“Antivan, right?” asked Harding, looking over at Lucanis. “What's it about?”
Spite hissed in his ear. “She sang. For you. I want a song.”
Lucanis resisted putting his head in his hands or taking a swing at the demon. That would just be embarrassing for both of them. He forced himself to answer. “The singer is negotiating with the sea to bring their lover home,” he said. “I'll give you my silks. I'll give you my gold. I'll give you my jewels. The sea refuses, says I have already taken your heart, there is nothing of greater worth you can offer.”
(Lucanis is exhausted. Spite is a music lover. Feelings are felt but damned if the parties involved can make any sense of them. Written for the Word with Friends challenge on Tumblr for the word "Balter." Pre-relationship Rookanis.)

Lucanis' hands are elegant, precise, each movement deliberate without being stiff. He shuffles the deck with mechanical ease, cuts the cards cleanly, deals without flair. Rook watches it all, watches his nimble fingers as he sorts his hand, and sees not even the slightest hint of a cheat. But she knows it's there.
It's maddening.

Then she meets Lucanis Dellamorte, a rich guy with enough skeletons in his closet to fill a graveyard, and her life gets even messier. Grief is weird, being an adult is hard, and falling in love might be the messiest thing of all.
This is a story about two people falling in love, but it’s also my love letter to the friend group. It’s not a very serious story, except when it is (because life’s not that serious, except when it is.)
