“I’m just saying you could definitely do better than him,” he muttered, avoiding her gaze.
She let out a short laugh, completely baffled. “Why do you even care?”
Anthony froze, the question hitting him harder than it should have. “I—I don’t,” he stammered after a beat, his voice unconvincing even to himself.
“Right,” Kate said, her tone dripping with sarcasm. “Totally believable. Thanks for your input, Anthony, but I don’t need you playing overprotective big brother tonight.”
“That’s not what I’m doing,” he shot back, frustration edging into his voice. “I just—” He stopped himself, running a hand through his hair. “Forget it.”

Summary

He decides that a conversation is in order between them to clear the air, which goes about as well as you might expect. Kate is left to pick up the pieces and find a way forward for her family. Which, most disconcertingly, might just involve the one person who has caused all this pain for her family to begin with.
