Chapter Text

Peace talks were going surprisingly well up until the Senju elders decided an arranged marriage would be a major sticking point in their cease-fire negotiations. The moment the demand is brought up the entire Uchiha delegation freezes and glances at one another quickly before Madara smiles tightly and politely but firmly refuses.

“We do not believe in arranged marriages.” Izuna sneers when the Senju push the matter. “We marry for love or not at all.”

The Senju all appear stunned at the declaration. Hashirama cannot contain the startled laugh that bursts out of him but it is swiftly cut short when Tobirama harshly pinches his brother under the table. Hashirama quickly recomposes himself and smiles awkwardly at the Uchiha.

“Surely there have been exceptions?” Hashirama tries and Tobirama slowly closes his eyes to curb the urge to roll them.

“You would ask us to condemn one of our kin to a loveless marriage?” Izuna snarls and Hashirama’s smile turns into a grimace.

“Of course not!” he quickly insists “but there have been marriages between you and your allied clans, did those all begin as love matches?”

Once again the Uchiha quickly glance at one another and Izuna has nothing to say for once. Instead, it is Madara who hesitantly speaks up.

“No,” Madara slowly confesses, “but there is a period of courtship to establish that love is possible.”

“A courtship period is very reasonable!” Hashirama agrees “We have several potential candidates…” Hashirama hesitantly trails off as Madra raises a hand to stop him.

“There is also the matter that the Uchiha and our allied clans share very similar…traditions” Madara carefully chooses his words and Tobirama takes note of the very subtle but smirks and glances amongst the Uchiha delegation.

“Traditions?” Hashirama repeats and Madara nods. Tobirama could almost swear the man had a slight blush on his face.

“We would of course make every effort to be respectful of your traditions,” Tobirama assures them, Madara looks doubtful.

“Our traditions are often seen as … peculiar to outclans,” Madara continues wryly “We do not wish to offend but also we will not tolerate offense to our way of life.

Tobirama is mystified and deadly curious about what traditions would have the Uchiha so adamantly against an arranged marriage, convinced that they would offend.

“I’m sure we can all be respectful of each other's traditions,” Hashirama begins but is interrupted by Izuna’s scoff.

“I highly doubt you Senju prudes would be very receptive to our rather public -”

“Izuna!” Madara snaps, shutting his brother down mid-sentence. Tobirama’s mind immediately examines Izuna’s words and his mind goes to dark and long-buried places. Tobirama once heard a rumor about Uchiha marriage practices but it was discarded by his father as ridiculous, insulting, and clearly false.

“Perhaps we should temporarily suspend today's proceedings.” Tobirama suddenly speaks up. “and a private discussion can be had regarding the issue.”

Tobirama pointedly looks at Hashirama and Madara. There is no argument and slowly all present begin to pack their things and dismiss themselves.

“Find out what traditions they are so secretive of but do not make any decisions before discussing it with me,” Tobirama whispers to his brother before gathering his things and leaving the two men to their discussion.

It’s not long before Tobirama senses the sudden spike in his brothers' chakra and the clear shock radiating from it. Their discussion ends soon after that and Tobirama can feel his brother rushing towards him.

“There will be no marriage.” Hashirama quickly tells him when he draws near and then swiftly walks past Tobirama while avoiding his gaze.

“I told you not to make any decisions without speaking with me!” Tobirama yells after his brother who is moving swiftly.

“There is nothing to discuss,” Hashriama shrilly responds, making Tobirama stumble slightly.

“What the hell did he say to have you acting like this?” Tobirama demands to know, finally catching up to his brother and trying to look him in the eyes. Hashirama determinately avoids his gaze but he can not hide the flustered expression on his face.

“Hahshirama!” Tobirama pulls on his brother's arm forcing him to stop. “Tell me!”

Hashirama finally looks at Tobirama but has to almost immediately look away as the flustered expression grows more severe and he has to bury his face in his hands.

“I don’t want to talk about it,” Hashirama miserably moans.

“It can’t be that bad.” Tobirama insists while hoping he does not seem too eager.

“The elders are going to have a conniption if they ever find out.” Hashirama wails into his hands before his head snaps up to look at Tobirama in panic. “They can never find out!”

“Find out what!?” Tobirama tries to get more information from Hashirama but he only furiously shakes his head and insists they travel back to the Senju compound.

It’s only when Tobirama has Hashirama alone in the privacy of their home does he finally get the details from him.

“They consummate their marriages with witnesses present.” Hashirama bluntly tells him before taking a long sip of alcohol leaving Tobirama to silently process the bomb Hashirama has just dropped on his mental landscape.

“Witnesses?” Tobirama repeats

“Witnesses.” Hashirama confirms

“Huh.” Tobirama huffs in disbelief, so the rumors had been true.

“We can’t ask one of our clan members to subject themselves to —”

“I’ll do it.” Tobirama interrupts Hashirama mid tirade, surprising even himself.

“What?” Tobirama schools his face carefully as his brother looks on in shock.

“No,” Hashirama frantically shakes his head. “I can’t let—”

“You are not forcing, commanding or asking of me anything.” Tobirama firmly cuts his brother off. “I want to do this.”

Hashirama is still shaking his head in denial, clenching his fists on the table.

“Father forced you to go on those missions,” Hashirama spat in disgust, “I will never let you sacrifice yourself in such a way again.”

“It’s not a sacrifice,” Tobirama insists “It would be an honor to marry in the name of peace and you know I’ve long craved a family of my own.”

Tobirama employs a sincere and pleading look, hoping that Hashirama would grant him this one wish. Hashirama looks pained as he reaches out to take one of Tobirama's hands with his own.

“And you will have a prestigious wedding befitting your rank,” Hashirama promises him “with a man I can trust will not dishonor you.”

“I don’t think they intend to dishonor me and risk our newly made peace.”  Tobirama assures his brother but grimaces.

“Tobirama be serious.” Hashirama admonished him “Not so long ago the Uchiha’s highest bounty was placed over your head.”

Tobirama remembers that eventful day fondly. He’d finally learnt to use the flying thunder god technique in battle against the Uchiha and their wide eyed stunned disbelief will fuel his ego for years to come.

“You'll be surrounded by people who were ready to pay a fortune to capture you !” Hashirama continues worry “

“It was only so high because they wanted me captured alive.” Tobirama reminds him

“Exactly!” Hashirama frowns “Why would they do that?”

“I assume they wanted my new technique,” Tobirama rolls his eyes. “I can’t give away my secrets if I’m dead.”

“Even more reason not to!” Hashirama counters.

“Anija,” Tobirama gently squeezes his brother's hand.  “I really want to do this, please let me.”

Hashirama studies him closely as Tobirama visibly express his sincerity. Tobirama really really wanted to volunteer.

“No,” Hashirama shakes his head. “I won't let them make a spectacle of you.”

“Hashirama it's their tradition, I'm sure th—”

“There are too many who still crave revenge,” Hashirama interrupts him “I worry they will use this opportunity to humiliate you.”

“That's a risk I'm willing to take,” Tobirama assures him.

“I'm not.” Hashirama solemnly declares. “The answer is no, we will find another way.”

Tobirama sees his dreams slipping away from him and scrambles to find anything that could change Hashirama's mind.

“If we don't reach an agreement soon it will delay construction of the village,” Tobirama quickly reminds him “If we don't get at least the foundation up by summer's end we will have to delay until spring!”

That does give Hashirama pause but he is quick to shrug it off.

“So be it,” He says and Tobirama is cursing his brother's protective loyalty for the first time in his entire life.

“We will eventually have to integrate the Uchiha and their customs into the village,” Tobirama tries, “if I participate in their tradition the Uchiha will be pleased and our own clan will see that there is no harm in it!”

Hashirama looked thoughtful for a moment but was not convinced so Tobirama threw away all composure.

“Hashirama,” Tobirama grips his hand tightly. “I really really really want to do this.” He stares at his brother intently, hoping Hashirama understands what he doesn’t want to say out loud.

Hashirama stares back in confusion, aware that Tobirama is trying to infer something bit entirely unsure what. When Hashirama's eyes show no understanding Tobirama gives up.

“I would enjoy being fucked in front of an audience immensely.” Tobirama dryly informs him. “In fact I crave it.”

Hashirama's face scrunches up in classic sibling disgust as he rips his hand out of Tobirama’s grasp.

“Why would you tell me that!” Hashirama screeches while waving his hands in front of his face, as if trying to dispel the thought.

“How else was I going to get you to agree!?” Tobirama defended himself

“Forget I asked anything then!” Hashirama yells

“Fine!” Tobirama agrees “Does this mean I have your permission?”

Hashirama calms his dramatics then and gives Tobirama a long hard look.

“You are sure this is what you want?” Hashirama asks seriously and Tobirama nods enthusiastically. Hashirama sighs in resignation before giving Tobirama dark glare.

“I never want to hear about it.” Hashirama warns and thus it’s decided. Tobirama would be offered to the Uchiha.

The next meeting between the two clans is strained as everyone avoids the topic of marriage, but at meetings end Tobirama very subtly kicks Hashirama when the issue of the arranged marriage is not brought up.

Hashirama winces and seems to take a deep breath and brace himself.

“About the proposed marriage alliance…” Hashirama begins before trailing off. Madara gives his friend an unimpressed look.

“What about it?” Madara asks sharply when Hashirama does not continue. Hashirama turns to Tobirama who rolls his eyes, sits up and continues for his brother.

“I offer myself as a potential marriage candidate.”  Tobirama quietly informs them “If you find me acceptable.”

There is deafening silence from the Uchiha delegation and Tobirama fights the urge to duck his head. There is a high probability the Uchiha will reject him, he is the white demon after all. The silence grows and Tobirama tries not to flush in embarrassment.

“If you find me unsuitable there are others—” Tobirama hesitantly begins only to be silenced by the loud eruption of noise from the Uchiha.

“Not at all!”

“Of course not!”

“NO!”

Tobirama leans back in alarm at the intensity of the Uchiha denial. They are staring at him with wide eyes and unreadable expressions. Tobirama can’t help but feel relief that it's not disgust, hate, or anger.

“Then I look forward to meeting the candidates you have arranged for me.” he smiles tentatively.

“I volunteer,” Izuka quickly jumps up “You are my rival, I have precedence!”

“The hell you do!” Madara snaps as he grabs the back of his brother's shirt and hauls him back into his seat.

The relief Tobirama had felt earlier was quickly extinguished by Madara’s immediate refusal. Perhaps the majority found him an acceptable prospect, but it was clear Madara did not, especially not for his younger brother.

He hoped the Uchiha would pick someone whose blood he never spilled but that narrowed their numbers considerably. They also had to pick someone of suitable rank and that narrowed down the candidates to mostly the Uchiha present. Tobirama glances at each member of the Uchiha retinue and tries not to feel dread.

He knows who he wants it to be but that is an impossible fantasy.

“We will confer with our elders and return with a list of suitable candidates.” Madara smiles tightly and the meeting ends swiftly after.

During the next appointed meeting, the Uchiha arrive looking extremely worse for wear and missing several prominent members. Not a single Uchiha present is free of wounds. Hikaku has two black eyes, Izuna has an arm in a sling and Madara… well Madara still looked good despite all the injuries.

Even with bandages wrapped around his head, a split lip, and a suspicious new haircut.

“What the hell happened to you?” Hashirama demands to know and instead of receiving a clear explanation, Madara smiles, causing his lip to reopen and blood to run down his chin.

“Just a skirmish,” He grins triumphantly, “Nothing to worry about.”

Despite Hashirama’s questioning Madara refuses to elaborate and the meeting progresses with the Senju blatantly staring at the walking wounded that made up the Uchiha. Tobirama tries not to grow nervous as the negotiations draw to a close and no mention of  marriage comes from the Uchiha.

“One last thing,” Madara finally says before pinning Tobirama with an intense stare. Tobirama feels himself freeze when Madara smirks and his lip begins to bleed again. The sight makes Tobirama clench his thighs together and he feels himself begin to blush.

“We accept your proposal” Madara announces, his smirk growing “and I offer myself, if you’ll have me as your Husband?””

Tobirama is still frozen, gazing at Madara with wide eyes when he feels Hashirama’s chakra begin to rage beside him, prompting him to react.

“I accept.”Tobirama breathes eagerly before Hashirama slams his hands on the table and stands to loom over Madara.

“Can I have a word with you Lord Madara?” Hashirama asks through bared teeth, “In private?”

“Of course,” Madara concedes, never once taking his eyes off of Tobirama. When Hashirama motions for them to take their discussion outside of the tent Madara stands to follow. Except he stands and walks around the table first, promptly taking one of Tobirama’s hands and laying a kiss on it.

“I look forward to our life together” Madara lowly murmurs with a smirk against Tobiramas skin. Tobirama hardly has time to react before Hashirama throws the first punch.

“That’s my little brother you shit!”

The ensuing fight is less a battle of shinobi powerhouses and more like children squabbling in the mud.

Chapter Text

After a ceasefire was declared the Senju and Uchiha decided to hold peace talks on neutral ground between their two lands. For added assurances they all consented to placing chakra dampening seals on the surrounding land and to bring no weapons.

That is why when Hashirama tackles Madara into the ground no one is truly concerned.

Those present watch dispassionately as their clan heads wrestle in the mud and screech at each other incoherently and unanimously decide to let them be.

Instead Tobirama decides to speak with his soon to be family. Tobirama carefully approaches them and can’t help but smile shyly when they all crowd around him and properly introduce themselves.

“Uchiha Setsuna,” introduced himself with a smile and a terribly bruised jawline.

“Nice to meet you,” Tobirama smiles, trying very hard not to grimace. “That looks like it hurts.”

“Not at all,” Setsuna smiles through the pain. “It is an honorably gained wound.”

The phrase confuses Tobirama but he chooses not to ask for elaboration. Soon Setsuna would be family, and Tobirama the wife of his clan head, he should begin caring for his people now.

“May I heal that for you?” Tobirama hesitantly asks, gesturing to the man's wounded face.

“Please do not bother yourself,” Setsuna quickly responds, “it will heal with time.”

“I insist,” Tobirama says, while slowly raising his hand to gently lay it against the side of Setsuna’s face. It takes very little effort or chakra to heal the bruising and in the end Tobirama is left holding a perfectly healed face.

“Isn’t that better?” Tobirama asks with a kind smile and Setsuna only stares dumbly as his face begins to turn bright red. Before Tobirama can ask again if he is alright Setsuna is shoved aside by Hikaku.

“Uchiha Hikaku,” he reintroduces himself, and Tobirama laughs

“Yes, I know.” he says and reaches up to cup Hikaku’s face in his hands, pausing before he makes contact “Is this alright?”

“Yes,” Hikaku quickly responds, pressing his face against Tobirama’s waiting hands. Tobirama is overwhelmed by the trust Hikaku has chosen to show him by letting him near his eyes. Carefully he brushes his thumbs against Hikaku’s brow and slowly begins healing his black eyes.

“Better?” Tobirama asks when he is done and all Hikaku does is gaze at him with unfocused eyes and a dazed grin.

“My turn,” Another Uchiha jostled for position in front of him and Tobirama can’t help the pleased smile that grows on his face. The Uchiha present seemed to be giving him a genuine warm welcome.

“Get your hands off my brother!” Hashirama suddenly shrieks from behind them. Tobirama dropped his hands and turned to chastise his brother only to be stopped by the sudden proximity of his soon to be husband.

Despite being shorter, Madara is practically looming over Tobirama as he glares at his kinsmen with a fury that Tobirama found equal parts frightening and arousing.

“What are you doing?” Madara questions them in a low tone that makes Tobirama feel all sorts of things.

“I was only healing them,” Tobirama responds and Madara’s eyes turn to him.

“Our healers have left them with their wounds so that they may learn from their stupidity.” Madara rumbles

“I’m sorry?” Tobirama asked in confusion. “What sort of healers leave their patients with so many wounds?”

“Do not worry yourself.” Madara’s demeanor changes as he turns to smile at Tobirama. Tobirama wants to protest but he’s quickly interrupted by Hashirama who wedges himself between them.

“Thank you Lord Madara,” Hashirama growls out, while very unsubtly putting Tobirama behind him. “But I think this meeting is over now, me and my brother have much to discuss.”

Madara says nothing but he’s not even looking at Hashirama. His dark eyes are trained on Tobirama who feels himself grow wet. Determined to leave before he shamelessly throws himself at Madara he averts his gaze and bows low.

“Until we meet again.” Tobirama murmurs coyly and lets himself be dragged away by Hashirama.

“Until then.” Madara’s voice is low and filled with promise.

Tobirama lets Hashirama march indignantly all the way home in silent anger, besides him Tobirama doesn’t bother to try to hide his amused smirk or his slightly dazed expression.

“For the love of everything holy please stop fantasizing about it.” Hashirama hisses as they near the gates of their home. Tobirama only pauses momentarily, wondering what gave him away, but then smirks.

“No.” Tobirama promptly refuses, his smirk growing and Hashirama makes an incoherent noise of rage. Tobirama laughs while darting ahead of him to pass through the safety of the gates and away from his tantrum.

Hashirama can throw a fit all he wants, Tobirama will not be dissuaded. He will have Madara as a husband and as such make him Hashirama’s brother by marriage. When this is pointed out to Hashirama his anger is only slightly abated. When the elders ask why Hashirama is reluctant to agree to the match and he has no answer he is forced to concede.

“If they dishonor or hurt you in any way I will hang them from the trees outside their compound walls and only when they rot and fall will I let them take back their dead.” Hashirama vows darkly while punching a pillow and Tobirama rolls his eyes despite being touched.

“They tore down all the trees within easy sight of their compound walls to protect against you spying.” Tobirama dryly reminds him while reviewing the draft of his marriage agreement and Hashirama screeches loudly in displeasure.

“Add that stipulation!” Hashirama demands while pointing at the paperwork in Tobirama’s hands.”Wherever you reside there must be a minimum of one tree— NO TWO! Two trees in each of the cardinal and inter cardinal directions!” Tobirama again rolls his eyes but acquiesces.

The draft is returned with Hashirama’s tree demands accepted but the Uchiha counter with demands that the marriage take place as soon as possible.

“I’m already tempting disaster by not telling the elders about the Uchiha’s consummation tradition,” Hashirama snaps when he reads the new demands “If I cut the courtship time required by our traditions the elders will never let me hear the end of it.” Tobirama agrees but also can’t help but feel frustrated that he’ll be forced to wait months now to be publicly bent over and —

“Stop it!” Hashirama hisses . “You're imagining it again!” Hashirama accuses as he points to the pout on Tobirama’s face that quickly transforms to a false innocent smile.

“I’m just thinking about the delays to the village construction that this will cause,” Tobirama demurely denies while Hashirama glares at him, unconvinced.

“I don’t see why an extended courtship should delay breaking ground.” Hashirama says, crossing his arms “We can begin when your courtship period does and by the time the appropriate time has passed we will have at the very least the foundation up.”

“Will the Uchiha agree to such a long courtship?” Tobirama hesitantly asks and Hashirama shrugged.

“We conceded to their tradition, I see no reason why they cannot concede to ours.” Hashirama’s tone leaves no room for argument.

“Will our elders agree to beginning construction before a marriage joins our two clans together?” Tobirama voices his doubts and that makes Hashirama pause.

“If your courtship ends successfully yours will be the first wedding in our new home,” Hashirama muses, “If the Uchiha want the consummation done in their tradition then we can demand the ceremony will be done in ours, the thought of the first big event in our new village being done in the Senju tradition should appease the elders.”

“Are you giving the elders power to plan my wedding to distract them?” Tobirama asks in disbelief and Hashirama shrugs unapologetically.

“I’m willing to throw anything at them to keep them in the dark until the village is built and they've been moved in,” Hashirama mutters darkly “They can bitch and moan all they want about cultural differences then.”

“While I’m all for it,” Tobirama readily agrees. “You don’t think keeping this information from the elders before forcing them to cohabitate in a village with a clan very culturally different is done in bad faith?”

“Honestly whatever traditions consenting adults freely decide to follow is none of the Elders' concerns.” Hashirama sighs while rubbing his temple. “They’ll learn to be tolerant or else.”

“That certainly won’t backfire,”Tobirama retorts lightly and Hashirama sighs.

“With any luck you’ll be married by then,” Hashirama says with a grimace “and if the Uchiha are true to their words you will be bedded and can attest to the…. respect and consideration you were shown.”

“Don’t look so grim.” Tobirama gently teases “I promise I won’t tell them about all the sordid details.”

“You’re not who I have to worry about,” Hashirama snaps angrily. “Apparently I have to worry about witnesses!”

“You’re being dramatic.” Tobirama scolds him “The Uchiha have long had these traditions yet you have never heard of them before now.”

That does make Hashirama hesitate, forced to concede Tobirama is right. Tobirama conveniently does not mention that he had heard rumors before but they were refuted as outrageous lies by their own father.

Despite his grumbling, Hashirama helps Tobirama decide on a final draft to present to the elders who predictably are distracted by the thought of having to plan the first grand event between their two clans.

Much to everyone's surprise the Uchiha agree to all their demands, With their only condition being that the courtship length would be the bare minimum required by their traditions and that Tobirama and Madara would meet regularly and often.

“Of course you’ll meet regularly.” Hashirama muttered with annoyance “What else do they think we mean by courtship period?”

The Senju and the Uchiha have very different ideas as to what regularly means though because the day after their marriage agreement is finalized Madara appears at their front gate, asking to meet with Tobirama.

Tobirama is still asleep when Madara’s enormous chakra begins to move towards him at high speeds. Still half asleep, Tobirama tracks his enormous chakra as it moves closer and closer until he quickly realizes the Senju compound is Madara's destination. Tobirama nearly trips in his haste to get up and get dressed.

Hashirama naturally meets his friend at the front gate and then after a short discussion he lets Madara walk into the very heart of the Senju ancestral home. Inside the clan head's home Tobirama is desperately trying to comb his stubborn hair while his cousin and maid frantically attempt to wrap him in a suitable kimono.

“Hold still!” Touka hisses with enormous pins in her mouth as she and the maid struggle to wrap, tie, and pin his clothes into place.

“Why is he here without prior warning!” Tobirama groans in irritation, keeping one eye on the large pins his cousin was welding.

“Inconsiderate and rude bastard,” Touka snarls while the maid gasps at her harsh words “What sort of person shows up unannounced to declare their intentions!”

Hashirama walks into this madness to announce Madara’s arrival and everyone in the room freezes to stare at him in panic.

“Why is he here?” Tobirama groans as he tries to brush out his lopsided bed head. “Tell him to come back later.”

“Tobirama, he knows what you look like?” Hashirama remarks in amusement and Tobirama resists the urge to throw the comb at his stupid brother's smiling face.

“It’s the first meeting of our courtship!” Tobirama snaps angrily , knowing full well he sounds silly and vain. If he had less control he might even stomp his foot in annoyance at this whole situation. The smile falls from Hashirama’s face and he grows suitably serious.

“You’re right,” Hashirama quickly says, “I will tell him to leave and return when he properly declares himself.”

“No!” Tobirama quickly cuts him off and shoos away his fretting helpers as they attempt to pin more adornments on to his person. “I’ll meet with him!”

The sooner their courtship begins the sooner it could end and the closer Tobirama would be to getting publicly pinned under Madara and —

“Stop it!” Hashirama shouts pointing at his face and Tobirama’s glares at his brother as he shoves past him and out to meet with Madara.

Madara Uchiha is standing in the center of their compound, dressed immaculately with his hands clasped behind his backs and a pleasant smile on his face.

Tobirama finds it difficult to hold on to his ire in the face of a man who is clearly very happy to be there. Tobirama sighs and approaches his betrothed in careful measured steps. With his annoyance melting away Tobirama is quick to deduce that nobody has bothered telling Madara how the Senju begin courtship.

“You are here very early,” Tobirama murmurs, stepping closer to Madara than he probably should and then bowing low. Madara raises an eyebrow at the statement and then glances up at the sun high in the sky.

“I keep nocturnal hours.” Tobirama stiffly remarks “Does that bother you?”

“Not at all,” Madara is quick to assure him, his smile turning to a smirk “So long as my husband makes time for me during the long nights.”

Madara is staring intently at him, then as Tobirama watches his pupils suddenly dilate and his eyes grow dark. His focused gaze becomes hazy and his eyes begin to wander, to Tobirama’s lips, then his neck, then further down. Abruptly Tobirama realizes just how Hashirama could so easily tell he was lost in fantasy.

“The time you get,”Tobirama quietly interrupts Madara’s thoughts “depends entirely on rewards you can give me.”
