The question came from Abbot, directed straight to Frank alone. The smug smirk on Abbot’s face as he stared across the table at Frank made that clear. That and the fact that Frank was the only person at the table who had been married before, besides Abbot himself.
It should have been a throwaway question.

“Frank, why would we move in together?”
“I thought it might be nice,” he shrugs here, acting nonchalant even though Mel can see the tension in his jaw. “To take that next step in our relationship.”
“Frank, what are you talking about? We’re not in a relationship?”
At this, Frank’s frown deepens before widening into a frustrated half smile. “Uh, yes we are? We’ve been dating for nine months?”

He nods a few times, trying to convince himself this really is good, and a not fucking sign from the universe that everything leads back to Mel for him.
“I just have to say it. Frank, she is Mel.”
“Fuck,” he says and walks up the steps to window to see for himself.
She’s there, sitting at a table by herself and looking like a dream with her hair loose and an oversized sweater on that he has the urge to put his hands under.
“Fuck,” he repeats. “How the fuck did this happen?”
