Summary
When the Boy-Who-Lived stood in the middle of the clearing, waiting for death with terrified yet resigned eyes, the Dark Lord Voldemort thought that he had finally won. That he could now shape the world the way he was always meant to do, with no Dumbledore, no prophecy, no boy with green eyes stubbornly standing in his way. He raised his wand and confidently cast the Killing Curse and, once again, his life fell apart.
OR
When Harry chooses to come back to life, he takes with him the entirety of Voldemort's soul. In doing so, Voldemort's mind and body reset to the time right before he made his first horcrux; he is seventeen again, and does not seem to remember the horrors he has committed. The Light wins the war, and is left with an impossible decision. What should be done with Tom Marvolo Riddle?

Summary
In 1993, Gilderoy Lockhart points a stolen wand at Harry Potter and Ron Weasley with the intent to Obliviate them. The wand doesn't backfire. Gilderoy's "discovery" of the Chamber of Secrets is a short-term success.
Other consequences are not short-term at all.
Archived Author's Notes:
I was watching the Chamber of Secrets movie several years back when the scene in question began to play...and immediately I wanted to know what would happen if the wand had done what it was supposed to do. The answer got very complicated, very, *very* quickly.Blame Edgar Allan Poe for the title.
Beta work by Norcumi and Mrs_Stanley. Brit Spellcheck will be performed...soon.
*I use the first 7 books and the Tales of Beedle the Bard as canon, but there are moments from the films used because they left me with fun things to play with.

Bookmarker's Notes
Words from a fellow commenter
Firstly, this whole fic is amazing. My friend recommended it to me about halfway through, and I promptly did not sleep until I'd caught up. In case you were wondering, that was three days. I have loved every chapter, without exception. I have been delighted, confused, aghast, schmoopy, amused, bemused, irate, and all sorts of other emotions that I don't have the patience to list. In short, I have loved it. I suspect I will continue to love it. Now that it's officially finished, the first thing I want to do is go back and re-read it in its entirety (unfortunately I can't, because final weeks of university semester, so curse the timing).
Secondly, you have masterfully manoeuvred these characters from antagonism to love (in whatever form it ends up being, you giant tease), and this...not redemption, because he neither wanted nor needed to be redeemed, perhaps excavation? Rebuilding? I don't know what to call it. This thing you have done with Snape, and through him everyone else, is just...amazing. You have mined to his core, and brought the best out of him. It isn't perfect, but it's close enough to a happily ever after, and the imperfection of it actually makes it better.
Lastly, thank you. This must have been an immense amount of work for something you're not being paid for. So thank you for thinking of it, thank you for doing it, and thank you for sharing it with me - with us all. Just thank you.
