Summary
Jay stares down at the fish in her hands. She doesn't know what kind it is, only that she has to grip it tightly in both hands to stop it from squirming onto the deck. Chip hooks his chin over her shoulder.
"Are you gonna bite it?"
"I need to." She presses her tongue gently against one of her new fangs—courtesy of Anastasia—and grimaces. Her stomach rumbles. "I don't want to though."
"Yeah." He's startlingly warm against her. And he smells good. She inhales deeply, soaking in his scent. She can smell his blood so strongly she almost gets lightheaded. She wants so desperately to feed from him. But she can't. It's not safe. What if she hurts him? What if she tries and she just can't control herself? What if he thinks she's gross and disgusting and evil? What if watching her feed makes him realize that she's not worth it? What if-
"Hey. Breathe." He squeezes his arms around her middle. "It's okay, Jaybird."

Summary
Gillion sighs heavily and readies himself, reaching for a small knife at his waist. If only he had time to prepare something grander. He slices away a small part of the net tied around his hips, and approaches her. Jay gives him a confused look as he drops to one knee, holding the net up.
"Jay," he starts, uncharacteristically nervous, "I know we haven't known each other long, but with this piece of me, I offer myself to you, that we may be joined together in an act of love, if you choose to accept." He stresses the final few words, just in case the room needs them. Lunadeyis please understand, he prays silently, squeezing his eyes shut for a moment. This isn't what She envisioned marriage to ever look like, he's sure, but he can't envision a better way for them to get out of this room. Not without making a true commitment.
Jay's eyes are wide with confusion, but she smiles slightly as she takes the piece of netting from his hand, fingers brushing against his. "I do," she says, voice steady despite her clear uncertainty.
"Then by Lunadeyis, it shall be."
Or, after a failed kiss with Chip, Gillion marries Jay.

Summary
Jay smooths down her hair, ensuring that it's all in the neat french braid that RAFT requires. The white ribbon is, of course, in a perfect bow at the end, and her Ferin pin gleams in the sunlight filtering in through the window.
She adjusts her shirt, and sighs. She still has a little while before her first class, but it's a better look for her—and her family, as Dad keeps saying—if she goes to breakfast in full uniform. Despite the fact that almost no one else does.
She slides on her navy blue coat—the color of cadets in the officer academy, white and red are reserved for the upper ranks—and smiles insincerely in the mirror. Her reflection smiles back at her, lips politely upturned, blue eyes cool with calculation. It had taken her hours to master that look. One that the rest of her family can turn on instantly, it seems.

Summary
Jay is 8 years old the first time she picks up a gun. It's her uncle's pistol, and he laughs as her small, clumsy hands fumble with it. She frowns, concentrating heavily, because she wants to do this right. Dad got her a small bow for her birthday, but Uncle Drey can do so many more things with his pistol than she can.
"You've got it, Jay-Jay. Just stay focused." He crouches next to her, gently arranging her hands into the correct positions. "Do you want to try and shoot the target?"
"Yeah," she says, squinting at her archery target across the yard. "Is that okay to shoot?"
"Probably. I can repair it." He waves it off, laughing. Uncle Drey laughs a lot, whenever he comes to visit them.
Or, Jay and her targets.

Summary
Jay leaves him in the stifling silence, the heavy thud of the door closing ringing in his ears.
As soon as she leaves, he coughs, his body shaking with the force of it. Something feels like it’s clogging his lungs, almost like he has a cold. He wants Jay to come back, to rest her human-warm hands on his skin and—
Gillion coughs violently, hacking until something sits in his open palm. Flower petals…? They’re…blue. But why would he be coughing them up? Something tickles the edge of his memories, of something one of his parents told him about before he left—some sort of story about a merfolk who was cursed. But he can’t be cursed!

Summary
He suddenly saw all the tiny things in a new light, as if understanding something about himself that he’d never thought to question before. The brief thrill in his stomach when Chip slapped a hand on his shoulder or back, or when Jay fixed his hair for him, running her finger over his scalp, moving between his corals to tame stray strands of hair that were standing up. The easy joy of having Pretzel attach herself to his hand, using suction to defy gravity and stay seated on him for hours. The lingering feeling of warmth that stayed with him hours after he was hugged, and the startling vulnerability he felt when a stranger touched him beyond a handshake. Sometimes, women would drape themselves over him in bars, hoping to find a new customer in him, and even if Gillion didn’t know what exactly they were offering, he always thought their bare skin against his felt—strange.
“Jay,” he said, only a few days later, having mulled it over again and again. “I am hungry for skin.”
"What."

Summary
It starts as a joke, much like everything else in this cyclical death-game Grian’s been thrown into (mostly) (kind of) (okay, not really) against his will. They’re the Villains! So, even though none of them are the boogeyman, he and Gem pepper the sand dunes in front of their house with pitfalls.
“It makes sense,” Gem justifies to a wary Pearl. “We’re allowed to defend our base! Especially with all those boogeymen out there.” She shudders theatrically.
