    Summary

“Here,” Emily gently pokes at Mary’s ring. At Frances. “ ‘S here. ‘S nice.”

“How can you tell?” Mary asks, though, looking into Emily’s violet eyes, she answers her own question.

Emily is seeing through the veil, though she has never known it. It’s evident when the little girl frowns, and shrugs, almost pouting. “It likes me.”

“She’s not an it,” Mary snaps, feeling her free hand go to her heart, as if in reflex.

To protect Frances from anyone else who sees her as less than a person.

The instinct fades when Mary looks at Emily, whose little face is contrite. She’s a child, making sense of a power that’s been obscured and exploited for years. That power has led her straight to Frances.

Nevermind Isabella or Ellen, the spirits who seem to frequent this place. Emily has seen Frances, and has been trying to talk to her all this time.

    Mary isn't the favorite aunt/godmother.

    Frances is.

OR, When visiting Silas and Daphne, Mary is the first to discover that their eldest daughter can see beyond the veil. When she senses none other than Frances.

    Summary

Silas feels the exact moment the rabbit reemerges for a brief, horrible second. It’s when he looks into Emily’s eyes.

Silas sees her eyes, violet and full of life. They almost seem to sparkle when she giggles as Daphne boops her nose and sets her down near the dandelion patch.

What if they take her? There are other Speakers. They’re still out there, and they could come for you all over again, and this time, they’ll take her too.

OR, In a quiet moment, Silas looks into the eyes of his firstborn and sees all the ways the world could hurt her.

    Summary

There was a feeling that pricked at the back of Daphne’s throat as she handed Emily over to Silas. It was utterly irrational in every way, yet she felt stabs of jealousy and heartbreak prickling throughout her body, pinning themselves to her shoulders and chest and stomach.

As she watched Silas nurse and rock their now-docile daughter, she was outside herself. She felt more a spectator than a mother.
Daphne’s mother sang to her. Emily Luckenbill calmed down her daughter without fail. Daphne always stilled in the presence of her mother, from what she could remember, at least. It was her father that disquieted her.

Yet, when it comes to Daphne and her little Emily, the same could not be said. Daphne tries not to let it hurt her, to think that there’s this thought-of pillar of womanhood that she’s somehow failing at.

Or, Daphne has to contend with the societal ideal of what a mother's love should look like.
