“And yet, here I am, trying,” Aventurine cuts in, smiling, that gods-awful fake smile. He nudges the tray forward before taking a few steps backwards. “Trying anyway. And it still isn’t good enough.”
“Aventurine. Don’t—”
“Don’t worry, doctor. I’ll still love you tomorrow.” It’s said as if it’s a punchline to some cruel joke. All the while, Ratio is helpless to do anything but to watch dumbly as the distance between them yawns wider. “Next time, I’ll book an appointment. Enjoy your coffee.”
