    Summary

Her eyes still sting. Meryl’s legs feel weak as she hauls herself upright, a hand on the doorframe. There is more work to be done, but she should take a break for lunch and apologise to her partners, who have given her more than an appropriate amount of space. Adults don’t hide away in a cave because they don’t feel like talking to people. Even if the light that sneaks in when Meryl opens the door makes her flinch, she has to tough it out. She got so good at doing that, back in University.

“Nick, grab that lamp, would you?”

Millie’s soft, sweet voice. Pleasant on the ears, soothing like tea with honey when you have a sore throat. Meryl lets out a quiet sigh as she steps into the hallway, eyes screwed shut. The light dims after a beat, with no footsteps to follow it. Nicholas is doing his weird assassin walking thing. Meryl notices him when he comes close, a large dark shadow in her peripheral. He doesn’t reach out and touch her.

    ---

Meryl wakes up on the wrong side of the bed, so to speak. Her partners step in to tend to her.
