Summary
“We ventured too far, considering our unexpectedly low number.” Essek turns his face against the light, as if to let it cleanse some unwanted quality from his expression. Instead, he looks carved in bone, immortalized in frowning marble. “There were … traps. Perfectly clever ones. Still functioning.”
—--------
Essek tries and fails and tries to save the man he loves.

Summary
“Come here?” Caleb asks, parting his own legs a little wider. He wears an expression of casual awe, and below it, a smart-looking vest and shirt over wide linen trousers, and below that, the traveler’s boots he refuses to give up.
Essek could go to him easily. Because he likes to make life challenging for himself and for others, he instead circles around the armchair Caleb is occupying, pausing behind it to drag out the moment. He hears the shaky exhale he was waiting for. His lips curl up in satisfaction.
The two of them have pined and prowled and yearned enough in their youth to make a game of it now. They have earned such things.

Summary
The skull of the genasi taunts him.
Lingering on its faint glow, Essek wonders what had been meant by the warning he had received from the lilac-haired woman. Almost got lost—in what, exactly? The statement implies depth, intricacy, labyrinthine mysteries to delve into.

Summary
“I should clarify,” said Essek, when Marion returned with the box. “We have experimented with intoxicants before, with initial success and subsequent failure. Recently, we have used enchantment, though Caleb hesitates to become reliant on it for ethical reasons, and I for practical ones.”
Marion raised a brow. “You don’t wish to condition yourself to come in your trousers every time he makes to cast?”

Summary
A cheerful voice echoed in his head like a temple bell: Heeeeeeey Essek! How are you? We miss you — especially Caaaayleb. Orange festival soon in Nicodranas, we’ll be at port then. Come see us, pleeeeease!
His tongue felt like dead fish in his mouth. Had he had fallen asleep? He hadn’t done that since he was a child. Why was he on the floor? He tried to form words, but it just came out as a groaned exhale.
Essek is poisoned-- luckily his new friends won't stop bothering him and one in particular knows a little something about poisons.
