But, he slides out the driver’s seat, tinny door swinging shut behind him, Kita-san waiting by the steps leading up to his house with a kindness that has cost Osamu many a sleepless night, and Osamu isn't thinking about anything else. There is only Kita-san, this moment, and the heat, startling and suffused.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Kita-san doesn’t say anything until Osamu is back in his truck and he is watching him from his porch and they are watching each other; then, suddenly, he is walking, Osamu is rolling down his window, he is leaning in, and something soft and pliant is touching the shell of Osamu’s ear.

“Osamu,” he says, again with his nonchalant lilt, bored-sounding. Except, Osamu catches the smile tucked into the corner of his lips. Except, Kita-san isn’t telling him to run extra laps or stop fighting with Atsumu, he is saying, “If you don’t ask when you want something, how am I supposed to give it to you?”

Osamu does not face him, because he would have to kiss him, then, and that would be immensely difficult to salvage. Instead, he clears his throat and grips his steering wheel. He feels the huff of breath from Kita-san’s chuckle more than he hears it, and hates and loves in equal measure Kita-san’s cunning.

“I’m looking forward to next time,” Kita-san says, peeling himself off of Osamu’s truck.

“See ya, Kita-san,” Osamu mutters, pulling out of the driveway.

Surprising no one but himself, it is Osamu who makes the first move.

You’re too eager, Suna says without looking up from his phone, like it is old news. From across the couch, Osamu tries to kick him; Suna evades deftly. When he flicks his gaze up to meet Osamu’s, Osamu sees that his lips are curled. I would know.

Akagi manages a weak smile. Well, you know how Shinsuke is, he says. He knows what he wants.

Aran gives him a pat on the back — less congratulatory and more consolatory… for what? Osamu decides to stop telling their old teammates about Kita.

    *

On his lap, his hands ball into fists. Osamu steels himself.

“Kita-san,” he says, and does not touch his tea. He thinks he should ask Kita-san how he is doing, how the cultivating of rice is going, anything but what tumbles out of his lips, which is, “I thought about what you said.” The corner of Kita-san’s lips twitch precisely once: a minute sign of recollection, but Osamu latches onto it, will not misinterpret it for anything else. Today, his hunger is singular. “I think I would like to kiss you, now.”

Kita-san bursts into laughter. Understandable. Osamu holds his ground.

“I was joking, you know,” Kita-san says, once he is recovered, hands crossed on the table.

Osamu clears his throat. “About the kissing?”

“No,” Kita-san says, shaking his head. He slides lazily down the table, until his chin is tucked into the crook of an elbow. “About asking.”

    Summary

Suna watched as Kita Shinsuke messed with the waistband of the skirt he was wearing.

“I don’t understand the appeal,” Kita said, moving his hips so the long skirt swayed around his legs, “Wouldn’t a short skirt be more appealing?”

    Bookmarker's Notes

“We may not have made it very far at spring nationals, but that season still meant a lot to me. Having you as my captain meant a lot to me.”

“I am already in your bedroom, Osamu. There is no need to charm me further.”

“I’m serious,” Osamu said, stepping forward and grabbing Kita gently by the waist, though his eyes were still on the uniform. “That year playing with you, playing for you, it meant so much to me. How could I ever throw away the uniform I wore while we played together?”

“You’re sweet,” Kita said, trailing a hand over Osamu’s cheek and turning him to face him.
