Everyone sort of freezes at the words. Ava’s eyebrows disappear into her hairline, Bucky stops in place, Yelena chokes on her drink, and Walker genuinely starts malfunctioning halfway through his sentence. The rest of it comes out like a garbled mess of gibberish that Bob snickers at.
“You too, Bob,” Alexei says simply, and the most bizarre part of it all is that, despite all their stunned faces, not a single person tries to correct him.

Bucky tugs off his jacket and tosses it onto a bench. He rolls his shoulders, the metal arm glinting dully under the light in the center of the room.
And Ava’s brain scrambles to catch up.
He never spars with any of them. Never. Yelena teased him about it once or twice. Walker challenged him outright more than thrice. Alexei provoked him almost daily during lunchtime. The answer is always the same flat, boring no. So Ava never even bothered asking.
And now… this? With her?
She narrows her eyes, almost accusingly. “Why?”
“Well,” he says, “you can’t exactly hit Walker right now. No matter how much you want to.”
She just stares at him.
Bucky shrugs. “You wanna work out the noise in your head? Don’t use the bag. Hit something that hits back.” His mouth twitches. “That’s me.”
