    Summary

It was as if, until now, SecUnit had just been a background figure in the stage-setting of Amena’s life, playing the shadowy role of some uncanny corporate surveillance machine-person. But now the light had fallen upon it, shown it in full color, full dimensionality, and that made SecUnit real to Amena in a way that it hadn’t been before.

    Summary

The middle of All Systems Red, but with a few changes to how those pesky combat override modules work, among other things :)

    Now with bonus chapters!

    -

The humans were going to want to know what a combat override module was, what it did, how it worked, and most importantly, why it hadn't worked on me. I could answer the first three things just fine, but short of telling my already-jittery clients I was hacked ("so I'm actually one of those scary rogue units you've heard so much about, but the good news is that a combat override module can't hijack a governor module that doesn't work!"), that last thing was going to be a big problem.

Honestly, even if I did tell them exactly that, which I really didn't want to do, it was going to be a really big fucking problem.

    Summary

Humans and augmented humans tend to assume that constructs have daemons because we straddle the line between true sentience and a bunch of pre-programmed subroutines mindlessly following orders (not that humans are as clearly on one side of that line as they like to think), but it has nothing to do with intelligence levels. It's just that we have a lot of organic parts mostly made from human genetic material, and where you have life composed of human DNA, you eventually get a daemon.
