    Summary

    It’s been thirty-seven days.

    She’s counted.

There’s a part of her that wonders if she should be grateful. The world is safe, the monsters are gone, the fans are singing again and the demons are locked away back where they came from. But inside her, the stage is dark and the music doesn’t start in the right tempo, in the correct rhythm, in the right tune.

And she doesn’t know how to mourn someone who gave up everything and asked for nothing in return. She doesn’t even know how to miss someone who was never hers.

    Or,

Jinu burned and vanished in her arms, and now he haunts her dreams in soft smiles and lingering stares — and Rumi doesn’t know what’s worse: that he’s gone, or that her heart insists he never really left.

    Summary

Jinu always figured his life as a half-demon hunter would be straightforward: find demons, slay demons, keep the Honmoon seal locked up tight, repeat as necessary. No room for doubt, distractions, or demonic shenanigans.

Then Rumi shows up. She’s a full-blooded demon with a smart mouth, zero respect for personal boundaries, and an annoying habit of dodging every one of Jinu’s attacks. He’s supposed to kill her. But every time he gets close, she does something unexpected to disarm him and throws him off balance.

The more he chases her, the more confused he gets. Is he losing his edge or is it just really hard to kill someone who keeps making him laugh? Suddenly, Jinu’s questioning everything. His mission, his destiny, and especially why he can’t seem to stop thinking about Rumi’s ridiculous grin. Turns out, slaying demons is a lot harder when one of them might just be your new favorite headache.

    Summary

“No,” Rumi groaned, clutching her head. “This can’t be happening.”

“Well, what did you expect?” Jinu asked. The seal of the Four Tiger Sword warped his voice, draping it in an especially thick layer of velvet. She didn’t care for it. “I gave you my soul. I’m a part of your weapon now. I’m a part of you.”

“Yeah, but I figured that was more, you know, a metaphorical thing!”

“...Yeah, no. I’m, uh, very much still here. Closer than you think.”

    Rumi’s eyes narrowed. “How close?”

    “You don’t want to know.”

    Or:

Rumi discovers what Jinu’s ultimate sacrifice entails and finds the aftermath comes with a few sharp edges.

    Summary

    “Rumi,” Jinu whispers. “Hi.”

Rumi sobs. Her hands tremble with the desire to reach out for him, but she doesn’t dare. He can’t be here. She’s died, the demons have overpowered her and this is her last, desperate vision before she leaves this plane of existence forever. She looks down at the ground, because she fears that if she looks at him for too long, he’ll disappear again. She couldn’t bear that.

His hands cup her face. “Don’t cry,” he murmurs. “Please don’t cry. I can’t stand it.”

    Summary

The thing is, Rumi has always known loss.

She runs and runs and runs, trying to escape the hold it seems to have on her - but the pounding of her feet against the ground and the wind rushing in her ears as the city passes her by in a blur often leaves her with more time to think about it all than she likes.

It's etched right into her bones, twined into the fibre of her being as surely as the patterns on her skin.

After all, it's that knowledge, that maybe, which is what haunts a person most.

Loss is burned into her soul, bright as the demon-fire from her dreams.
