned up the doctor's office, hoping they had a cancellation she could go to.
“We have an open spot in about 15 minutes if you can make it?”
A rush of relief washed over Caitlyn
“I’ll be there”
The doctor's office wasn't too far away, about a 5-10-minute walk. She was only weary that she was going to run into Vi, it's not like Vi would be mad about her going today, it's just she really needed to get this off her mind. Vi would understand.
Cait checked into the doctor's office, grabbing a cup of water before she sat down. She only got a couple sips of water before her name was called.
“Caitlyn Kirraman?”
She could feel the rest of the waiting room staring at her, that's what a powerful last name will get you.
She swiftly followed the doctor back to her office. Taking a seat on the medical bed.
“So what brings you in today Caitlyn?”
The doctor asks with a smile.
“This is going to sound really silly”
Cait pauses to take a breath.
“My whole life I've had a very consistent period, every thirty days since i was fourteen, but I didn't get it today, which i know it could be late but i'm just paranoid something is wrong.”
Caitlyn paused again, lifting her head to look at the doctor.
“Lets go through the usual questions, are you sexually active and if so, do you use protection?”
Caitlyn's cheeks flushed a little.
“Uh neither my girlfriend nor I use protection mam”
“No chance you could be pregnant?”
Caitlyn laughed at the question. It seemed silly to her, even sillier than her paranoia.
“I’ll get you to do a blood test and a urine sample for me,”
The doctor said as she handed over a small yellow cup.
“The bathroom is to the left. I'll draw your blood tomorrow as I’ll need you too fast”
Cait nodded as she grabbed the cup.
“Once you finish, come right back”
This is ridiculous, Cait thought to herself. She wasn't dumb; she knew what the sample was for. But it was better to do it just so it could be ticked off. Again she sat down, still no sign of blood on her pad. She unscrewed the cup and did her business..
Her assumptions stood corrected when she saw the pink stick sitting on the table. She handed over the sample and sat down. She watched the doctor place the stick in the cup, letting it soak for a couple seconds, before removing it and sticking the cap on.. She placed down the test as she placed the sample cup in a bag, before sanitising the area and removing her gloves.
“While we wait on that, I’ll fill out the paperwork for your blood work tomorrow.”
Caitlyn grabs the water cup she left on the doctor's table, about to take a sip, when the doctor freezes. She grabs the test and slowly turns to Caitlyn.
The room is silent.
“Caitlyn, you're pregnant.”
“WHAT?” Caitlyn yells, dropping her cup of water.
“No there has to be a mistake, I’ve never been active with a man, please do another test, it's wrong, it has to be!” Cait chokes out as tears stream down her face.
What in the ever-loving fuck was she going to do?

Chapter Text
Four pregnancy tests sat on the doctor's bench. The pink lines stared at Cait. There was no denial or mistake. She was pregnant. Fear was the dominant emotion consuming her, alongside confusion. Her only sexual partner within her most recent ovulation was Vi, and Vi didn't have a …
“I need to see my next patient, but I'll hand you these for the meantime while you figure out what the next steps are for you and the fetus”. Gently passing over the collection of pamphlets with a reassuring smile.
“It's going to be ok, there are options for you”
The doctor's words hung in the air.
All Cait could muster up was a quiet “Thanks” under her breath.
The papers were shoved into her purse before she stepped out of the room. If anyone saw even a glimpse, she knew some amalgamation of rumours and theories would spread like wildfire. That was the last thing she needed.
The walk home dragged as Caits' mind was intoxicated by not only the prognosis, but the biology. This was simple science, right? A key part of the insemination process was missing, yet here she was, confused and pregnant.
“What if Vi thinks I was unfaithful?”
The thought sends a shiver down her spine. Cait's state being fueled by overbearing emotions rather than logic. Nothing Vi had ever said or done perpetuated the feeling that she would react badly to this news, yet anxiety engulfed the woman.
Caits steps stopped as she reached the door, the joyous memories of the couple picking the house together not so long ago flooded into Caits mind. The way Cait laughed at Vi as she made outlandish suggestions about how they'd decorate.
“What if we had gargoyles, but instead of the dog looking things we had…uhhh…cupcakes!”
Vi announced as she pointed to the columns in front of the house.
Caitlyn stood at the doorstep, staring at the door, trying to prepare a sentence of some sorts for this conversation. But the words of the world dissolved into the creases of her brain, leaving her completely blank.
Twisting the door handle, eyes glued to the floor as she entered the house. She heard Vi's quick footsteps approach, pausing before fully reaching her.
“Cait?”
Caitlyn crumpled into a ball onto the floor with Vi catching her. Cait held on to Vi as if it was the end of the world as she cried. Tears and snot ran down her face and onto Vi’s shoulder. Unsure of what had just happened, Vi sat and held onto Cait, soothing and reassuring her until she was ready to talk.
“Cait” Vi’s gentle voice filled Caits chest with warmth.
“You don't have to tell me anything right now, I just want to know that you're ok”
Vi’s words make Cait squeeze her lover harder.
“I don’t know how to say this. I barely believe it myself,” Cait laughed, tears still streaming down her face.
“I’m… fuck- Vi I'm pregnant”
Caitlyn lifted her head, allowing her teary eyes to meet Vi’s gaze, meeting her wide grey eyes. Vi’s lips parted to say something, hesitating before replying to Caits' news.
“I, uh- ok”
Vi took a breath, wiping the tears and hair from Cait’s face.
“Hey this is probably really scary, but we will get through this together. I am the dirt under your fingernails, and we will figure this out. Together.” Vi placed a delicate kiss on Caits forehead.
“It doesn't make any sense, how? I promise I’ve only been with you and-”
“Cupcake, I don’t doubt your loyalty, especially for a man. I saw firsthand the way you looked away from only the men when I took you to that brothel,” Vi chuckled.
“Shut up,” Cait replied jokingly, pushing Vi’s face away.
“We are going to figure this out together. Biology aside, we are going to be parents!” Vi exclaimed before pausing.
“But that's only if you want to. It's still your body. If you decide to keep it or not, it's up to you, and I'll be here for you, whichever path we go down together.”
“I’m not sure yet”
“And you don’t have to be. It's a lot to take in cupcake, c'mon let's get you sitting somewhere. That isn't the entry mat” The pair giggled as they walked into the bedroom.
Cait broke free from Vi’s arms the moment she caught sight of her calendar.
“14 days from then is… Vi wasn’t that our first night here?” Caitlyn turned to look at Vi, her finger glued to the calendar.
“Uh yeah, I think so? What's the matter?” Vi said as she moved towards Cait.
“That was during ovulation. That would have been when I got pregnant,” Cait replied as her finger circled around the three days.
A smirk grew on Vi’s face.
“Yeah, I fucked you into the mattress those two days-”
Before Caitlyn could cut her off with a rebuttal Vi had already jumped over the bed, grabbing a box from under it.
“Vi what on Runtera-”
Vi’s face dropped as she read the piece of paper she grabbed from the box.
“Hey remember that present I bought for us as a housewarming gift” Vi didn't look up from the paper.
“The strap?” Caitlyn queried.
“Remember how I said the salesperson was really weird and emphasised how magic the experience would be for the both of us, and like magic in general?”
“ARE YOU ONLY NOW READING THE USER GUIDE?”
“I KNOW HOW TO USE A STRAP, SO DO YOU”
“YOU DIDN'T THINK TO READ ABOUT THE MAGIC STRAP?”
“I THOUGHT SHE WAS JUST BEING A REALLY GOOD MARKETER”
“VI ITS CALLED THE HEXSTRAP, WITH HEXTECH?”
“Ok, so maybe I didn't put two and two together, but at least we know it's mine?” Vi let out with a sheepish smile.
“I can't believe you got me pregnant with the fucking magical hex strap”
“And I can't believe I'll have to buy condoms if we use it again”
A pillow met Vi’s face.
“Is that seriously the only thing that's going through your head?” Cait joked.
“You got me pregnant for fuck's sake, I'm going to have our kid, and all your filthy mind can think of is the next time we fuck each other” Caitlyn was laughing at this point.
Vi froze. “Wait, you're going to have it?”
“I mean, as long as you want it to-”
Vi had jumped over the bed and lifted up her wife, spinning them in a circle
“I'M GOING TO BE A MUM”
“VI PUT ME DOWN THIS INSTANCE”
Vi carefully placed Caits' feet back onto the floor.
“Were going to be mums” Now it was Vi’s turn to tear up as they held each other in a tight embrace, breaking free to lean down and kiss Caits stomach.

Chapter Text
Ekko and Vi’s catch ups had become a weekly affair. The pair had become each other's rocks as they healed after the death of Jinx. It had been a long and excruciating path for the both of them, each of them drawing in guilt and remorse. Although they each carried the burden of their regrets, acceptance over their shared loss grew, bit by bit. Healing after the war also meant healing the community, which both Cait and Vi partook in.
Vi offered to come down once a week to teach a fitness class to the children. An idea sprung on by Cait as they both noticed the way the children looked up to them. Especially Vi, the under-city girl who helped win the war with her fighting. She had become a staple bed-time story, according to Ekko.
After the war, Vi put down her gauntlets and allowed herself to truly heal, not needing to punch her way through life to protect those she loved. It took her months before she could even look at the punching bag that hung from the home gym Caitlyn had made. Vi’s mindset surrounding fighting needed to change, being able to sit with Cait and just talk about the ways her childhood, prison, her life had all compiled into this mindset of protection ignited her healing. Although many of the children were upset, Vi wouldn't teach them how to fight like a hero. It was more important for Vi to heal her internal relationship with violence while ensuring her students did the same. Vi had opted to teach fitness that occasionally included a punch sequence, but only when her students could understand that the path of violence, even when done out of the good of one's heart, can consume you. Fight for yourself and your family, but don't rely on violence. Especially now the ways of life within the cities had changed.
Vi was firm but kind with her students, always bringing a treat for them to share after their lessons. Watching as each student progressed, growing confidence in themselves filled Vi’s chest with warmth. Vi’s classes weren't just about being fit, they were about how strength can be shown in many ways. Sometimes the strongest thing you can do is ask for help. The world is a big scary place, but there will always be someone in your corner prepared to help. You just need to ask.
Vi insisted that she would stay home with Cait. Pregnancy was new territory for the both of them, and Vi wanted to be there in case Caitlyn needed absolutely anything.
“Vi, you know the kids will be devastated if you aren't there”
“But I have to care for my kid and my beautiful wife,” Vi chuckled.
“Vi, it's barely the size of a bean, plus teaching the kids is good practice. You could probably talk to Ekko about raising kids too. I know his helped with all the kids in the sanctuary”
“Are you sure you'll be ok, you and our little bean?”
“The bean and I will be fine darling, now hurry up before you are late”
Vi quickly kissed Cait goodbye, making sure to kiss the her stomach as well before she hurried out the door.
“Alright, that's the end of our class! Enjoy the cookies Cait made you!” Vi waited for the kids to run off before she sat down to eat her cookie.
“Those kids absolutely adore you,” Ekko smiled as he leaned against the wall behind Vi.
Vi opened her mouth to say something, but paused.
“Do you think I’d be a good parent?” Vi turned her head to look up at Ekko, being met with a face scrunched up in confusion.
“That was out of nowhere, but the answer is yes. Just look at the way the kids light up when they see you.”
A smile crawled across Vi's face.
Vi stood up and joined Ekko at the wall.
“How many of the rascals did you help raise?”
“I've known about half since birth, and the rest at various ages, but with how close this community is I’d say I’ve helped raise all of em,” Ekko chuckled as he looked to the playground which was now full of Vi’s students.
“So, would you help me with mine, little man?”
“Duh- wait, why are you asking me this?” Vi could see the dots connecting in his brain.
“Cait’s pregnant” Vi waited for his response.
Ekkos' expression looked as if he was trying to solve some complicated equation.
“Wait what? When? How?”
“Lower your voice a bit. We don't want the whole of Piltover to know just yet,” Vi said as she jokingly punched his shoulder.
“Cait’s about four weeks along, and we found out yesterday,” Vi said, avoiding the third question.
“That doesn't explain to me how Vi”
Ekkos' curiosity had gotten the better of him.
Vi knew in her subconscious this was going to be a part of the deal when telling people her wife was pregnant, but it didn't deviate from the embarrassment.
“I didn't know I could get her pregnant with the hex strap” Vi’s face flushed to match her hair colour as she placed her hand behind her neck.
“There's no way it didn't say that on the packaging or like on it”
“Well, neither of us read it. We were simply eager to use it-”
“Vi, I didn't need the last part,” Ekko giggled.
The pair laughed together for a moment. Before Ekko questioned Vi.
“So what's the plan? I’m assuming since you found out yesterday, you won’t have anything.”
“Cait was hoping that you could help us, since you've got more experience in this area than we do”
“Wow, no pressure then,” Ekko continued laughing.
“Cmon, we should go visit Muma then”
Vi didn't question, following him to a small cottage-like place that sat under a large oak tree.
Stone bricks framed the curved windows. Inside sat a row of cots with a small child placed in each. The wall behind displayed a beautiful painting of an enchanted forest. Vi admired the house as Ekko knocked on the door.
A round old woman opened the door, a baby slept cozily in her arms.
“Oh Ekko, my darling, it is so wonderful to see you!” Her voice was soft but enthusiastic.
“Oh my, hello Vi, I’ve heard many a tale about you!, these kids just can't seem to stop chattering about your classes! You must come in. Would you like a drink or snack of any kind?”
The house was warm. The mural she saw through the window extended along the back wall of the entire nursery. Flowers and fairies and other mystical beings sat across the landscape. The pair plopped themselves on the couch, colourful patchwork overtook the original brown fabric.
“Now, what has brought you two along?” She said, carefully placing the sleeping baby into an empty cot.
Silence filled the room for a minute until Ekko nudged Vi.
“Hey- Oh uh, I found out yesterday my wife is pregnant, and that I’m going to be a mother,” Vi’s voice was low, paranoid she would wake a child.
“Oh, how wonderful Vi! This is exciting news! But I do understand how scary it must seem. Let me go grab some things for you”
Muma quickly returned with a basket of things.
We make all the new parents round here a bubba basket. You'll still have to go out and get some things, but here are the basics. Everything comes with detailed instructions for you and your wife”
“Make sure you read the instructions this time, Vi,” Ekko joked before being lovingly shoved by Vi.
“Thank you so much, Muma,” Vi said as she admired the bundle of gifts.
“If you or your wife, Cait, wasn't it? Need absolutely anything, I'll be right down here.”
Muma passed the basket to Vi, who accepted it with a large smile.
“Hope to see you two soon. Take care! And extend my congratulations to Cait!”
“We will,” Vi and Ekko said in unison as they left the house.
Vi’s cheeks flushed as she noticed the excited looks she was getting as the firelights noticed what she was holding.
“IS MRS VI PREGNANT” A yell came from the playground as a horde of Vi’s students came squabbling towards her.
Laughing at the enthusiastic and curious students, Vi replied,
“You all have to keep it a secret, okay?”
Vi crouched down to their level
“But my wife is pregnant”
She knew the children would absolutely not be able to keep the secret. Lucky Cait had already given her permission to tell the students, and inevitably, the entirety of the firelights.
A collection of excited squeals left the group of students. Vi sent them back to what they were doing, as Ekko and her had some shopping to do.
<3 <3 <3
Caitlyn sat and read the scrunched pregnancy pamphlets the doctor had given her.
Your pregnancy, week by week
“So little bean you’ve got 200 cells and the basics developing” Cait had heard that babies can recognise their mother's voices, so she had started making an effort to talk to it, even if it was currently just a collection of cells.
We recommend new parents join an antenatal class to prepare for all steps of pregnancy
“Gosh, you're making me go back to school, bean? You're lucky your mother and I enjoy learning”
Cait flipped through the collection of pamphlets, recycling the ones on ending her pregnancy. She grabbed a notepad and pen to write out a to-do list based on the pamphlets.
To do
Book appointment with doctor
Find an antenatal class
Tell dad
She set the pen down to the side of the page.
Caitlyn and Vi had dinner with her father at least once a month, their dinner this month being at the end of the week. Caitlyn started thinking of how she would tell her father when her train of thought was cut off by Vi and Ekko at the door.
Walking towards the front door, she was met with Vi holding a basket with a giddy smile on her face.
“Look what I got for bean!”
Behind her stood Ekko, struggling to carry a large box
“Hi Cait” his voice was full of struggle as he wobbled with the box.
“Let me help-”
“Cait, careful you have a baby in your stomach”
“I know Vi, it says in the information the doctor says that I should be ok lifting for now”
She pulled Vi into a kiss
“I’m fine Vi, you don’t have to worry”
“I'm NOT”
Ekko called from behind
The trio sat on the lounge in front of the assortment of new items.
“Vi, we won't be needing a cot for months, you know”
“Well, I just wanted us to be prepared. What if Piltover has a cot shortage when you give birth?”
Ekko left after dinner, leaving the couple to go through their new things together. Making sure they read every set of instructions and information carefully.
“AWWW look how small the toothbrush is!” Vi held it to her face with a pout.
Most of the items in the basket were handmade and hand-me-downs, each blanket, play mat and baby wrap sewn with love.
“I think my parents kept most of my baby stuff, so before you go on another spree we should ask my father”
“Oh, he's going to be ecstatic when we tell him,” Vi chuckled.
“Definitely,” Cait replied before giving Vi a tight hug.
