She had arrived from the countryside outside of Trost, destitute and without an internal migration permit. The underground had swallowed her up.

And just as the emperor seems to be closing in on making up his mind, it happens. Mozart appears in the doorway of the hall, wetter than a drowned rat, in his usual garish colors. The emperor seems more amused than anything else, but the other officials regard him with annoyed disdain as he drips on the parquet unceremoniously.
