Summary
In 1938, there's a bar in Brooklyn called Sully’s where people are safe to be themselves. Behind the bar, a girl pours drinks. She's always got a big smile for Steve and she says queer like it's a good thing. On a regular basis, she takes his shoulders in her hands and tries to shake sense into him, saying, "When will you do something about that best friend of yours?"
In 2012, Bucky’s gone, but Steve’s not, and the girl’s hands are too old to shake him. She does her best to make him see sense anyway.
Steve had people who loved him before the war, and it turns out a few of them are still around when he finally comes home.

( Bucky clenches his fingers tighter, and pulls him until he follows, stumbling against a tree farther away from the hustle. He lets go to practically hug the bark of the tree, looks up at the canopy and around him again. Steve, thinking him delirious, reaches out to check his temperature. Bucky’s eyes shoot to him as he does, bright and possessed.
“Is this real, Steve?” He asks, sounding like he’s almost begging. “Is this real? It feels real, like, like the tree and ---and you,” he clenches a hand around the zip of Steve’s jacket, digging the metal into his palm. “But not you at the same time. But you feel…Is this...? Tell me it’s real.” )

Summary
In 2015, Steve and the Avengers search for Bucky Barnes, thanks to a little extra intel from the future. GEN-based hurt/comfort/angst story, heavy on friendship, recovery, and examination of one very traumatized guy from the 1940s. COMPLETE, Standalone.
This canon-based multi-verse story takes place immediately after Age of Ultron. What does that mean? Because this is part of my Winter Soldier Time Travel series, it takes place in a canon-compliant timeline offshoot from the original canon-based story. I recommend you read Part 1 of the series (Winter Soldier: Resurrection), but you can easily understand this story without doing so. However, Part 1 is an easy read, less than 40K words, and it'll give you the background for this story. Part 2 of the series isn't relevant to Part 3, so you don't have to read that long story to understand this one at all. The end of Part 1 leads directly into Part 3 (Isn't the MCU multiverse fun?). Holy shit, did not expect this to be so good. Bucky & Sam post TFAWS, going back to Wakanda, Bucky's trying to access memories with Shuri's help and gets reverted back into quasi-Soldier state, and it's not easy to recover.
