The pizza was opened up on the coffee table, and Olivia was eating it straight out of the box and was chewing on a mouthful when he walked in with a bouquet that was at least three times wider than her dad’s chest. “What the heck is that?”
“A birthday present,” Billie responded quietly and set the flowers down beside the pizza so that the addressed envelope was facing her directly. He could tell by her expression that Olivia recognized the handwriting at once, making her look like she’d just seen a ghost—probably an apt comparison—and she moved as slowly as he had, sitting forward to drop her slice back into the box and rubbing the grease off onto her black leggings. Billie nodded at her, and then towards the bouquet, standing by the coffee table with his arms folded tight across his aching chest and bottom lip between his teeth. Waiting.

For all of the effort you and Mike have put in, to have a child years ago, it’s happening now because the time is right for your body now in a way that it wasn’t when you were thirty or thirty-five. Biology often knows best, if you can understand what I mean by that.”
Billie Joe listened to the calm way his doctor spoke, and in conjunction with the kindness that had returned to his gaze, replacing the excitement and amusement that had been there previously, he remembered why he had chosen Dr. Carmichael to be his doctor all those years ago. The explanation settled on him like a weighted blanket, and it left him with little room for argument, because how could he argue with biology? Shoulders slumping, Billie released a quick sigh, and the corners of his mouth even began to tilt upwards. “I guess… I’m having a baby, then.”

Summary
On the surface, it would appear that Billie Joe’s life is pretty great. He doesn’t have to work because his alpha, Luke, is a successful lawyer, affording him the ability to be a stay at home dad. They have a beautiful house in the suburbs, and there’s not a single material thing Billie wants that he doesn’t already have. If you’re on the outside looking in, they’re a picture perfect family—the kind Billie always wanted.
But as for what goes on behind closed doors? That’s a completely different story.
