todd anderson has one mission - graduate top of his class from welton academy, get into yale, and finally prove his parents wrong. he is not just a worse, younger version of his older brother, no... todd anderson is different. better, even, than jeffrey, and nothing is going to get in his way.
until he gets to campus on the first day of junior year and meets his roommate -- neil perry, 4.0 gpa earner, top of their class (for now) and welton's golden boy. but even the shiniest of pearls can have cracks, and todd may just end up finding out where neil's are.
(it's 2000-something in vermont, and todd has transferred to welton academy in his junior year after attending balincrest since the 6th grade. at welton, todd finds confidence, gains more friends than he'd ever hoped for, and finds an academic rival in neil perry -- all while trying (and failing) to get his parents to pay attention to him for once. meanwhile, neil deals with a controlling father and falling in love with a boy who hates him, knox grapples with unrequited love, and charlie is oblivious... until he isn't.)
