concept sketches for future fics

Summary:

I decided to share some of the sketches i've been working on for scenes in fics I'm currently writing (and will eventually post).

Chapter 1: honey child sketches

Chapter Text

These sketches are from a fic I'm working on where Rick and Negan are both younger (mid-20's and late-30's respectively).

The basic premise for this fic is that Rick is young enough that his father is actually the one that leads the group. Rick still maintains a lot of authority, and consequently many things happen the same way as in canon, but he is ultimately free from the burden of leadership. This in turn allows him to maintain some of the hope he has in seasons 1 & 2. Negan for his part notices, upon confronting the group, that Rick has a lot of potential. Potential that is being squandered in the shadow of his father, and so he takes it upon himself to change that -- namely, by taking Rick instead of Daryl.

The fic title is 'honey child,' which was taken from a song called "long way home" by Shaman's Harvest.

And you're too old for the sweet songs
And too young for rock'n'roll
Honey child, you're a long way from home
And you give just as good as you're gettin' now
But be careful, you don't reap what you sow
Well honey child, you're a long way from home

Chapter 2: hold me with open claws

Chapter Text

These sketches are from a fic I'm working on that is a high school AU with a bonus murder mystery lol. One of the poses you may recognize from that art meme that goes around with the different poses of characters carrying each other, and I used that as reference bc the idea of Rick dragging Negan through the mud was exceedingly funny to me.

the title of this story is from the song "teenager" by black honey.

Chapter 3: burning bright

Summary:

from a no zombie au murder mystery case-fic style type thing lol. i used a stock photo for pose reference and immediately lost it :'). and i used reference for both of the boys but rip to andrew lincoln bc i still can't draw him lmfao ☠️

Chapter Text

Chapter 4: burning bright .

Summary:

sketch that maybe i will finish eventually but probably not ☠️☠️ (another one where i used a ref photo and now cannot find it so rip me)

Chapter Text

Chapter 5

Notes:

this fic (honey child) is trucking along at almost 45k now haha. it's looking like it's going to be a monster bc i'm not even at the halfway mark for the plot ☠️

Chapter Text

More sketches of Negan from my 'honey child' fic -- the one where Rick and Negan are both younger & rick's dad is the leader of Alexandria.

Chapter 6

Summary:

more honey child stuff that i did during class! you get some more realistic stuff since that's actually the style im most comfortable with. It is messy tho bc i was supposed to be paying attention to literally anything else :')

a lot of u are super excited about this fic, which is super motivating. the outline is now at 62k words...and like, i'm not even halfway through the plot. I've been working on the first chapter and it's already at like 10k words and in the outline it was about, uh. 1500. So, we're in for a ride.

Unfortunately, though, I've got about 35k in research papers to be writing. I want to at least have the first two chapters fully written out (not just outlined) before I start posting, so hopefully, that'll be sometime in May after finals!

So, anyways, here is young rick and his father, who is technically not an OC but may as well be since i had to make up his name and face and personality lol. I also feel bad for not like...providing any info on the actual fic so I've included a snippet :)

Chapter Text

“Your old man is a crazy son of a bitch. Did you know that?”

Rick doesn’t know what he’s talking about, or what his father had done or said to provoke that question. He finds himself floundering for some kind of answer, but Negan continues before he lands on a response.

“That man would burn the world for you. In fact, Dwight thinks the moment he finds out you’re not locked up in my fucking basement, he’s going to try something.”

Rick understands where this is going, but he still can’t fathom how they had reached this conclusion -- or why Negan was taking the risk.

”You’re going to test Dwight’s hypothesis for me.”

“And what happens to my dad if he’s right?”

“Nothing. I just need to know what I’m fucking working with.”

“Wouldn’t it be better to kill him?” Rick asks after a moment, unable to figure out Negan’s game. If Negan thought his father was as volatile as he seemed to, Rick couldn't figure the benefits of keeping him around from a strategic standpoint -- and he wasn't stupid enough to think he would keep him around for Rick's sake.

“Do you want me to?” Negan asks, and it comes out so earnestly it occurs to Rick that he might actually do it, if Rick asked him to.

“No!” He snaps, anxiety curling in his gut, worried Negan might do it anyway now that he’d put the idea there when apparently, unbelievably, it hadn’t been before. Negan smirks at him, amused, and Rick has to look away to quell the urge to smack him.

“What do you think would happen if your father did attack us today?” Negan asks, and it’s not a threat this time, but a test. Rick knows the answer Negan wants, but he also knows that answer is the right one. Alexandria doesn’t have any guns, from what he understands, and besides that, most of the people there can't fight. Even with Hilltop, it’s unlikely they’d win, and on such short notice, that alliance wouldn’t do much anyway.

So he says, “He’d get people killed.”

“Yes, he fucking would. And do you think he would care?” Rick is about to answer when Negan cuts him off. “No, he fucking wouldn’t. Not if you were still alive and kicking.”

“That's not--”

“If Dwight’s right -- and I think he fucking is -- then your old man would have killed every damn person there that night himself if it meant keeping you. And I can use that.”

“Fuck you--”

“Watch it, Rick,” Negan reminds him with a sharp smile, his grip tightening where it had been resting on the seat behind Rick's shoulder.

“He wouldn’t do that. You’re wasting your time.” Rick says instead. His father would do a lot for him, and had done a lot for him. But he had let Rick go that night, had let Rick make that choice, and didn’t try to trade anyone away in Rick’s stead. Dwight was wrong.

“I guess we’ll see,” Negan says, sounding for all intents and purposes completely amicable.

“How are you so sure I won’t go along with it -- if he does have a plan?”

“You won’t.”

“I thought you didn’t trust me?”

“I don’t need to trust you on this because I’ve got historical fucking precedent, dumbass.”

Rick can’t argue that. It was why Rick was there to begin with, and it was why he was still by Negan's side without so much as a gun pointed in his direction. He wouldn’t do anything because if he did, people would die. And for one cruel moment, he wanted to cut his heart out just so he wouldn’t have to deal with the consequences that came with having one. Frustration and sorrow distilled into some new emotion that left him feeling agonized and numb with grief all at once; how many times would he let people turn his heart into a weapon only to kill him with it?
