Chapter 31

Notes:

Hi, yea, so like I'm really sorry how long it took me to get back to this. Life has been hard... Starting with October 2021. I had a huge falling out with my previous boss at the end of January which led me to quitting that job and moving two states to start another, and that job isn't going great either. Life's a struggle, I guess... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Chapter Text

Over the next day, Lan WangJi stayed at his side as he rested. He played “Cleansing” and “Clarity” as Wei WuXian reasted. His rest, Lan WangJi suspected, was not entirely restful. The sounds of soldiers coming and going roused him from his light sleep. Jiang YanLi would soothe her brother back to sleep anytime he woke. She had been shocked to see her brother in such a shape, he had always been easy to arouse at the sign of any danger, but now his fight or flight was working overtime.

Lan WangJi decided to hang silencing around the room to help keep outside noise, just that, outside. He gently felt along his meridians and lower dantian, despite his playing and Wei WuXian resting, they were stagnant. He replaced Wei WuXian’s arm under the blanket. He then smoothed down WeiWuXian’s hair.

“Still no better?”

Lan WangJi looked up to see Jiang YanLi looking back at him. She had just come back for the medical units. She had become skilled in basic first aid, and had been a great help there. Lan WangJi shook his head. Jiang YanLi looked over at her brother, she wished she could do more, but matters such as this were beyond what she had skills to manage. ”Lan Er-Gongzi, do you think healers in Cloud Recesses would have skills in this area?”

Lan WangJi stared at Wei WuXian, would they be more able to care for him in Cloud Recesses? He couldn't really be sure, but also being here wasn’t doing him any good. Nothing they had tried there had made little difference. At the very least, it would be farther away from the fighting. “Hm, perhaps.”

Jiang YanLi nodded, “I see. I will go talk to A-Cheng.”

Lan WangJi nodded, left alone with Wei WuXian, he sat at his side. His thoughts wondered, what had happened in the time Wei WuXian was missing? His core was definitely there, but it felt so flimsy, like it wasn’t pulling together. Driving away the resentful energy was proving difficult as well, he didn’t want to push any harder with Wei WuXian in this condition. “Wei Ying.”

“Lan WangJi,” said a gruff and tired voice.

“Jiang WanYin.”

Jiang Cheng stood with his arms crossed. Lan WangJi wasn’t surprised, Wei WuXian was his little brother, and they had just got him back. Jiang YanLi had suggested taking him back to Gusu and Jiang Cheng could not come with. Though Jiang Cheng’s face softened seeing his brother. “Do you really think they could help him in Gusu?”

Lan WangJi met his gaze, “Chances are better. We aren’t making noticeable progress here. Moving him will introduce stress, but Wei WuXian is unwell in a way that normal medic would not be trained in, specialists in Gusu may have more luck, he is also familiar with them.”

Jiang Cheng nodded, short and curt. “He did get along with them…” He recalled their time in Cloud Recess, yes he did like the doctors and healers. He was always tuned into the world around him. It made since, a place that Wei WuXian felt safe would help him relax, and by extension heal.

Jiang Cheng clicked his tongue, but Lan WangJi let it slide, his choice held his brother’s life in the balance. He remembered the time his brother was missing, the frustration and desperation he felt. Jiang Cheng let his hands fall to his sides as he walked to his brother’s side. He took a long look at him, he touched his brother’s cheek. He had to take the chance, because Lan WangJi was right, if Wei WuXian stayed here he would waste away. He touched his forehead to his brother’s, “A-Xian, please, just get better.” After a moment, he turned to Lan WangJi, “I’m interesting my brother to you, Lan WangJi. Please take care of him.”

“Hm,” he said with a slight bow. He stood getting things together, he wanted to leave as soon as possible. Lan WangJi thought he heard Jiang Cheng mutter out a thank you. Jiang Cheng was needed here as a sect leader, and he had entrusted him one of his only family members left. Lan WangJi couldn’t afford to fail not only because of his love and care for Wei WuXian, but for the love and care of his family who could not be at his side.
